Let me start from the beginning at the top of the list . . .

Actually, let's go back even before the beginning, to a scenario that did indeed involve me and havoc. Situation like this:

Started this June with clones from four different strains. 707 Headband and Blue Dream from Oaksterdam via Fruitridge Wellness Center along with Romulan and Skywalker OG from the recently closed California Holistic Care. I chose these strains based on previous experience with what was available in the area when I got my Secret Jardin DR 150 II back in early June. I vegged them for six weeks, topping with Uncle Ben's method for four main colas.

Things were going fine but I was wasting a lot of energy paying too much attention to some stuff and not enough to other things. I'd been alternating between the Fox Farm prescribed nutrients and pure water and taking notes on which plants needed what, because they'd been growing at different rates and some were larger/thirstier than others. At some point, I ended up giving nutes to the larger of the two Romulan plants full-strength food for like four waterings in a row, and started to get some clawing from nitrogen toxicity.

Back to the theme of misappropriated attention, I'd paid about $1500 for a 1200w tent setup but hadn't prepared to have any fans circulating air within the tent. I got a tiny clip-on desk fan after what was really too long, and ended up using that for the entire first grow. I was running the humidity way too high as much as 70%, especially once all of the plants were upcanned to their final home in #3 Smart Pots.

I got around to buying an absolutely shitty dehumidifier for about $50 on Amazon in early August but had already one too far with the stagnant, bad-dank air, and soon noticed some PM that would plague me throughout the grow. I used a variety of sprays ranging from pH 8 water to a 10% skim milk solution and most frequently, a product I got from a teacher at River City Wellness that's basically some oils with a wetting agent. Having to use these sprays through harvest to prevent PM from taking over made the need for improved ventilation abundantly clear.

My battle with PM also taught me the need for care with foliar sprays, as I badly burned both of the 707s and the aforementioned larger Romulan by spraying them and immediately resuming their exposure to 2x600w HPS. Around this same time, I started noticing other issues with the 707s in particular that I never conclusively got to the source. I chalked all this up to burns from the spray, but once checked the runoff and found it to be in the 4-5 range, which is either a salt buildup and/or . . .

Another key revelation is the importance of pH in all these concerns. I've had a much easier time maintaining rich green foliage after getting my Hanna combo meter.

But back to the comedy of errors:

I sent that shitbox 60w dehuey back from whence it came and ponied up for a 70 pint Kenmore that did a decent job. By this point, I'd already let the tent get way too hot, sometimes nearing 90 and took too long to buy an AC then rig it up, which involved using some of the 15A available in the bedroom adjoining the tent's home. This meant with all the lights and fans I was running, I could effectively choose between AC or dehumidification.

Too hot = airy buds, but too humid = PM = death and thousands down the drain.

I choose airy buds and make a plan to budget for a new place where electrical modifications are more readily implemented. The dehuey is in the tent and keeps things under 45%, really under 40% most of the time, but generates way too much heat and we're looking at high 80s high temps all summer long. It's become clear to me now that a good dehumidifier can handle a bedroom easily so the thing can be on the outside of the tent and that'll reduce the temps inside by 5 or more degrees by itself, easily. Add in running the lights at night during the cooler months and we're now locked in to ideal temps, highs 73-78 and nighttime lows around 68. Oh, and did I mention, I hadn't rigged it up to drain into a reservoir, so I was moving plants around on my hands and knees every morning and night to drain the tiny catch box.

So I wasted a lot of time and energy and made what in retrospect are several quite obvious mistakes, perhaps the greatest being that I didn't reach out for help as soon as I saw the first symptoms. I still kinda hate posting when I have a problem, but I realize ego bruises are a small price to pay for an unlimited supply of AAA+ top shelf meds.

And it's not like I didn't get some rewards from the first time around despite all the troubles. In fact, if I'm generous enough to consider my product on par with the top shelf stuff I'm used to buying (it's not. yet.), then I managed a profit even with all the initial expenses. I'll be back soon with a look at my first harvest with a bunch of photos and observations, to be followed soon thereafter by a recap of the current cycle's veg stage to bring us up to date with the first week of flowering.

Looking forward to meeting some new friends and learning from some of the world's best :)

TL;DR
First cycle yeilded nearly a pound from 5 plants but could have done much better under 1200w with 8 girls at the start. Starting to get things dialed in and I'm almost glad I had some trouble at first because I can really see the differences. Coming back soon with pics from the first cycle and harvest, then more posts to get up to date (it's now day 6 of 12/12 as of this writing).

34 views, 0 replies. I suppose that's fair given my promise of -quote- HUNDREDS -unquote- of photos and only a single damn picture of some Romulan buds.

