Day 2

What's up everybody--

This is my third grow and I've decided to do a SCROG. I'm actually going to journal it this time with regular updates so that I can keep track of my progress and open it up for comments/questions/observations. Hope you enjoy.

Start with the basics--I'm running and Ebb and Flow Hydroponics system in 5x5 grow tent. I have a 1000w HPS bulb (Hortilux Enhanced Spectrum) which I'll be running through both veg/flower. I had a MH bulb for my last two grows, however it broke so now I'm left with HPS. Should work out just fine.

This will be a SCROG grow with mostly sativa dominate strains (minus the PE)--4 Chocolopes, 3 Jack 47s and 1 Pineapple Express. Even though it is usually recommended to run clones in a SCROG setup, I decided to go against this and start with seeds. Seeded plants aren't "mature" from the get-go and they take a little longer to branch out, hence why it's recommended that you use clones. Also, if you use non-feminized seeds you run the risk of having male plants, which are a bitch to untangle and take out of the screen. I have feminized seeds so shouldn't be too much of a problem tho I don't expect!

I germinated 9 feminized seeds with the intention of running 6 in the setup, however all 9 made it so I expanded the setup to include 8. I used the wet paper towel method, then transferred them to small rockwool cubes once the taproots were a few millimeters long. I placed the rockwool cubes in a tray filled with perlite, and set them underneath a t8 florescent light (you can get an idea from the pictures underneath). I kept them watered with 0 ppm water mixed with a small concentration of VooDoo juice (for root development) and some thrive alive. Watered only when necessary.

Some people ask why I use perlite in the tray. Well, from my experience, I like to keep the plants as close to the light as possible without drying out. I used to use a humidity dome, however this meant that I couldn't be as efficient with the fluorescent and I lost a few inches between the light and plants. Perlite has a large surface area, therefore when it's wet the water evaporates more quickly and it raises the humidity. This way, the environment stays nice a moist for the seedlings and I can keep the babies a few inches from the light. Not only this, but it also gives the roots something to grow into once they hit the bottom of the rockwool cube. I assume perlite is better than the plastic bottom of the tray. Either way, thought I'd pass this info along because it definitely helped me on my last grow.

Moving along, I then transferred the smaller rockwool cubes into larger rockwool cubes once the roots had pushed their way through. I do this because I like to give the plants a little bit more time to establish a root system before I put them into main system. I find that it increases the survival rate. This process takes about two weeks.

So now the fun begins! It's August 23rd, and the plants have been in the main system for 2 days. Like I mentioned previously, I had a 9/9 100% survival rate and the seedlings look great. However, I only had room for 8 so I'm keeping the last Chocolope off to the side under the t8 in case I lose one of the others.

Lets see--what else what else. Lots of stuff to cover lol so please don't hesitate to ask questions if I leave something out (which I probably will). Guess I'll handle my SCROG net. It was simple to build, just fashioned some eyehooks into a PVC frame and ran some garden twine across. Made it nice and tight. I have 4.5x4.5 screen and placed about 18 inches above the top of my buckets.

As far as nutrients are concerned, I'll be using the simple LUCAS formula with GH nutrients and a few additives. (https://www.rollitup.org/hydroponics-aeroponics/4387-lucas-formula.html). Additives include VooDoo Juice, Floraliscious Plus and a Mg/Ca boost.

On to the plants. They're a few weeks old but obviously just went into the system. I kept the PPMs low for the first day, around 300 and today I bumped them up to 400. Haven't used the Floraliscious Plus yet, waiting til next week or until they can handle it. This stuff is like crack and in my past experience, they seem to love it and grow like crazy once it's added. I'll probably wait until the roots come through the bottom of the interior bucket.

I have my lights on from 8 am til 2 am (18/6), with 4 flood cycles a day--when the lights come on, when they go off, and twice in between. I'll bump this once they get a little bigger.

I have a 6 in inline fan pulling air through a carbon filter, then the light, and finally discharging out of the tent. Keeps temps well under control. I also have a 6 in booster fan sucking air through duct w/ a filter linked to the exterior, replenishing air within the tent. Above the future canopy, I have an oscillating fan, and underneath I have a stationary blower fan. Hopefully I'll be pretty good in the circulation department.

