lol Another Republican War on Drugs is in the offing.

There has never been a successful program that stopped drug smuggling. It's been 45 years of Republican outcries for more police actions against drugs and blaming Democrats for them. It's especially laughable when I see it posted on this site, where many posters have served time for growing pot. If there is one place on the internet where people know the war on drugs was not really about drugs its here.

You guys don't care. Crocodiile tears.

Do you really want to stop drug smuggling? Start treating the issue for the health issue that is really is. Decriminalize the use of all drugs and put the money that would be wasted on law enforcement and into drug treatment. But this isn't really about drug abuse/overdoses or smuggling, is it?
The obvious answer is to repeal or drastically amend the Controlled Substances Act of 1970, one of Nixon’s first big policy actions.

Criminalizing the possession, use and purchase of compounds in the same drug family (opioids) as the gold standard (heroin) leads to things like the current fentanyl problem and to the earlier MPTP disaster. Criminalizing the psychedelics has no medical
basis; it’s just that those who use those drugs tend to reject indoctrination.

The two hurdles are a puritanical and controlling attitude toward drug (excepting alcohol, nicotine and caffeine) use, and
the massive industry that has evolved around the law enforcement and penal systems geared toward profiting off the drug war, with the brunt of the cruelty landing on the poor andor nonwhite people.

But as you’ve said before, cruelty is the point.

As I said earlier I would love to hear your suggestions on how to stem the flow? I agree that it’s a horrible situation re fentanyl.
Well that's above my pay grade, Buddy. One cant have an opinion if they don't have a solution? How does Canada do it? You all seem to have very tough border laws, last I heard US citizens weren't allowed in your Country with a dui on their record. Seems kinda harsh, eh?
I dont think a wall will work but more personnel in problem areas, where's there's known crossing, more dogs, more tech on border town crossings can't hurt. I really dont know but throwing our hands up in the air and acting like it's just going to happen no matter what we do isnt going to help.

The Fentanyl problem is unlike any other drug crisis the US has seen. It's killed more people than the 80s crack epidemic and is 50 times stronger than heroin. It's flooded all of America and most opiate iv addicts cant find heroin anymore and are forced to start using fent. And it's everywhere. Winter of 2022 Maine DEA made two separate drug seizures in Lewiston. The first was a measly 1 pound,a month later the second bust , SIX pounds of uncut fet. Probably enough to kill the whole state. Fall of 2023 Polk county Florida intercepted Ten pounds of fent via Cali way.
Yall can tidy me up into your Republican box, but it doesn't take away from the fact that raw ingredients are shipped from China to Mexico then cooked up into fent in jungles then smuggled into the US by the Cartels.
Where there is demand someone will do their best to fill it if it's profitable.

Considering a huge percentage of addicts creating the demand first got hooked on legal opiods prescribed by doctors who fell for lies by the people who made them. Pill mills handing out ridiculous amounts of 'legal' pills for huge 'scrips wrote by unscrupulous doctors getting rich on peoples misery.

Lets put the blame where it belongs why don't we.

When the cartels can't make enough on pot they just switch to the next illegal and very lucrative thing.

See above.

Biden has nothing to do with this and there isn't enough money in the US to stop half of it unless you start making the greedy rich pay their fair share and the Repubs will never go there but Biden will and he won't waste it building no useless wall.

What a crock. I have plenty of relatives in the states that come up here often with DUIs and worse. And we got plenty of fent etc up here too with a huge homeless and addiction death problem as bad as the states.

In BC, California north, it's really bad with ODs falling like the leaves in autumn. I think my province, Alberta now has the worst record per capita in all Canada thanks to our Conservative gov't's handling of the crisis. We call the lady in charge, (and I use the term cynically), tRump north. Lots of refugees coming across our southern border too with many dying from hypothermia after being dropped off by greedy people smugglers in remote areas wearing summer clothes when it's well below 0C at times or even in blizzards after being told it will hide them from the cameras. What does some poor schmuck from south America know about winter. Any that are caught or ask for asylum are brought in and processed then if safe allowed to roam free until summoned for their hearing. We are now allowed record numbers of immigrants into the country as, like the US, needs more workers to replace retiring boomers like me. I believe they plan to allow applicants to work while they wait for their hearings which makes sense to me and will greatly reduce taxpayer burden supporting them while they wait a year or longer for a hearing. Common sense stuff like a christian nation that practises what it preaches should do.