So how are we gonna get some conversation stirred up, up in hurr?

We still gotta get up to date; do you want the good news first, or shall we start with the bad?

I say we take a look at some of my failures to get those out of the way, then examine some of what I got right.

Here's a nice 707 Headband at day 35, just starting to show signs of a problem. I took the photos but was too lazy and prideful to post and ask for help, so by day 40 they quite a bit worse.

IMG_1887_cleaned.JPGIMG_1888_cleaned.JPG

Fast forward to day 58, I still haven't posted to ask for help and what was probably a calmag deficiency in combination with burns from foliar sprays fighting PM has now mutated into this shameful waste. Given the relative sizes of these buds compared to the other plants I successfully harvested, I probably lost in excess of six ounces here with another two or more on a Romulan that I apparently never photographed.:wall:

top_cleaned.jpgcola_cleaned.jpg

So this is why I feel hopeful for round two (wait, what?!).

I managed over 400g from 5 healthy plants in a tent that was about 2/3 full, a total that projects out to over 650g, or about .55g/w. Given all the opportunities for improvement and my successful implementation, it stands to reason that I can achieve a much higher total when all my plants aren't short on calcium and magnesium.

Here's a look at some of those 400gs (410.8, to be precise). Blue Dream was the easiest plant to work with during the first cycle. It stayed greener than all the rest, yielded around 3oz per plant and had near zero PM (whereas the other strains were constantly battling)

IMG_1892_cleaned.JPGIMG_1952_cleaned.JPG

And while it required way too much attention to prevent the buds from being overtaken by mildew, I was pleasantly surprised to find that both Skywalker OGs yielded over 3oz, including the largest plant of the entire crop. I say surprised because in addition to all the issues mentioned above, these plants were quite short, though I suppose this proves they were also quite bushy.

IMG_1964_cleaned.JPGIMG_1960_cleaned.JPG

Now here's a look at the surviving Romulan plant's last and largest cola, chopped day 63. I was really surprised by how much the calyxes swelled during the 10-day window between the first and last cuts, especially since all I'd been giving them for nearly three weeks by that point was just pH 6.5 water with a little molasses.

romulan1 cola4_cleaned.jpg

On day 68 I chopped the first part of a Skywalker OG, and I hung them on hemp inside a Uhaul wardrobe with a small desk fan on the floor blowing both toward and away from the hole I'd punched for its power cord (I found no significant difference in positive vs. negative pressure for the drying box and can't recall which one I ended up choosing for the majority).

IMG_2141_cleaned.jpgIMG_2146_cleaned.JPG

I continued to cut a couple days apart, both to accommodate my schedule and to get an idea of the perfect time for these strains. Like the Romulan, I can tell the last cuts for both Blue Dream and Skywalker OG were best, and I'll benefit from a bit more patience this time around.

Coming up next I'll recap the veg growth for our next/current grow and then we can get caught up on the first week of flower.

Welcome :bigjoint:

Blue Dream was one of the first strains I liked so much that I remembered it by name. So glad to finally have an ample supply.

And the Skywalker OG is interesting. It smelled like blueberry lemonade upon cutting but as it cures, more of the fuel funk is emerging while the fruity notes fade away.

Matter of fact, I should go try some to see how it's aging :blsmoke:
Back soon with a bunch of new pics!

Weird...I been listening to the Yayo and 50 remix of this for a while now. Instrumental's hot.

Oh and good growin.
Oh for sure . . . back when 50 Cent was 'the future'.

And speaking of remixes . . .

Not sure, Number 2.

I've seen everything from SFV OG x ECSD to ECSD x Master Kush or ECSD x Master Kush x OG Kush. Seems like the East Coast is the key contributor, though no one can seem to decide if it was male or female, and with which other strain(s) it was crossed.

Based on his other posts, I trust this guy:

***warning***

If you get "707headband" cuttings from bluesky cafe in Oakland they are not legit headband at all. They yield like shit, are very sensitive, and don't smell like real headband at all.
But based on what I could see in my own plants, even though they were fucked, they still would have yielded at least 2oz per 4-cola plant, probably closer to 3 based on my other plants.

And speaking of 4-cola topping, here's the sticky where Uncle Ben outlines the super-duper easy process:

Uncle Ben's Topping Technique to Get 2 or 4 Main Colas

That it's in Advanced is kind of a joke given this is just basic plant hormones, but that doesn't mean it's not effective, either. UB is a bit of a hardliner when it comes to his views on things, but some of those views have significantly improved my understanding of this plant, and as he'd have you focus, botany in general.

