For just starting out go to the hardware store get a big yard light cover the sensor up with tape. get a heavy duty timer, wire with ground, a plug end with a ground,and 3wire nuts. the fixture will come with a MH /HID.
Is it worth it for me to grow?

Not a bad idea here except look for an HPS at least you can use one light for the entire grow

Im using a switchable ballast and change the bulb out every few weeks makes fatties.

May i ask why? in my 10 yrs of cultivating I have never tried this, but I am a stick to what works best for me type guy But I love to experiment all the time....of course I have never been apart of such a wonderful forum with lots of ideas like this one either.

Mh makes the bud sites close together and HPS makes them stretch so when you flower if you use MH you get tight fat buds switch to HPS to make the fat buds grow long then fatten up the long buds with MH get it? The yield is way better than just one or the other.

start under the MH for the big stretch in flower after that move it over to the HPS or use a switchable ballast. CO2 kicks ass also

I having using co2 for while now that shit does kick ass, I have always used MH just for veg and HPS just for flower, however I have used HPS throughout the entire grow. My next grow I will definitely use both in flower.....thanks for the tidbit.....btw dif the avatar pic....fuckin hilarious

You most certainly MAY ask. I have tried growing both phases under just HPS and under just MH and under both (for my own knowledge). I saw NO discernible differences in either light source insofar as yield. If there was a yield difference in my grows, it would be measured only in grams in a rather large grow. I saw no difference in either bud density or frostiness either. I ran 2 phenos, one with real dense bud and the other had fluffier bud, and they were identical across the board. A lot of people are re-thinking the MH for veg/HPS for flower paradigm and are running both spectrums throughout the entire grow.
I said I'd prefer MH (If I had to choose one or the other) because MH is easier on my eyes.
What you are describing is almost surely genetic. Trying to see the difference in a harvest under either light is like trying to hear the difference in sound quality from Dolby or Dolby digital on a shitty system. There may be a difference, but you'll never hear it. Sure, you can always say that you "pushed the envelope" and squeezed every potential gram out, but hell, for most people, one or the other will work just fine. A lot of people are trying to push that envelope, mostly among the hydro crowd. They'll feed until tips start to brown, then back off, use the exact spectrum for each phase, stress over the littlest detail, and for what? A few grams, maybe an ounce more? I was taking down 7 to 8 lb per harvest, and what differences I MIGHT have seen wouldn't make a decent dub.

Good stuff jack, thanks for the knowledge drop. I am a soil grower my self, I think it tastes better, plus I'm not to big on chemicals.....you are definitely right about metal halide being easier on the eyes....I have a switchable ballast right now so I will try the metal halide next grow....are you currently using metal halide for flower or are you using HPS?

Right now I aint doing anything due to a momentary lapse of judgement. (Case still ongoing) But when I can grow, I use both, only because I have them. I got a great deal on a shitload of ballasts.

I'm not stressing over the issue. Both lights work good. I know its not just a genetic thing because so and so has been working with about 10 different kinds in the past 9 months and all have done the same thing. They get a fat bud with one inch growth jetting out all over. One inch long and 1/2 inch wide under HPS. When homey g funk puts them under the MH the 1 by 1/2 inch pieces fill in increasing the over all diameter of the bud. IMO of course. And yes its only a few grams per bud. So jack how did you get popped anyway? Can you tell us how not to get busted? Anything I say on this forum could be a total lie anyway, their word against mine. No physical evidence.
