How you storage your water?

Guys chill out!
The post was supposed to be about water storage not about chlorine.

Hope everyone have a nice day!

Cheers
NO offense intended, but you did mention chlorine in the second sentence of your original post. As a long time gardener I have killed and watched other people kill plants using tap water we thought was safe. Letting it off gas, as you do was a game changer! Lets not even talk about how many plants I have overwatered to death!;)

Outdoor grower here. I’ve got a 20-gallon bucket where I store my tap water to let the chlorine evaporate before using it for my plants. I don’t mix any nutrients in it. just plain water sitting there. When needed, I fill another reservoir with water and add the necessary nutrients for the day.

My question is: is it okay to keep storing water like this (several weeks) and just keep topping off the bucket with more tap water as needed? Are there any issues I should be aware of with doing it this way?
Is the container open whole top or just a little hole? If the large surface area is exposed to the sun chlorine off gasses faster. So as far as that goes the more surface area hit by sun the better. But mosquitos would lay eggs there so if it were me I wouldn't fill it with more than you need in say a week and empty it all the way. Just my opinion. Fluorine wont off gas, however. I agree though, my vegetables do so much better with rain than hose water.

Im using a thrash can + mosquitos net. Let it sit around a day and them put the lid on.

Add some mosquito dunks to your water storage can if you’re worried about mosquitos, that’s basically what they’re made for - protecting standing water.

I keep a 35 gal trash can with a lid on it in the basement to store my RO filtered water. I keep an air stone in it attached to a pump to bubble it and keep it from going stagnant. I think it also helps with evaporation of chlorine. I use about 6-7 gals of water a day when both tents are full, using soil.

To the OP.

If you are storing water to off gas chlorine, ask the folks who supply your water if they use chlorine or chloramine to sterilize your water. Chlorine off gasses chloramine does not. If it smells like a public pool that's chlorine, the smell is the chlorine off gassing, if it doesn't smell than it's likely chloramine. If you have chloramine in your water you will need filter it out.

My water has chloramine added so I use a hose filter to remove it. I have read many studies that say that chlorine/chloramine, when used at levels that are approved for drinking water, posses no harm to plants and no long term harm to microbes. But I'm weird I guess, I feel like the less disinfectants, or chemicals in general in the water the better.

I also don't trust that my local municipal water supplier is maintaining chloramine within safe levels personally.

I also don't trust my local municipal being that i think they add these chemicals while water is being discharged instead of letting it mix, its why i believe i see hot shots of it, excess chloramine i filter with biochar and cheese cloth, sad thing is more often i test my city water the more i want to filter it lol

I lived off grid for for a few years and my drinking water came from a small stream and flowed to a small water tank, and then gravity fed to my house. That was great water! The only filter, if you want to call it that, was a section of steal screen from a screen door to keep leaves and stuff out.

Thanks for your reply.
Yeah, I got a report from the water company, they give you reports on their website every 3 months. They use chlorine in it so yeah Im storing and off gassing the chlorine. I could fill my reservoir always a day before and let it sit 24hrs before watering, But Im just want to have water at my disposal anytime a need. Thats why the question about storage. My water here is very safe to drink from the tap, It comes out of the tap 240ppm with Ph 7.2. I live in Portugal and they are very pround of their tap water. Ive never seen anyone drink bottled water in their home.

Here is the report (on Portuguese)
Cloritos means Chlorine on the chart.

In general: water that moves is usually preferable to water thats been sitting still, it may create zones of low oxygen where you get bacteria you dont like. But if continually refilled theres some movement.
And high mineral water: if you keep refilling your mineral values tend to go up.
- Well water usually have high minerals
- City/local tap water has what ever it has; minerals and additives but usually cleaned by some sort of state services.
-Rain water: almost like RO as long as you dont live in a smoggy industrial area ; for out in the country growing its an amazing choice.
- RO water: expensive to get but best for hydro; clean.

Anybody have info on how much of minerals you can filter out with coal or similar filters; as in non RO filtering?

Most techniques, around 150ppm can be done. With nanofiltration membrane + UV disinfection can be done up to 1500ppm. BUT. it doesn't remove most beneficial minerals such as calcium, potassium and magnesium...

Hey buddy :) Can you bring down EC aswell?
Im trying to figure out if theres any way to get water down to "good enough" as id have a hard time doing RO at home.