Now that we're done recapping the first crop's ups and downs, let's start this all over again for a new set of strains. I'd purchased some Super Lemon Haze beans in mid summer but had little success with them in Rapid Rooters. I let them germinate in the paper towel so the roots got long, curly and in some cases stuck to the paper. I tried opening the holes of the rooters to accommodate the curled roots but most of them broke. Several lost their shell casing (what's the science-y word for that? lol) when I was placing them, and ultimately only 1 of the 5 survived.

This necessitated some new genetics, so this time I settled on a couple strains influenced by the OG Kush I'd found such an effective medicine in the later summer. Went 2-for-2 with DNA Genetics/Reserva Privada on their Kushberry and OG Kush #18 feminized six-packs and have seen 9 go on to thrive. I drowned one KB in neem oil before I realized how to properly apply that, one OGK18 kinda just never grew past the first set of true leaves and another one got to about five nodes with minimal branching and then just kinda stayed there despite occasional food and the same light exposure as the others.

So this leaves me with 9 new things to try, but now that I'm pruning my plants to allow for better airflow along with staking them for a more even canopy, I believe I can fit 16 plants in the 5x5 DR 150. So that leaves seven more spots for grow number two; how will I fill them?

We've got five KBs, four OGK18s and a SLH, so that's actually 10. And we'd like another crack at each of the first cycle strains to see if we can see clear improvement and that brings us to 15. I also had a Confidential Cheese freebie that was the only one of 12 Attitude had given me along with the SLH purchase, so now there's only one more spot. Hmmm...maybe I can use one of these #3 Smart Pot-sized slots to flower 4 clones in #1 pots for a little 'pond of green'? Sounds like a great way to test against my default method of topping for four main colas and flowering in #3 Smart Pots.

So now we're up to a total of 19 plants.

ROLL CALL:
Kushberry 1
Kushberry 3
Kushberry 4
Kushberry 5
Kushberry 6

OG Kush #18 1
OG Kush #18 3
OG Kush #18 4
OG Kush #18 6

Super Lemon Haze
Confidential Cheese
707 Headband x 3 (*2 flowered ~6")
Blue Dream x 3 (*2 flowered ~6")
Romulan
Skywalker OG

Now let's take a look at each individual plant as it grew during veg.

Ok now we're getting into the current stuff, let's bring each strain up to date with as many photos as are available from each one, each step along the way.

This 707 Headband was a clone from the first round that in turn had served as a mother and given quite a few cuttings before I realized it could fit in the tent for this second cycle. I'm excited to get something good out of this plant because I fouled up the first ones so badly, and I know how big the buds can get if they get exactly what they need.

These first images were taken October 15th, just one day after they'd been put under the MH lights.

707-headband-2011-10-15-1_cleaned.jpg707-headband-2011-10-15-2_cleaned.JPG707-headband-2011-10-15-3_cleaned.JPG

Am I correct that those shiny leaves mean that if I continue to feed that much nitrogen, it would likely result in a toxicity? Keep in mind, these plants have all been sprayed at least 5-7 times with a neem solution.

Here's the same plant exactly two weeks later, as you can see it's grown over that stake and I've tied the some of the leaning branches to keep the plant like a nice bouquet. The stems are evenly distributed, but relatively close together.

707-headband-2_cleaned.jpg707-headband-3_cleaned.jpg

It was just a couple days before the photos above that I also added four ~6" clones into one of the
spots in the 4x4 grid within my tent. Two each of Blue Dream and the 707s. They're all growing pretty rapidly, and have me wondering if a SOG could be in the future.

So I'm dumb. But getting smarter, thanks to help from some experienced growers.

I had the great fortune to speak with dirrtyd over the weekend and he helped me understand how trying to cram in so many colas in such a small area forced my plants to stretch in an attempt to compensate for poor penetration. It's obviously too late to change this now and I've made a bunch of extra trimming work for myself not to mention the potential (likely?) loss of yield, and a lesson in how much experienced growers can help.

This was the main flaw with the journal from the 'start': I tried to do a big catchup, which was boring to both me and readers, and it resulted in me not documenting this when it could have been fixed in early veg. So thanks again, D, and here's a few looks into my tent on flower day 43:

Little crowded in there...probably could have done some pruning a while back...but you already know that now,and you can see it for yourself, live a learn, Next Round Hey

I'm glad you are posting and looking for, advise, alternative ways for different setups, different techniques of growing.

By posting your grow and talking to people here, will help you to better understand what will work best for you...and will help you achieve the your ultimate goal. Master Yield ;)

Live and learn, indeed. I'm excited for next round -- the work should be easier since my hands will be so strong from trimming all these small buds lol

Thanks for the encouraging words, man. I'll be starting to flush my Romulan and Confidential Cheese in a couple days, so I'll probably pull those out for photos, then take more upon harvesting.
