Staying legal while maintaining multiple mothers?

I've been growing plants in general for years, outside anyways. I'm new to growing medical marijuana though. I've only ever grown 1 plant from bagseed. For my first grow I yielded 16.9grams. It was good smoke too, I have no doubt I will get WAY more this time around. I would just feel terrible if someone was trusting me to provide them with medicine, and I was unable to because of mistakes. I would feel obligated to provide them with medicine before myself, so I will just avoid that situation for now. Not ready for it. In the future though if the right conditions are met, I would be proud to provide medicine to those who are not able to provide for themselves. My fiancee is showing some interest in getting a medical card soon though, so that may up my limit to 12 mature.

I made sure that I was good at what I did before I added any patients.....had about 4 complete grows under my belt by the time I felt I was ready to take on the responsibility of providing for patients. I admire the integrity, man! Not everyone has that quality these days!

I have seen bonsai style mothers kept and they were very cool. I think for a project its a great idea but for being practical I would just take cuts from plants before they are flipped to flower. I took on more patients so I could keep moms and males without being out of ours states compliance. Tissue culture is also a way to preserving genetics,stay in your #s,and still leave slots open for new plants. It takes a tissue culture awhile to grow so you can run some new stuff and by the time the culture has turned into a plant your round should be complete. I know not a lot of folks talk about T.C. but it can be an option and is worth a mention
Is there any way we can start and experiment off of this thread idea? Donkeyshow may I suggest a collaborative effort based on this idea? Ultimately the idea from any farmer is to produce the most product without compromising quality. Can we agree all on that? I think we can. It seems that there are two common ways of maintaining a strain. Taking clone from maintained mothers, or taking clone from "veg" plants. There are both pros and cons to both aspect. When trying to maintain mothers some of the pros are; being able to take clones at anytime (there are discussions about if this is ok because of hormones. should wait in between), being able to guarantee you have a "mother" to take clones from. Some con's can be; loss of a mature number, strain quality can degrade from time if the same mother is used and not rotated through. So when it comes to yield, you want as much as possible per amount of time. If you can dedicate an extra "flowering" plant to your harvest, that might play out as more beneficial to the yield per month or year. Can we get some people to test these two in similar conditions to try this out to prove which is better?

Correct me if I am wrong, but when doing that, don't you loose some potency with each new generation being weaker than it's parent?

you can grow a mother and keep her very close to a cubic foot, but that is tough.
the key is to train them correctly. i wish i had examples to show, but you can do it with some time and effort.
one of the key parts to keeping a mother is keeping the soil fertile. they build up trace minerals that can effect the plant. one thing you can do after they get root bound is to pull the plant out of the pot, cut off or pull off some of the roots and soil, and transplant into a clean pot of the same size with fresh soil at the bottom and on the sides. it will suffer some shock, but it will be a much happier plant once it recovers.
but really, training a bonsai is tough. you need some experience and great conditions to do it.
I have heard about that. From my experiences it shows no faster degrading then having a mother. You should always restart from seed after your mother or veg plants start to show signs of degrading.

If you would have read more, you would have seen we were envisioning different things........and we worked it out as the thread went on.....
Please post some pics of your mothers, or a video tutorial, so that all of us here in the Oregon section can learn from your techniques......if it works, I would try it. Just seems a little hard to get a good amount of good sized clones off something that is under a foot tall and a foot wide. I am always willing to learn if something is proven to work.
My mother is a monster, and I wish I would have known better how to maintain her when I first started keeping a mother......but I did not, and she is a great mom, so, damn it, I have a tree in my house! LOL.

I have decided to at least try this with a clone of the purple urkle, and a clone from which ever smoke I like better of the three SGS I have. I'll post in here every once in a while with some pics of the maintenance, and when I do eventually take some cuttings. Hazo you got me thinking though, about the issue with having to take small clones. I think it would be possible to trim back roots, and then let it grow out a bit before taking the cuttings.

Can't wait to see your results! I was thinking I would try this also, given the fact that I have to have a backup mother just in case I kill my mother by pruning the roots, which it needs before I repot it. This could be pretty handy if it works properly.

100% Agree. I am constanly trimming a ton of clone worthy cuts off just to keep under a foot. They'll take a ton of abuse and keep on growing.
I've been using what I call "clone and kill" to keep a steady supply of clones and never save a mother. Trying to maintain mothers with limited space is no fun and unnecessarily uses up a lot of resources.
I have two permits. I only flower 6 at a time because of space. I also don't need the volume of buds I'd get from 12 flowering plants. I only grow indoors after once working all summer to find they rot before they complete. Indoor I average about 4.5 oz per plant finished and complete 4 cycles before it gets too hot in June. I take the summer off with plenty of medicine to last till the next season.
I keep the max number or less in either clone form (rapid rooters) or 5.5" pots started from clones. I veg them up to less than a foot tall and about 8 or 9 nodes. I then take the top 4 nodes and do my clone routine. The remaining plants with 4 nodes then either get selected for 6 new flowering plants or I kill them. Yes, throw em away or give to others.
I then train and veg those 6 plants in #3 smart pots for 2-3 weeks, transplant to #7 smart pots and flower to taste.
Benefits include vegging MH lights are only on for 2-3 weeks or so and are off for 5 weeks. I use the veg area to hang my drying flowers. Rooted clones build slowly under a couple of t-5 fluorescent lights for less power consumption. I get to flower 6 plants and have no mothers I have to maintain. You save on nutrients, power and time vegging only what you plan to flower. The plants in the 5.5" pots don't require much, but are ready to go when you transplant and put the power to them. It is a real benefit to have 2 permits so I can veg 6 additional plants to over a foot tall while flowering too.
