roots poking out

is it normal for roots to poke out of the holes on the bottom of the pot? the plants are about 3 feet tall, in 5 gallon pots. i was amazed at the root structure when i transplanted them into the 5 gallon. i have very little experience with plants and never realized what was going on below the dirt

Totally normal. Boring, in fact... zzzzz. ;-) Just kidding, it's no big deal, usually. If you are planning to put them in bigger pots, go ahead, they're ready.

5 gallons is pretty big already. you should be able to grow a whole 8 weeks in 5 gallon. roots poking out the bottom is testament to your growing skills. and your fantastic growing mix.

ha, after transplanting from 1 gal. to the 5 gal...doing it again with plants this big is terrifying.

no , its not urgent to transplant at all. i would say 5 to 7 days unless its a sativa which is stretchy than let it sit in the 5 gallon and when your ready to flower transplant it a week before to give it time to recover from the transplant and not have any stress.

is it urgent that he transplants? i'm wondering if the roots cannot be exposed to light.
No, it's not urgent at all, unless the plants have really outgrown the pots and become root-bound, but as someone already pointed out, they're in 5-gallon pots, which should be able to accommodate an adult plant ... unless you're growing one of those 20-foot-tall tropical monsters. Far as light exposure to the roots, not a problem when you transplant unless you leave the roots exposed to hot sun for days on end. I'm not even sure that light, by itself, damages roots, although it wouldn't surprise me if it slowed down the growth or caused the roots to grow in the opposite direction.

thx for all the info...im going to try and ride out the 5 gallon pots. what started as 'hey lemme throw these seeds into a pot and see what happens', has become regular trips to the grow store and reading these forums all the time. the strength of my plants is all due to this community. and if i do say so myself....they look strong!

light on roots doesn't affect plant growth like I've read here at riu. it's a myth. if anything the exposure to air is a bonus as oxygen is absorbed by roots not leaves. but you're right they will grow more in other directions as they continually look for the elements they need to make their own food.