I treated the plants with some Neem oil when I induced them to the new system. This should keep the spider mites good and far away from everything. Didn't do this for my first grow and it turned out to be a huge a problem. Learn from your mistakes right?

I guess with all of that being said, it's time to move onto the pictures! Enjoy, subscribe if you're interested, post away with comments/questions/whatever and expect an update soon!

Day 3

Third day in the system and roots are already through the bottom of the bucket for a few of the plants. Definitely a good sign; it's amazing how effective Voodoo juice is at getting their roots going. Time to bump the PPMs now that I know their roots can handle it.

Topped of the rez with some water and a mild solution of some more voodoo juice, Mg/Ca supplement and LUCAS formula ratios of Micro/Bloom. PPMs are now around 550. Ph is stable at 6.0.

Update soon--as you can see from the picture they've already grown a little bit in just under 24 hours.

Day 5

Not much happening other than the plants are a little bigger. I noted a slight burn on one of the Chocolope's lower leaves, so I ticked back the PPMs a little bit. Now we're in the upper 400's.

I also noted some spots on one of the other Chocolopes. Looked very similair to spider mite damage I had experienced in the past. I sprayed with Neem earlier this week so it didn't even cross my mind that I could have them. However, just to be safe I took my microscope and checked the underside of the leaves. I didn't see any mites, however I did see some eggs. This confirms the fact that they are indeed present, so to combat them I hit the plants with another dose of Neem oil. Hopefully this does the trick. If not then it's time to break out the no-pest strips again. I hate these fuckers.

Back with an update soon.

I like your set-up! Looking real good! I have a question if you don't mind? I am running a 2 bucket and res recirculating DWC using flexible tubing, I was having trouble with connecting the tubing to the grommet and bucket so I was wondering if you would do me a favor and on your next update, take a pic. of where your tubing meets your connection and grommet at the bottom of the bucket? Thanks, + rep for you!

Day 8

Not much to report--most of the plants have rooted through the bottom of the bucket and are starting to take off. This is definitely one of my favorite parts of the process because growth begins to multiply very quickly. I'll probably do a rez change today and re balance the nutrients. The Neem treatment I did the other day seemed to help...hopefully I don't see any more eggs/mites. Otherwise I may need to take more drastic action.

PPM's have risen to the upper 500's which tells me that the plants are taking in a little bit more water than they are nutrients, however it's not fluctuating too much so the balance is pretty close. On the next rez change I'll keep it steady for a couple days and then bump it up once the girls get a little bigger. PH is steady in the upper 5's/lower 6's.

Sure man! Check out below for some pics of my connections. I pushed the plastic tubing connector through the grommet on the inside of the bucket. Required a little bit of force. As far as the tubing is concerned, I took a glass of extremely hot water and soaked the end of the tube in it for a few seconds. The water expanded the plastic and made it a lot more flexible, making it easier to slide onto the plastic connector. Not sure if this helps or not but hopefully it does! If you have any more questions or want another pic or something please don't hesitate to ask.

Day 11

Update time. Plants are growing well. Changed the rez for the first time today, and decided to tick the PPM's back a tid bit. The Pineapple Express and Jack 47 are responding well to 500/600 PPM's, however the Chocolope's seem to be struggling (check out the pics below). I'm not sure what the problem is, but I'm assuming a little bit of a burn. It's not terrible, but we'll see if the clean water/lower nutrient concentration help them out. If so then I'll gradually work them up to a stronger concentration.

Here's what I added to bring the PPM's to 380-400; I start with 040 PPM water:

20 Gallons H20
15 mL GH Flora Micro
30 mL GH Flora Bloom
50 mL Ca/Mg
50 mL Voodoo Juice
1 tsp Floralicious Plus

I'll add more Micro/Bloom as the days go on, but hopefully the reduction helps the Chocolopes.

As I mentioned before, their roots are already through the bucket. I'm hoping they'll reach the screen within the next week and 1/2.

Check out the pics and please feel free to comment! (especially regarding the unhappy Chocolopes :-()

Day 29

Time for an update with pics. The plants have reached the screen, so I've begun to fill it in. They seem to be doing well except for the two in the front (one of the chocolopes and the Pineapple express). I'm unsure what the problem is because all of the plants are receiving the same amount of attention/care. The roots do appear to be a little brown on the unhealthy plants, which leads me to believe that it's a root rot problem. I've been treating the res with a low concentration of H2O2, so we'll see if they recover. Any other ideas what the problem may be?

