The room is on the "cold" side of the house, does'nt get very hot usually. Nevertheless i will monitor closely :)
 
Rarely gets over 25c ambient indoors here in NL so should be fine. Brick and mortar insulated houses keep the cold out but also the heat. I'd be more worried about too low temps in the winter. Not for the cobs of course but for the plants.

I like the idea of tilting them too, but, in this case it does not help the spread. With 12 cobs on a square you basically get rows of 4 and rows of 3 over the same distance. So there's more overlap with 4, and by tilting the outer cobs on the rows of 4 that overlap increases. Not saying they should not be tilted but I think it could have been used to get a more uniform spread with 12 on a square.

yeah, that could be a problem, running at night is a given for this ?............unless he has a better solution,autos?lol
 
Running at night can help prevent the plants from getting too cold during their dark period, but then it makes their light period colder. It's still one of my main concerns, running high ppf at suboptimal temps that is. I'm planning on building something similar as the OP, but with an enclosure that functions like a sort of reverse cooltube, a warm tube... It would utilize the exhaust for warming the environment and plants and cooling the leds. Attach ducting from intake to enclosure, and on other end connect ducting towards the bottom of the closet/tent, ideally to an air sock or similar spreading it across the bottom. It would a. recycle the heat from the leds, and b. create airflow within the enclosure which helps cool the heatsinks.

That, or autos lol. Seriously though, could be wise to grow some cold resistant nepalese or pakistan kush/indicas during the colder months.
 
very nice, Id be interested in seeing what kind of temps you get with a cordless infrared style therm. I wonder if temps would still stay sufficiently low in a warmer location grow tent, where temps reach 85F during the day for example. Nice price on those sinks, but ad I found says they only sell 100 or more at a time?

I was planning to run a few 3590's on 1,05A, so this is interesting.
Do you know how mutch 1 heatsink weighs ?

I myself have bought some old Xeon en Itanium server-heatsinks, witch fit a 3590 in a ideal cob holder.

Paid EUR 2,29 for the small ones (left, 450 gr Alu), 2,49 for the big middle one (650gr. Alu) up till 3,49 for the full copper one (700 gr)
Allready ruined a few heatsinks by bending them, so a fan will not fit anymore.
Was thinking of making a 350 mA - 700 mA cxb2530 setup with the bended heatsinks, but you give me new hope.

Hi @Netherfly , i was wondering how thick is the base on the heat sink u have,I contact the company u linked and got pricing on the same sink size with 6mm base (6 $),the catalog was saying 10 mm base. What size base is in your diy? (look like 10 mm) and what is the weight of the sinks ?

I just emailed the guy, and arranged a price for 22 heatsinks within 10 minutes ;)

Im thinking it would be easy to just bend 4 of the pins over, like half or 2/3s of the way up, so they are pointed out and then just make some holes in plywood and let the heatsinks hold everything. If you drill a bunch of holes and wire with extra wire, you could even move the cobs around easily, to add more light in one area, or less in another....

Many times I've emailed Alibaba vendors with MOQ's for a product I want saying that I liked the product they have but wanted to buy only 1 or 6 or whatever and asked if they could tell me a vendor or distributer who could supply my needs. Almost always, the answer comes back that they'd be happy to help me with that size order directly. Just ask.

What a sexy looking DIY grow light you have there! I'm about to build a 16 cob DIY grow light also with CXB3590s and also with similar passive heat sinks. I will be running them off of 2 HLG 185 C700A drivers and I didn't know how I was going to assemble my light until I saw this thread. Thanks for the great idea, I'm hoping my light turns out to be as cool looking!
