Porky's Pig Pen and Hog Heaven

Welcome everyone!

Grab your favorite beverage and spark up some kind budbongsmilie while I take you on a tour of this years grow.

This years garden is actually two separate gardens. The first garden I share with an old friend/roommate and its behind our house. The second garden is on a remote plot of land 45 Min's away. I call the backyard garden The Pig Pen and the mountain garden Hog Heaven.

These are 100% legal grows done for a select group of medical marijuana patients.

Now on with the show....

This year we made a small greenhouse off the back deck to start our plants for summer. We put two 1000w MH on a light rail to supplement the morning and evening hours and to keep the plants from flowering.

This shot was taken in the middle of May.

Some nights were so cold (below freezing) we would leave the 1000's on all night to keep the plants warm. The whole forest behind our house would be lit up like a search light was on it. (Good thing we don't have any neighbors!) The next morning there would be all these crazy fist size moths all over the outside of the plastic.

Like this.

(I do not usually get side tracked so easily. But you have to admit thats a bad ass moth!)

So by June first the plants looked like this....
porky-b-199500-albums-backyard-outdoor-2011-picture1751710-001.JPG

This is when most of the plants in the backyard were put in the ground.(June 1st)

Coming up next....The Pig Pen.

The bulk of the Pig Pen is made up of a strain called ATF. It is one of my favorite smokes. It has a sweet smell and taste. And the high is exactly what I like. Very up lifting, giggly, long lasting, whats not to like?

We put in several rows of ATF on June 1st.
porky-b-199500-albums-backyard-outdoor-2011-picture1751711-002.JPG

Here is a shot of the same plants looking down from the deck.
porky-b-199500-albums-backyard-outdoor-2011-picture1751712-003.JPG

This is an all organic grow. We use compost, local soil, worm castings, Happy Frog, perlite, Sunshine mix #4, bat guano, bone meal, feather meal, kelp meal, Hell...all the
meals really, dolomite lime (lots of this), rock phosphate, Azomite, greensand, and a little bit of sulfate of potash to make it taste just right. Then stir.

This is the view looking the other direction with one bed still to be built.
porky-b-199500-albums-backyard-outdoor-2011-picture1751723-007.JPG

The extra space in the last two rows will have some untested plants in them. They are True Bubba, Sour Diesel, Blue Dot, and some UK Cheese I've grown before.

Now to fast forward.....

August 15
porky-b-199500-albums-backyard-outdoor-2011-picture1751724-008.JPG

The ATF plants are starting to form a hedge.
porky-b-199500-albums-backyard-outdoor-2011-picture1751713-004.JPG

This is a shot from down in the garden with a 6 foot ladder for scale.
porky-b-199500-albums-backyard-outdoor-2011-picture1751721-005.JPG

And here's a shot from the other end.
porky-b-199500-albums-backyard-outdoor-2011-picture1751740-011.JPG

This is a close up of an ATF stock.
porky-b-199500-albums-backyard-outdoor-2011-picture1751722-006.JPG

It's funny, these untried Blue Dot plants have a stock half the size of the ATF's but they are almost twice as tall.

Look at this Blue Dot plant next to the 6 foot ladder. It's got to be almost 10 feet and only just starting to flower.
porky-b-199500-albums-backyard-outdoor-2011-picture1751739-010.JPG

Here is a long shot with almost all the plants in it.
porky-b-199500-albums-backyard-outdoor-2011-picture1751738-009.JPG

And with that last shot we will say goodnight to the Pig Pen for now.
porky-b-199500-albums-backyard-outdoor-2011-picture1751741-012.JPG

More updates coming soon.

And now......on to Hog Heaven.

So after spending my morning watering and pruning around The Pig Pen, I get in my truck, put on some tunes, fire up a joint and head up to Hog Heaven.

I Drive for about 20 min. on a road like this.
porky-b-199500-albums-land-outdoor-2011-picture1751832-001.JPG

Then another 20 min. on a dirt road.
porky-b-199500-albums-land-outdoor-2011-picture1751828-002.JPG

And finally a 10 min drive down a private road.
porky-b-199500-albums-land-outdoor-2011-picture1751829-003.JPG

And that brings you to an old run down house at the edge of a canyon just shy of 5000 feet.
porky-b-199500-albums-land-outdoor-2011-picture1751821-007.JPG

Pretty soon I'll be staying here full time till the end of harvest. There is no electricity, no bathroom, no shower,no cell phone service and no internet......sigh.....home sweet home. hahaha.

At least I'll have my helpers with me.

