When to turn off drip ring?

I just got the vivosun 4 bucket kit. This system has a drip ring that gets buried in the hydroton.

What is the point of this? I assume I use it until the roots find the water. Do I turn it off then?

Thanks

I second that thought. When using older Dutch pots I removed the drip ring altogether and hand-fed until the roots hit the reservoir. The roots only take a few days or a week to hit the water.

I was reading up on all the different forms of hydro and there is one that uses a constant drip ring throughout the entire grow. Supposedly the fastest growth too. Who knows ‍♂. I removed the drip ring all together once the roots hit the water. It seemed like a lot of nooks and crannies for bacteria and nasties to hang out in.

The plant I initially made this thread about is still going. Probably around 2 to 3 weeks left. This has to be one of my easiest grows ever. No problems except for one week when I thought I could get away with just topping off the reservoir. Leaves got nasty. Buds are rock hard. Could be genetics too. 20/20 vidamints.
