you should try and get a daylight (Blue Spectrum) or a dual spectrum...not really sure if red will work for seedlings.

a lot of people go with both blue and red in veg and flower. red on its own will work but i think it'll be a lot slower

If that is what you have, put it over your plant, and add the other one as soon as you can. It is not like it wil kill your plant..

Pukka-

Taken from "The Cannabis Grow Bible", Green Candy Press;

5000-8000 (k)- Deep Blue- Encourages excellent leaf and stem growth

4000-5000 (k) - Light Blue - Encourages good leaf and stem growth

4000 (k) - Neutral White - Promotes normal growth

3700-4000 (k) - Warm neutral - Promotes rapid growth

3000-3700 (k) - Warmer yellow neutral - Highly active photosynthesis for all stages of growth

1500-3000 (k) - Hot orange red - Promotes flowering.

Also, it is preferable to veg under 24/0 photoperiod. Plants don't need rest in order to perform properly.

I am a newbee as well and just got a book to get me going. You should spend the money and get it or one you like as well.

the blue lights definately make plants grow faster. i'd pick soem up whenever you can. red will still grow them but not as fast. the more lights you have on them the better and the plants will like a full spectrum of light so don't take down the red bulbs if you get some blue ones.

i used 3 23w blue or 6500k bulbs on my first grow and it turned out nicely. those cost me about 6 bucks at wal-mart

Yes, 18 hours will work. Veg under 18 hours seems the norm.
Get them under the lights and keep the lights about 1-2' above the seedling until you see it growing a little.
then get the light as close as you can with out over heating them. Keep light air movement going in the room.