Here's helper number 1.
porky-b-199500-albums-land-outdoor-2011-picture1751801-helper2.JPG

And here's helper number 2. As you can see he is worn out from all the help he gives.
porky-b-199500-albums-land-outdoor-2011-picture1751800-helper1.JPG

looking away from the house toward the garden you see this view. This pic was taken Aug. 15. You can see most of the plants in this shot except for two rows hidden in back.
porky-b-199500-albums-land-outdoor-2011-picture1751830-004.JPG

The strain line-up for this garden is a little different from the Pig Pen cause we are 3000 feet higher and the snow starts falling by end of October. So we need strains
that flower and finish early. That's why this garden is mostly Purple Gorilla and Purple Sour Diesel. We have grown them here before and they both did well. Also a number of
patients liked the strains.

I am also throwing in a few extras for myself - 4 ATF, 2 Lavender, 2 Space Bomb.

I am not kidding about the cold. This was taken June 20. Still snow on the mountains!
porky-b-199500-albums-land-outdoor-2011-picture1751820-006.JPG

Because these strains tend to flower so early we didn't put them in till mid June. (else they would trigger too soon and mess up their veg. cycle)

Purple Sour diesel went in June 19.
porky-b-199500-albums-land-outdoor-2011-picture1751771-001.JPG

Did two beds with Purple Sour Diesel and five beds of Gorilla.
porky-b-199500-albums-land-outdoor-2011-picture1751769-003.JPG

Last year I had a problem with branches breaking on the Sour Diesel. It has some of the most brittle branches I have ever seen. It's very hard to tie up or tie out without
snapping straight off of the main stalk. And near harvest time it gets bud flop real bad, then breakage happens again.

This year I think I have the answer......

Large scale SCROG. On July 23 I put fencing across all my Purple Sour Diesel's Like so...
porky-b-199500-albums-land-outdoor-2011-picture1751768-004.JPG

Now I can slowly train and support all at once.
porky-b-199500-albums-land-outdoor-2011-picture1751757-006.JPG

In a short amount of time its gone from this.
porky-b-199500-albums-land-outdoor-2011-picture1751756-007.JPG

To this. (Aug.15)
porky-b-199500-albums-land-outdoor-2011-picture1751770-002.JPG

Here is a side view of the Diesel's.
porky-b-199500-albums-land-outdoor-2011-picture1751755-008.JPG

So far it has worked out perfect. Even with the heaviest wind the plants don't budge. And not one broken branch yet.

This is what the Purple Gorilla looked like when it went in on June 19.

This is from July 23 when I put the fencing across the tops.

And here's one from August 15. You can hardly see the fence any more.

These are the four ATF Plants that were extras. I put them in 200 gallon smart pots on June 20.
porky-b-199500-albums-land-outdoor-2011-picture1751797-img-2697.JPG

Here they are on August 15.

They are only just starting to show pre-flower.
porky-b-199500-albums-land-outdoor-2011-picture1751799-img-3302.JPG

Well thats about it for now.

Time to say goodnight to Hog Heaven.
porky-b-199500-albums-land-outdoor-2011-picture1751823-009.JPG

I should have some more updates coming soon.

Porky

P.s. Sorrry in advance if I am slow to respond or answer questions but I am on a really crappy dial-up connection and I only have excess to it a few times a week.

this is pure awesome. thanks for sharing. must be a great experience. keep at it! peace!

yo man hog heaven is just that...heaven! An offgrid house with Garden and dogs.....that's the life man!!! I'MSOOOOOOJELLY!!

I'd give up my own grow to sit on one like that!!;-) YOU EVER decide you want some more help, you let me know...

yea i definatly like the area ur in thats my dream, to have a house out in the woods, no neighbors, and a beautiful garden just like that to wake up to

Thanks for all the kind words everyone!

holy shit that's a lot of big ass plants, what was your total yield last year?
My grow partner hates when I talk specific numbers. Lets just say more than 50........

Last year we had a ton of different untried (outdoors) plants and about half of them did not do so well. This time we are sticking with the winners from last year so our yield could be twice as much this year. :-P(I hope)

I'd give up my own grow to sit on one like that!!;-) YOU EVER decide you want some more help, you let me know...
Hahahah thats so funny cause thats kind of how I got this gig. I was living in the Bay Area doing my indoor thing and starting to wish I had a place to do a large scale outdoor grow again. Every year I would help my friend trim up his outdoor and I would say "YOU EVER decide you want some more help, you let me know". And now here I am.

So you never know.......... ;-)

P.s. thanks for the complement. Means a lot. I've seen your grows!

Question: Did you start from seed or clone? What date did they pop the soil?
All the plants are clones. I do grow from seeds also, but I test them first indoors and clone the ones I like. I took the cuttings for this years crop the beginning of April.

Porky

These were all taken today August 28.

First a shot of the whole garden.

Early resin production is always a good sign!
porky-b-199500-albums-land-outdoor-2011-picture1758482-005.JPG

And now on to the Purple Sour Diesel.

As you can see they are filling the space nicely.
porky-b-199500-albums-land-outdoor-2011-picture1758511-001.JPG

The Sour Diesel strain I have seems to keep growing the whole time it flowers.

Thats all for now
