TLDR; To be clear, I realize that I chopped a bit early. I made this decision rationally, however, so the result is just about as good as I could have expected. The quality of the high is exactly what I was hoping for, and now I have a bunch of cannabis and a bunch of new knowledge to help me on my next grow.

and that is what it is all about.

my last grow i grew out 3 bagseeds. only wanted 1-2 fem's but did 3 just in case. well they were all fems. 2 of them i killed about 5-6 weeks into flower with my very low pH well water, around 4, and they other lived on strong. well after 12 weeks in flower and still spitting out white hairs, i was dumbfounded. everyone said light leak light leak light leak. one grower said Sativa dom. they said let it go cause it was probably around 70-80% Sativa and it may have gone several more weeks. well i harvested the plant and ran several tests with a video camera in the cab to check for light leaks. couldnt find a single one. so i wish I would have let it finish because it would have def plumped and ripened for a better high and better yield. but it gave me the end result I wanted, a fresh supply of my own herb. luckily i pulled about 3 seeds off of her and I intend on growing her all the way out when i plant them.

WOW! Just wow. aggreenvln, you have certainly showed and properly documented how to do a DWC PC grow. You have inspired a lot of people to go in the direction you have.
You have also been very generous in answering questions with quality responses(few do that). CONGRATULATIONS!!!

How was the smell in your room when you came back from your trip? How long will this last you? On your next grow, will you do this strain since you really enjoy it or a new one?
You also mentioned you could have yielded more, what would you have done different to yield more?

You are awesome! Will you please document your next grow.

Agg,

You have put together an incredible journal here. I have been lurkin' on these forums for a bit and your journal has answered nearly every question I've ever had without even having to ask. Well done, thanks for the hard work! I really like how you made your case.

I do have a few questions...how strong was the scent while growing? Were there certain weeks or time period of any kind that it noticeably stronger than others?

I suppose everyone probably has a grow or two in their back pocket like this :). It's good to hear the stories though. I definitely plan on completely maximizing my next ER seed. I have 4 more!

Hey, thanks so much greenKandy! I'm pretty happy with how everything turned out, and I'm very glad to help however I can. My philosophy is that the only way to ensure the quality of a community improves over time is to do something about it yourself, so I'm pleased to hear so many people are finding this thread helpful.

Now after all that preaching, let me try to answer some of your questions ;). I'll get more into the smell later, but suffice it for now to say that the smell when I got back (and as I understand it pretty much the whole time I was gone) was VERY strong. I walked into my room to a sort of sickly sweet trashy skunky smell. After the fact, my room is now pretty much dominated by the smell of evaporating isopropyl alcohol. Yech :P.

I'll be growing at least one more Easy Ryder before I switch strains -- mostly to ensure I'm able to use my first grow as an accurate control for tweaking my next one effectively. I'm thinking Auto Hindu Kush after the next ER.

What I could have done differently... I'll get more into this in a future post, but my main priority is solving the space issue. To that end, I plan on raising my screen a bit (~1inch, so 5 inches above the reservoir instead of 4) and using slightly larger ScrOG holes. I'm sure gumball will give me hell for this, but I also plan on trimming pretty much everything that is not a top bud. Basically, I don't want any growth below the screen. I just want about 10 or 12 really nice plump buds that are allowed to fill out as much as they want. I think I'll end up with a much denser, more complete, healthier product this way and overcrowding won't be an issue. And I'll still be able to take maximum advantage of my space.

Howdy Pottna! It's good to see you out of the shadows. I'm sure if you wanted to know for sure you could go through the thread and find out when the smell was worst based on my comments on specific days, but here's a general idea: There is basically no smell during the first three or four weeks of growth. After she gets a bit into flower, the smell starts creeping up and up. At first it's only noticeable if you rub the leaves and smell your fingers, and then after about a week it becomes apparent if you put your face close to the plant. I would say after five to six weeks the smell is definitely noticeable in the vicinity. There was a period of roughly one to two weeks in the middle of flower where smell wasn't too bad (not sure why), and then it got progressively worse and worse until harvest. According to my housemates, my room smelled like "straight up asshole" for at least one day while I was gone. Hahah :). I'll let you know how the final dried product smells in a few days.

iv growin easyryder it has a powerful smell like fruity
i only had one it stank my house out
Hahaha, thanks SoA. I lawled at how you said that :P.

Hey aggreenvln, why did you cut a hole in your rez and not just pour the water and nutes on the hydroton? Also, when you flush your rez how do you do it exactly? You mentioned earlier that you stick a tube in the rez and suck out to get it started to drain(is this correct?).

I was told by someone that I would have to use two containers; one that has the plant and then fill another container that has all the water and nutes in it. So, I would lift the lid with the plant in it with one hand then pull out the old rez and put in the prepared rez and slide it in with the other hand. There has to be a better way to do this.

