1000watt question?

this may be a dumb question but im just making sure. so i have read a 1k watt hps/mh light will illuminate a 4-5ft area, does that mean 5ft in all directions? like if i were to draw a 5x5 square?

im trying to figure out how many 5gallon buckets i can put under each 1k light for optimal growth?

5 gallon buckets are just less than a foot in diameter, so packed side by side you could get 25, but I would go with 16 - 4 rows of 4 buckets.

well im actually gonna have 2 1k lights and 2 400watt lights, in your opinion what configuration would u do for that?

Spenceg,

Were it me - I would go with the 16 (4 rows of 4) for each 1K light, and 9 (3 rows of 3) under each 400.

Will you be running seperate veg, and flower rooms thus only using part of the lights in each room?

wells heres my senario, i have 20 buckets that im doing bubbleponics style with and 20 clones so thats the most i can do. i normally would have seperate rooms for each cycle but im only gonna do one grow at this particular location. my goal is to get the most out of each plant obviously, so if i have to drop the number of buckets or plants im gonna grow, i will do that also.

I can only get 6 5 gal buckets under one 1000k Xtra 6 air cooled hood.
The plants are too big for any more thatn that!

also i think i read that i should atleast have 5000 lumens per plant so im trying to figure is 20 is too many? if not how should i arrange the 2 1k and 2 400 watt lights over the 20 buckets??

Truth be told it depends on the style of your hood. Some will only light up a 4x4 area efficiently others like a block buster or a magnum XXXL will light up a 4x5/5x5 better than other hoods. Granted the blockbuster and magnum are really fucking large hoods. These hoods are close to 3 feet wide...So they better spread light better.

Depending on your set up one 1000 watter can light 5-8 (8 is pushing it) large plants. 5 full sized plants being ideal since they'll be getting 200 watts of light each. I personally recommend you do sea of green instead. It's a lot more efficient to grow a lot of little well trimmed plants, then 5 large plants. You just get too many variance in weed quality from larger plants due to poor light penetration. HID lighting can only penetrate so far.

they r the regular air cooled hoods.

Are they cool tubes (i.e tubed shaped with wings on the sides)? or Air they squared off incased hoods with a glass lens on the bottom? If they're squared off in cased hood then the more squared shaped they are (i.e more event he sides) the better they will be at lighting squared off growing areas. If they are more rectangular the better they will be at spreading light in a rectangular direction.

P.S. if you use smaller plants not necessarily sea of green style tiny you can fit more plants under the lights and you're total yield might be better (event though you'll harvest less per plant) since light penetration will be better. Sea of green works off simular principles except you stager out the plants growth phases so you can harvest continuously every 2-3 weeks.

well my goal is to grow 20 and im gonna veg for at least 1.5 months maybe a lil longer to have big babies, so thats why im trying to figure out the best number of plants to put under 2 1k lights and 2 400 watt lights. 2800watts

20 is pushing it to the max. Keep in mind most plants stretch 2 to 3 times their size when fruiting. So a one foot tall plant may end up being 2-3 feet tall (and very bushy). A 2 foot plant will end up being 4-6 feet. Stuffing 20 full sized plants in a 5x5 or even 10x10 area might cause mold, pest, and lighting issues. You need to remember plants get very bushy and dense. I guess you might have to harvest the tops and wait a week or so for the lower branches to finish off. I've seen that done before. Realistically I'd just do 10-15 (15 being the max) plants under 2 1000w lights in a 10x10 area. It wouldn't shock me if you got the same amount or more smokeable plant matter off 10-15 well lit plants (and the buds over all quality will be better since you'll get less pop corn bud) as you would 20 crappy light plants. Or once again if really want a lot of growth just do a lot of little plants (30-40 or so) under each 1000 watt light. Basically you just clone a plant and once the clones root you start fruiting them and then trim them up at week 2 or 3 depending on the strain.

If you were going to do that many plants I assume you're going to light a 10x10 area with those 2 1000w setups.
