1st Closet grow, would love your input!

Hey Everyone,

This is my first grow, and I'm just about ready.

Here's what I've got:

  • Seeds x 12 (Skunk #1)
  • Fluorescent tube light x 1 (30w, Cool White - hoping to get one more)
  • CFL x 4 (2 x 40w 2700k, 2 x 19w 6500k)
  • 10" pots x 2
  • 4"-ish bio-degradable pots
  • Timer for lights
  • Thermometer
  • 1 fan, need another but I'll get that with my carbon scrubber if that's the route I go for odor control.
  • Webcam (not hooked up, meant more as a deterrant for my landlord. She's not allowed in anyway so it's really just to keep her from snooping too much if she's in my place for a valid reason).

Here's what I'm yet to get:

Odor control: Almost certainly going to go with a carbon scrubber but would need to section off my closet completely. Doable but it will be a bit more work than I'd like.
Humidity checker thingy: Not sure what they're called, not sure if they sell them, not sure what they look like. I'll be getting one but I'm pretty confidant I can worry about that after I get this started.
Soil: I'll be getting this sometime this week, once I have the soil I'm germinating. It's the only thing I need to have before I've got enough to start. Any suggestions here please! I'm in Canada, so I'm not sure if they have this "foxfarm" I keep hearing about, but it's definately noted.

Please take a look and let me know if you see any suggestions/ideas.

Thank you!

Thanks! I put the seeds in germination tonight, hopefully I'll be planting them very shortly. I've got the soil now so it's time to get this started! :)

Planted my seeds this morning. I only put two seeds in germ because I didn't want to waste any of them, and I'm glad I did. Both started to sprout (one slightly more so than the other) so I guess I'm lucky. Knock on wood hopefully I'll have the same luck with the genders! Once they sprout through the soil I'll be starting a journal in a new thread.

very basic, i would not expect huge yields, but a couple things i noticed:

- light is escaping and more importantly coming in through the cracks on the door. I would certainly seal those cracks somehow before sprout.

- humidity is important from day one. i would get a sensor immediately - pretty cheap

- depending on how big u are going to let them go, I would get pots bigger than 10"

i wish you all the luck and feminine chromosomes in the world:weed:

Yeah I was starting to think those pots were a bit small.. Thanks for confirming that, looks like I'll be out shopping for pots! The light wont be escaping for too long.. I'm going to be installing a carbon filter so it'll have to be airtight, so while I'm at it I'll make it light-tight as well :)

Humidity checker-ma-bob is on the to buy list.. though I still don't have a way to adjust the humidity...

More lights are coming as well, to hopefully help with the yield but I'm looking for an easy grow, not a huge turnout. I just want to grow enough to hold me over until my next grow.

Thanks for the input! Also, I have the lights on 16 on, 8 off is that right?

LIGHTS -

If they have not sprouted yet, keep them in total darkness until they sprout.
For entire veg, you want at least 18/6 can go as high as light 24hrs non stop

HUMIDITY -

as far as adjusting humidity, there are many easy and cheap ways:

to bring humidity up-
- buy a humidifier ($15 cheap - $80ish for topshelf)
- put a glass of steaming hot water for a daily bump
- leave a bowl of water
- misting
- any other method that causes h2o to evaporate in the closet

to bring humidity down -
- add another fan
- get an intake from outdoors
- thats pretty much it

heres a good article for humidity:

man, i dont mean to be rude in anyway, but have you read all of the stuff on Rollitup? I am just implying that some of your questions make me believe you havent really done any research. I just want you to be successful but that requires some good attention to detail and thorough planning and insight and that is just to get a yield. There is so much good information on this forum that I have been reading and researching these threads for 2 years now and I still have a ton to learn.

You're going to need a lot more light. I just finished a closet cfl grow and was running 12 42watt cfls during flower for two plants. I got decent yeild, enough to fill six mason jars, but I'm headed to hps for the next go:mrgreen:

No worries, but I can't see how anything I've asked makes you think I haven't done my research - I've only asked one question and it was about whether or not the lights should be on while it's still under soil.

There is indeed tons of information on RIU, I read it quite often but I dove into this project early because I have parents visiting in 3 months, so I really want these out of the closet before that! :)

Thanks for all of the information the link was useful too. One of them sprouted today and I'll be adding a ton of lights shortly.

I think I'm already down to one plant for now.. only one popped through the soil :(

Even one mason jar sounds like heaven to me right now as I don't have a (reliable) dealer so I've been without weed for about a month now.

I'll make sure to have at least 6 40watt cfls then, and I also have a fluorescent tube light that I'll have hooked up shortly.