How do you flush with dwc? Would you put only water in the rez for the last two weeks before harvest or would I need to get some of other liquid that General Hydroponics has, that will "flush" it out.

If you would, please post some pics too, thanks!!!

Your the best!

Hey greenKandy! I'll answer your questions inline.

I cut a hole in my reservoir for two reasons: first, because I needed an access point for pH and TDS testing without having to lift the lid; second, because this seemed like an easier way to pour nutes into the reservoir given my funnel/hose method. And yes, you essentially have the reservoir drain correct. It is a process called siphoning -- a really neat application of physics that makes good intuitive sense if you think about it! A picture is worth a thousand words, and a video is worth however many frames it has I suppose, so check out this video and see for yourself how it works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiQI1O1hNQ4&feature=related . You can just suck on one end to start it instead of using that fancy auto siphon thing. Just make sure you raise your PC case above whatever you're siphoning into.

I was told by someone that I would have to use two containers; one that has the plant and then fill another container that has all the water and nutes in it. Nope. As long as you do a good rinse every time you change your nutes, the siphoning method eliminates any need to remove your reservoir through the course of the grow. Do take care to maintain cleanliness though -- try not to let any biological compounds enter the reservoir. An algae/slime outbreak would be a pain to take care of.

How do you flush with dwc? Would you put only water in the rez for the last two weeks before harvest or would I need to get some of other liquid that General Hydroponics has, that will "flush" it out.
The final nutrient flush is just that simple. Use only RO water for the last two weeks before harvest. This does take some foresight and planning, so be mindful that you make sure your plant really is about to finish up before you start the flush. That was precisely the mistake I made this time around.

If you would, please post some pics too, thanks!!!

Aww, shucks :D. I'll post some pictures a little later tonight after I finish scraping up my iso hash. It turned out REALLY well, guys. It looks like I'll end up with 6-7g of super pure shiny black oily goodness. I ghetto vaped (a.k.a. tinfoil + straw) a bee-bee sized ball of it about 90 minutes ago and I've been at roughly a [9.3] for the past hour. Wow. This shiet is intense.

I also plan on ScrOGing just as how you did.
Good stuff :). I'll go over my improved ScrOG plan in a little more detail a bit later.

How did you do your ISO hash? I have read various ways but always like to hear of the success stories, like the one you mentioned above, sounds nice :hump:

My iso hash method was quite simple. I waited until the clippings I was using
DSC00279 (Medium).jpg

were about half dry (really I could have used them right off of the plant), and then baggied them up and threw them in the freezer for a few hours. In the mean time, I drove to the store and picked up a couple bottles of 91% isopropyl alcohol for about $3/quart. A while later I took the frozen trimmings and threw them in a blender along with enough iso to cover. I blended at medium speed for ~1 minute, then strained the pulp through coffee filters into a pyrex casserole dish.

After a couple hours, the iso was noticeably evaporating:

By this morning it was fully evaporated. I scraped off what I could with a razor and balled it up.
IMAG0306.jpg

It is roughly the consistency of a very soft pitch; very oily and sticky, an amorphous solid.
IMAG0314.jpg

The scale says 4.61g. There's that, plus the ~.2g I have used already, plus probably ~.5g stuck to the razor and plastic baggie. So all in all about 5.3g. Not a bad haul.

No problem yng! If you have the resources, I'd definitely recommend looking into BHO or cold water extraction -- this iso hash is good, but there are ways to make the final product much more pure without much additional effort. I just didn't have any other way to do it when I had to get it done. I'll be making BHO next time, though.

Thanks again for all the answers! About the siphon, this is what I found battery operated siphon pump for $7.99+5.95 shipping on Amazon. Wonder if that would work?

Nice hash!
Yeah, that could probably work. Be careful though... it appears as though there might be some sort of spinning mechanism just inside the tip. You wouldn't want roots to get tangled in it -- if you decide to try it, I would recommend putting some kind of cover over the tip. Something as simple as a bit of fine wire mesh wrapped around the head and secured with a rubber-band would do.

Have you seen this grow yet? He uses just one nute for the whole grow. Might save you some money in the long run. :)
Hmm, intriguing! I'll look into it. Thanks for the link.

Good stuff, man :). Your grow is looking nice. There is no alcohol taste to the iso hash -- really when it boils off it tastes almost exactly like vaporizing bud.

Hey guys,

Just a quick update to let you know that the final dry weight is 36.0g. It is really good stuff -- the smoke report is similar to what I pulled a couple weeks ago (and described a few days ago), just more potent. I like it a lot :).

Here's a picture of the finished product:

I'm going to get my next grow started in a few days. I'll be starting another journal soon. Stay tuned!
