I hate to ask dumb questions. Did you plug them both into the same receptacle? If not you may need to check the breaker. You said it fired up for a couple of days and then quit?? Its possible the wiring you have has been weakend and won't carry the necessary load anymore. You do need to get the answer to this as soon as possible. We will help you. VV
 
Mamabear I hope you find your light along the way. Here are a few things to check out.

1. If the same ballast runs both bulbs, it should contain a switch to cross from metal haldie to high pressure sodium. Find this switch and make sure it is properlly seated.

2. If your lampholder is cord connected to the ballast, are you using the same cord to connect both? If yes, you know the cord is good if it is firing your MH.

3. Check your literature and make sure the bulbs match that specific ballast. I have seen 400 watt bulbs confused with 430 watt bulbs and they can create problems at times.

If this won't help, post back with what you have found.
 
i skimmed, it sounds like you have a blown or disconnected ignitor; relatively easy to fix, but i'd need you to open the ballast case and take me a picture. if the ignitor is not switched on (if a switchable ballast) or if it's disconnected or burnt out, the hps will not fire, no matter how hard you try. the ignitor is the ONLY difference between a mh and hps (besides the bulb of course)

That was my first thought KP, but from what mamaB said, it sounds like has two different ballasts and neither of them worked. I have seen coindences amaze me before, but having two blown ignitors on two seperate(new) ballasts is a long shot.
 
Thankyou WN The first ballast came in a pre-put-together unit from sunlight sheds. The metalhalide bulb worked fine in this ballast, and I did have the hps bulb in for a while ,then the bulb wouldn't work, so I took the bulb to hydrolite and he tested my bulb in his store and it worked fine. I then thought it must be the ballast and bought a ballast from the guy from hydo-lite and when I brought the ballast home took the old ballast off the light and hooked up the new ballast only to find out the new ballast would not fire up the hps bulb, however it ran the metal halide bulb no problem. So there you have it, does anybody know if metal halides use less power thanhps lights, if so maybe my normal everyday plugs won't power it. I read somebodies post about the thingermajigger may need to be pulled out inside the light socket and i did try that. (it didn't work) mammabear
 
It has to be that the ballast is not switching to HPS, I have been thinking about this one, and it can only be that the ballast is not firing the HPS bullb. With out repeating what has been said by two very reputable people on this thread, check out what has been suggested to you and post back with some answers...
 
OK my secrets out my old man did the wiring Mammabear takes care of the chemicals and day to day moitoring I'll make him check if there is a magical switch somewhere thanks for all the help you rock
 
i'm hooked. it has got to be a power issue in the home.

the ballast DID fire the HPS which is proven to be a good bulb

i assume; the HPS and ballast were tested at the store?

now i confused myself. dang it.

I agree, the crazy thing is two ballast doing the same thing? Strange. My dumb ass panicked when mine wouldn't fire up, after troubleshooting every extreme thought imaginable I stopped smoked one and it came to me... The fuckin switch man the switch.. hahahaha.. I'm sure this one has no switch and has its own way of switching itself. It seems to be a problem when this happens Id look into how this is suppose to work. Good luck!!:peace:

Hmmm ... yes I'll have to investigate further....lumberjack but not in the way i'm thinking riddles everone talks in riddles i need to go have a puff to contemplate that....
