And to pinner, Dont be too offended when people go off on you for stuff like that, You just gotta realize, anyone who is taking the time to document their grows and experiences puts a lot of time Just into taking pictures and answering questions for the benefit of everyone.

People can be very defensive of their grows and if your going to make comments like that then you can expect some backlash.

And Flo, I'll be looking forward to seeing your next grow. You mentioned going flat. You gonna go all out flat or you planning on incorporating some vertical growing?

Something I have been Extremely interested lately in is a Vertically veg room for a proper perpetual grow. I dont do a long veg time, usually just long enough to establish a good root mass then switch'em to flower. Im thinking I could get the Huge benefit of added space by doing veg in vert style set up just for veg, and I dont have to deal with the massive buds to tie up in the vert set up cause I would flower them flat.

Any thoughts?

yes i will be going completely flat.. 3x6 ebb n flo tables, 1200 watts and 72 plants per table.. i will however build a small scale vert to test some ideas, and use a 400 or 600.

and i think a vertical veg would be a great idea.. i had actually had thoughts about using a belt and pulley system to rotate plants around hanging floro tubes.. it would greatly reduce space concerns, and especially in your case, since you lolipop, all you are really looking for is root mass development, and not even canopy development

i think it would be easy too.. i was thinking an 8ft metal shaft with grommets for the belts at each level, have a slow rotating motor at the bottom, and then each level could have a lazy susan (u know the spinning things they put on large tables to pass food around) and just cut grooves in each one, have a belt wrapping around all of em, and back to the drive shaft.. one motor to rotate countless numbers of plants

my only thought with the independant spinning action is that lower branches might get caught on eachother and snap.... unless, you had each plant alternate the dirction of spin, then they would act like gears.

and jig, thats a very good observation, and you would definitely want to prune them or tie em up.. but for BC's needs it would be great, because he could prune them down, get them ready for flower, and continue to prune once he started flowering

Yeah the prices are insane, but its just because its custom woodwork.

You could probably order the motors for dirt cheap though.

I am a little interested in your idea though. You could just have a whole wall spinning with 1 motor with some fluoro tubes on movable wood frames.

It would definitely be a cool idea, just dont know if it would be worth all the hassle..lol.

You were off to such a great start... I agree that the res temp played a role in the problem, but it also looks like you had an over-watering issue. Your leaves were hanging heavy & green, and it's a major cause of root rot.

I'm relatively new to this, so I could be wrong, but I think Mr. Duke hit the nail on the head when he mentioned the rockwool contributing to the root rot. What watering schedule were you on?

naw bro, i have grown in rockwool since the beginning.. i know how much water it holds and how to maintain it.. if it was overwatering it would have shown its head when i was watering them as clones.. i have had the same schedule since the beginning, 2 waterings while lights were on, and when i was at 18 hrs a day i was doing 3 waterings a day.

the root rot was soley contributed to the high temps while waiting for my a/c.. once i got em under control, it had already had a chance to take hold, and i didnt feel like dicking around with it for 2 months to pull off a half hearted harvest.

my leaves were heavy green because they are well fed and cared for LOL.. loaded up on N to make the long journey to harvest. all new shoots were pointing straight up, and light green as you can see in the pics.

leaves suck up the suns (or hids) energy for use in photosynthesis.. leaves will always naturally turn towards the sun. if you look at a plant that gets full sun outdoors, you will see that as the day goes on, the leaves will continue to rotate with the sun before drooping for the night.

in a vertical system, the lights are on the sides, not on the top, so naturally the leaves will angle down towards the lights to absorb the most energy.. i know it seems wierd but its true! if you look at any of my past grows they do the same thing.. i was worried when i first saw it myself, but realized that they were just following the lights.

and just for future refrence, root rot is not caused by heavy green leaves.. very dark green leaves is a sign of high amounts of nitrogen in the plant. you will know when the plant reaches its nitrogen limitations because not only will they be deep green, but the tips will just barely start to curl.

root rot is caused by one of two things.. high temps and overwatering.. however, in reality, these two things are only caused by one single thing, and that is lack of oxygen at the root zone.. too much water, and the plants use it up, suffocating and killing the roots... and with high res temps, the same is true... high temps means less dissolved oxygen in the medium, strangling the roots.. root rot thrives in these temps, and creates a slimy coating over the roots, suffocating them further, and causing them to rot.

one of the tell tale signs of root rot (without looking at the roots of course) is to look at the bottom leaves.. if they start to turn yellow from the stems outward, this is almost always rot (nitrogen def starts from the tips, to the stems)

it was a rookie mistake on my part, and i shoulda just bit the bullet and got a couple of res coolers, but i was just trying to hold off till my ac got there, and the frozen water bottles, combined with the heat wave here, just didnt help my cause..

we just wanted to get this show on the road as his lease was up and had to move he wanted to get a crop out before hand and didnt wanna spend money on res chillers.


me and flo have extensive talks about Watercooling grow equipment, let alone whole room. It versus a/c cooling cost and efficiency

ya i have checked out his thread, its pretty cool.. however if i remember correctly he is using the water through the coils as an air heat exchange, not running his res nutes through it..

see the problem is that copper will degrade in an acidic solution like used for hydroponic applications.. the copper will get into the res over time and WILL build up and kill all of your plants from poisoning.

even when used in more alkaline solutions like aquariums it can degrade and get into the tank and kill the fish..

a stainless steel, or platinum tube would work, but would cost much more, is harder to bend to shape, and not as readily available.


and mrduke, if you do not have fresh air coming into your room, then you are limiting your plants growth and doing them a disservice.. if you can afford it, i would go for it.. extra co2 is never a bad thing..

if you are going to do co2, do it right, get a tank, regulator, timer, and most importantly a controller! if you dont, you will not be able to control the amount effectively, and will waste the co2, and could end up injecting too much and cause some problems.

the sentinel one is like 450 bux, and worth every penny.. if you do not get a controller, then save up the money to do it right, and in the mean time add an active intake

Yeah, that root rot is a real bitch. I got it in my last grow. Luckily it was isolated to one plant in its own res.
I used H2o2 then Hygrozyme and it just came back worse than ever.
Its so much easier to prevent than repair in my little experience.
My biggest mistake was to direct a fan right on the res thinking it would cool......Heck, it raised the temp another 4*F.

You will redeem youself with the next grow.
