Can anyone tell me what size pot container is big enough to grow a plant in it to grow 3 1/2 ft tall, in a growbox. 6 inch pot? 3 gallon pot? 5 gallon pot? is it better to use plastic pots or teracotta glazed or unglazed? C.W.

good rule of thumb is for each FOOT of growth you'll want a gallon... you should be fine with a 3-4 gallon.

Tommy has the right formula, 1 gallon equals a foot of growth more or less. The type of container to be used......yeah terra cotta unglazed it the top of the line for container grows. The glazing on terra cotta means that the pot won't sweat out excess water or breathe the same as plastic containers. I haven't used terra cotta in many years due to the expense and the consant breakage I incurred, but they sure to do get expensive if you grow many plants and are ungodly heavy if you have to move them around. If you can though the results in MHO are well worth the cost and if you are young and strong enough to move them around when needed. Happy Growing

to be honest pot size has nothing to do with plant size. veg time and light size does. ive done 4 footers in cupos. and yes i got good bud. wasnt easy but its doable. i use nothing bigger than a 2 gal pot. if you dont have big multi lights then a long veg is a waste of time. im under 1430 watts and never needed anything more than 2 gal
and the old formula is 1 gal for each month veg, not 1 foot hight.
you only in a 3.5 foot tall box..i doubt you even need any more than a 1 gal pot. leave in cups right till flowering time then transplant to 1 gal and your fine.

I've heard a rule of thumb is a gallon for every month of life. Doesn't really matter i guess as they both come to about the same result anyway.

11 litres (3 gallons) seems to be the average and recommended size.

not for a small light. waste of food n time n soil. im only in 2 gal pots and use 10 times his light. i get 2 footers and 4 oz dry....no stem at all. pot size dosnt determin plant size or bud yield...all veg time and light pwer

I agree that you can grow bigger in smaller pots, but as was mentioned it is not easy. At a foot per gallon you still tend to be root bound when the plant is finished and in MHO it is much better to obtain your nutes and minerals from as much soil as possible as to all that crap you have to feed your girls to obtain the same results. There are many ways to get the same end product, some better and easier than others. Personally I grow organically, make my own soil and don't use additives other than super thrive at certain times, mostly for shock or cloning, and of course molasses. So to each their own but the only way to know what works best for you is to try different methods. Happy Growing

Well It is very apparent that the majority of indoor growers use 3 g pots. So given the formula for 1g per month of veg . Lets see most people around here buy clones veg them for 2-4 weeks .so at 2 weeks u would need a 1/2 g pot and at 4 weeks a 1 gallon pot . That doesnt sound right.

And given the other 1g per ft of height. So 3 gallon pots most popular . 3ft of heigth is the desired height of indoor indica strains. Makes sense .

dont grow by strain...its light source. with little light no sence in growing big,.most indoor guys use hid light to., not cfl.

Thats a different philosophy Yeah if u want to restrict your plants of light then yeah use a smaller pot makes sense if thats what u want to do or thats what your limited to.

Most people want to go for optimal results so this formula is based on optimal results not what pot size to use if you restricting your plants of light.

he isnt wanting to restrict...he has to...not enough light nor room in there. cab is only 3 foot tall
and calculating plant size by how big the light is isnt a diff way. its the wat its supposed to be done...why use 20 gal pot under a 23 watt cfl...room siuze and liught size is the way to do it

Where did you get he was working with a 3.5 foot tall box?? he just said he wants to keep his plants that tall.
And sorry if you grew your plants in small containers like that.... I imagine what yield you would have gotten if your pots were a bit bigger... your loss.

Again, where the F are you getting all this info about what he has and the lights he is planning to use ??? and what size grow box he's got ????