PPM's have been around 550-600, but today I boosted it to around 660-680. We'll see how they react. Ph is constant in the high 5's/low 6's.

I'm planning on filling in the screen to around 60/70% and then switching to flower. I'll continue to fill for the first two weeks of flowering, and then I'll let those colas stretch towards the light. I'm hoping to flip within the next couple weeks.

I did another neem oil treatment about a week ago to keep those nasty spider mites away.

I've reached the exciting part!! Time to sit back, fill the screen and wait it out. Pretty soon I'll start trimming the undergrowth away.

Please post away with comments/questions/whatever, especially regarding the two sickly plants. Another update soon!!

Day 32

Update--

Not a whole lot has changed in 3 days. Plants are growing quickly--as you can see, the screen is filling in nicely. Just over a week ago the plants weren't even at the screen, so you can see the difference in just about 7 days.

So life is fairly simple at the moment, just filling in the screen and trying to spread the nodes out towards the exterior. I've also been trimming a little bit underneath the canopy and cutting away some of the larger, light blocking fan leaves. On the other hand, the Pineapple Express has turned around , and although she's still a shit ton smaller than her counterparts, the growth on top is full and looking good. I'm really thinking the boost in H202 helped. She wont give me as much screen coverage as the others, but just as long as I get a nice cola or so I'll be happy.

The chocolope on the front left is a lost cause. She never took off and there was definitely something wrong, I just couldn't figure out what the problem was. It's alright though--I still have three in the back! Although I still think I'm going to keep her in the setup and see what she does but I'm definitely not expecting anything.

Check out the pics, comment away and I'll answer any questions that are asked. Back with an update soon!

Day 37

Time for another update. Just a lot more of the same...forcing back under the screen with a little bit of weaving; just trying to fill the barren spaces. Everything is working out pretty well and they're drinking a lot of water, roughly over a gallon a day. This is forcing me to top off almost every night, which doesn't bother me in the slightest because of how healthy they are.

Like I previously mentioned, the Pineapple Express has made a full recovery and is growing quite nicely. She still isn't nearly as developed as the others, but she's definitely on her way and I should get something out of flowering.

Speaking of which, I'm thinking about flipping tonight. The screen is well over 60% filled. Remember I'm working with sativas (for the most part), so I'm expecting quite a bit of stretching. Check out the pics and let me know what you think. This is my first SCROG so I'll take all the advice I can get, especially when it comes to flipping into 12/12.

Thanks for following along and stay tuned for another update soon!

Struggling on the decision on whether or not I should flip tonight--looking for some feedback. Any experienced SCROG growers out there that could maybe help me out? Based on all of the research I've done, I know that I'm close. From past growing experience, I know that the plants are going to more than double in size, so looking at the screen and my personal situation, I'm trying to look at it and get a good idea of what it's going to look like. Screen is well over 50%...but I still have a lot of screen space in the back (as you can see from the pics), so should I flip now or wait for that to fill in a bit more?

Thanks!

Day 3 (FLOWERING)

Flipped the plants on October 1st. Can't wait to see how these are going to develop--they were looking mighty healthy going into flowering. Even after two days I have noticed quite a bit of growth--the screen is almost 90% full now. Bumped the ppms up to 900, will continue to increase marginally until they reach the expected levels of 1300-1400. They're drinking almost 2 gallons of water a day.

I'm planning on filling the rest of the screen and forcing under until day 14 or so. I'll start cutting back the undergrowth in a week or so, and progress until it's 100% bare.

Another treatment of neem oil tonight when the lights went out--once again to keep those nasty bugs away.

Check out the pics--sorry they're not that great and pretty fuzzy. Expect some better ones soon.

A few weeks from now and I think we're gonna have some juicy buds!!

Haha I was actually wondering if you were going to notice that. Good spot.

Gonna update today with some more pics. Got a new camera so hopefully they turn out a bit better. Plants look great btw...1 week into flowering and they're definitely growing uncontrollably lol.

Day 10

Over a week into flowering. Plants are looking great, the screen is 100% filled. Going to tuck under for another week or so and then it's off to the sky! Progressively trimming back the lower canopy.
