Yes man, your fucked next time the chopper flies over. They will have Federal Agents at your door within 12hours of picking up the heat signature. You will be imprisoned for 5-10years for growing your marijuana, and for possesing growing equiptment, I can hold all of your stuff, until the heat dies down.

I'd say the lights no, the heat exhaust from the lights, maybe. If you need to vent the heat make sure it's going out of somewhere heat is supposed to be going out of. Really though unless you've got multiple 1000 watters I wouldn't even sweat it. Just take all the necessary precautions and you're golden. =)

You haven't stated USA or UK etc.,
It was I that brought up the helicopter point.
In the UK helicopters owned by the police are all equiped with IR camera's and checking out house roofs for heat signature's is standard... even if not specifically out looking for growers.
You can minimise your signature..... but believe me........... I WOULDN'T do 4x400W HPS in an attic.. NOT IN UK anyway. Certain housing estates and area's are flown over regular for this reason alone and video is recorded and reviewed once back at base.

^^^ Keep in mind it is perfectly legal to have an indoor garden, you'd have to do something careless to draw the fuzz onto you, let alone to the point where they could obtain a warrant. No sell, no smell, no tell, and you're GTG. =)
-On a side note I think it makes sense to grow other things in your garden as well as misdirection. Also do some outdoor gardening when possible, then you have a legit reason to have all that gardening gear heh.

Hate to tell you but 6-250 cfl's will put out much more heat collectively than a 400 watt hid. And if you live in the states I wouldnt worry about FLIR. Cannot be used to obtain a warrant.......

First off Doherty, go online and look at videos of police helicopters showing their infrared camera views when they are in the air, it will give you a good idea of what they are looking for. Second, they cant see in the house or see the hot bulbs or the plants, what they look for is temperature difference, and it is literally a black and white image. Attics are made to leak off excessive heat and moisture in the summer time, so all attics are leaking heat (especially in the winter), but when your attic is hotter than all of your neighbors, any spot that leaks heat, to an IR camera it will appear to be a big bright white light pouring out of that spot, where as your neighbor will be showing the same thing but with less intensity, thats what they look for, a house with brighter ( to an IR camera it looks brighter, to humans its invisible) heat leaks than everyone else, your house will literally be lit up from all the excess heat pouring out (doors, windows, sophets, anything that is a poor insulator). Now if your attic was sealed, and you kept your room temp as the same as everyone elses attic during that particular part of the year, they could not tell a difference( but thats not always the best temp for your grow). Thirdly, they do not need a warrant to fly overhead, the DEA uses confidential informants (remember that, that is their biggest tool) all that a CI has to do is say "hey I think that is a grow house" and they get a chopper in the air asap, if they find your house is "lit" up more than the others, then they go get a warrant and raid your shit! Dont believe me, watch the first season of DEA detroit that was aired on the SPIKE cable channel, this is exactly how they did it, scary thing is they raided someone within a 10 mile radius of me, using a CI. So moral of the story, shut your mouth, dont tell a soul, hide your smells, never leave discarded equipment/materials out in the open, and you wont end up on their radar. CONFIDENTIAL INFORMANTS bust you( those are people that get busted yet never do any jail time, snitches), not helicopters. Oh and FLIR is Forward Looking Infra Red (radar)

That's not true at all. They generate just as much heat per watt as HID lighting, it's just that people generally have much less wattage running when using CFL's. They don't have air cooled reflectors generally, and they don't penetrate for shit. Fuck cfl's, T-5's are great for veg but fairly worthless for flowering unless you're growing popsicle sticks.

FLIR images CANNOT be used in the USA to obtain a search warrant. If they fly your grow and take some images you can they already have you in their sites...just icing on the cake in court...FLIR images or not they are still going to come a knockin.........

I, think this belief is based on propoganda, I know that the forces do have access to IR cameras, but the cameras themselves are incredibly fucking expensive (just like the helicoptors!) and tend to be shared between areas. All the heli's will have light enhancing (or night vision) cams, but these aren't IR and won't help them see your grow.
They tend to call in the heli's to get evidence based on tip offs, circumstantial evidence sometimes isn't enough to guarantee a warrant.
