Michigan firearms season

hunting partner killed a nice 5 pt in jackson county this morning. it was a great cull, should have been a bigger rack on it. thats 2 for him. at least i was there this morning to help drag this one, what work i can do anymore anyway.

a dnr agent thats friends with the folks is dropping off a doe he killed to give to us, he helps manage some private properties killing off does and culls. thats a nice gift, i'll butcher that tomorrow.

we talked to the guys at the check station for a bit. they said the numbers of deer killed are down, and it looks like the numbers of hunters is down too, but the tags sold were the same. they said the EHD is very bad, and some farms are reporting finding huge numbers of dead deer in water sources. they're checking all of them for signs of the disease, including degenerative damage to the hooves.

please take in your deer to be looked at, this is a huge deal.

Deer numbers are way down, we drove 2 cornfields and a swamp today and only kicked out 2 doe. There's should've been herds of deer in the corn, some of the last standing for miles.. Hunting tonight and then it's beer thirty utill monday lol.

We have seen alot less deer than what normally run the property I am hunting, so I had to pick up this bad boy and pick em off from a distance.

What does the venison taste like here in MI? Never had MI venison before. Back home (western Canada) the deer was kinda gamey tasting. I know it can be due to what they eat, but the Elk (and even the Moose) was waaaaaaaay better tasting than the deer.

Also, the deer here are tiny ..... is it a different breed than what you'd find in Western Canada, or are they just smaller due to the less harsh environment?

It is very important where the venison is taken in Michigan. I know that much. Down by Jackson they eat lots of corn and shit, northern UP they go through terrible winters eating twigs and berries and shit. lol. Big difference in the taste. It is amazing the difference in meat taste between those that think they know how to butcher a deer good and those they actually do it also. Some people carefully butcher their deer, so are drunker than shit, cruise it around town for a few hours, even when it's 50 degrees outside, etc. lol.

Would this work?

Deer here in Mich usually taste like car bumper as anymore only way your going to get one is 55 at 3 am.

Lets issue another 500k doe permits next year and lower the hunting age to 5 raise buck limit to 4. I am sure the herd can handle it.

Sorry last 2 years went empty handed and sure is nowhere the deer we had almost a decade ago. Last time I seen anything in my county worth shooting, someone hit the damn thing with a car. It had to come crawling in my direction. What luck, watching a road kill thrash around. I wasted a good carbon arrow and a rage chisel 100gr that day to end the noise and suffering. wasted the evening to dragging it away from my stand with the atv. In retrospect I should have left it lay, and used it as coyote bait. Their numbers seem high. Wonder if they taste good in noodles or rice?

I will have to stop at a Asian restaurant and ask.

Anything yet kindone? I still have not gone out yet have not for a couple years. After you move back from AK it is not the same.

Luckily....I got 2 with my crossbow already becasue I havn't seen a damn deer yet this gun season!!!! Chaos all around me but I see nothin.

Not yet Hic, haven't even seen 1 since opening day and I've spent 20+ hours in a blind or stand. It aint over yet.

I guess I'm not alone.. I think EHD took aout a LOT of deer man.
The reported numbers look big and the few hunters I talk to around the state agree that thay are seeing noticably less deer this year. I think that "hunting" the animal is becoming more important, just sitting and waiting for one to walk by "your" favorite spot is something that is becoming less succesfull. I know the deeer are using the 40 acres I am hunting regularly, I am seeing fresh signs daily. Everyone else that hunts the property has shot there deer( 1 9point, 2 spikes and 1 doe) and I am the guest there, but now I can hunt where I want, including my stand I hung and can finally use tomorro morning. Its in a great spot and what a better day to shoot an animal that will feed my family many, many meals, something to be thankful for.

Yeah you're definitely sitting better if you have woods to hunt.. I have a 80 acre field with a few fence rows lol..

I hunted this morning. I had one walk right under the tree I was in about 20 mins before the light was enough to see. It stood there for a few minutes, and walked off. A handful of gunshots around the area, but fairly quiet as expected. I checked out the bait pile. That deer was there all night eating so many apples that it had the squirts. Shitted all over 1/2 the pile of apples and sugar beets. It won't be eating those I don't think....hurk! I'll have to bring out some fresh snacks for them to come to eat. The turkeys were sure making a lot of noise today....so cool.