Rant over. Carry on.

exactly Put more resources where they would make the most difference.

The wall was just a marketing tool for weak minded authoritarians who responded to the symbolism. At best a waste of money and at worst a fiscal drain to staff and maintain it. Regardless of the magnitude at which if failed it was also shaping up to be an environmental catastrophe.

So, OK, I can agree with some of what you said: put money into, tech, dogs(?), agents. And then what? You still have a problem with a backlog in the courts. So, how about putting more resources into that? That is what Congress is supposed to be working on. I've googled and searched. I can't find a comprehensive summary of what conservative lawmakers propose be done. What is discussed here:

I've summarized below:

Resume building the wall
Increase staffing of Border Control Agents (BCA) from 19,000 to 22,000
Require that BCA should not work to process immigrants
Grant retention bonuses for BCA
End the ability for migrants to schedule appointments to apply for asylum legally at the border

Taken together, the policies listed above are unreasonable and unworkable. Some are OK. But, resuming construction on the wall, taking away resources to process immigrants without a plan to backfill the agents with other staffing is not. That's just plain shit stupid. Also, the app that conservatives want to take down that is used to schedule appointments. What in hell, man? That's simply throwing a wrench in the works. I don't see a workable solution in all of that. Do you? If so, please explain.

Congress allowed Title 42 to lapse without a contingency plan in place. Tens of thousands of migrants were penned up at the border and this is ultimately the reason why we are now having a large number of people being arrested at the border. Biden's hands are tied. The courts struck down Title 42 because, guess what? The coronavirus that justified that presidential decree is no longer causing a worldwide pandemic. So, it had to go and there was nothing in place to help the border control process deal with the rush toward our border. This seems a deliberate act of sabotage by MAGA GOP congressmen to me

Hey, MAGA GOP backers, is this Biden's problem to fix?

Migrants given court notices will get an opportunity to seek asylum in front of an immigration judge. But because the immigration court system is dealing with a backlog of hundreds of thousands of unresolved cases, their claims are not likely to be adjudicated for years.

thats actually not a crock part its legit you need to.permit to reenter, if it happened within 5 years,

USA and Canada neither acknowledge pardons, etc so you've been convicted of something youre likely to run into trouble,

I went through an entire hassle over my mom, but i thought it was genuinely known that Canada doesnt allow people with DUIS cross the driving boarder because its considered a felony in canada

my mom was caught shoplifting when she was 15 , it was pardoned by canada and expunged from her record, USA refuses her entry at 70 some years old because of 1 shoplifting incident at 15... because shes " a risk"
it will cost 3k to try to attempt to get a waiver for her to enter the usa.

Two of my posts have been removed from this thread. Hard to understand, so I’ll pull out after this:

Trying to blame immigration on Biden or any individual is intensely simplistic. US history of supporting oppressive governments over democratically elected ones in central and South America has helped create a problem we are now dealing with, among many other causes. I blame conservatives for this truth. If you want to blame the current leader, please open your eyes and study some history.

Border Patrol Authorities, Militia In Tense Standoff Over Claim To Detain Migrant Family They Caught At Same Time

COLUMBUS, NM—Digging in their heels and refusing to stand down, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol authorities were caught in a tense standoff Monday with an independently armed militia over their mutual claim to have detained a migrant family that both groups caught at the same time. “The fact of the matter is that we arrived at the scene first and this family should be taken into custody, neglected, and mistreated by trained law enforcement officials, not a bunch of amateurs who need to back off,” said CBP deputy commissioner Robert Perez
