20/4 Lighting

Was just reading a little about 12/12 lighting, and its supposed tendency to spawn females. Is this true? or a urban weed legend? I have been on a strict 20/4 light system since seed (maybe a few days of 18/6 in the beginning) with 3 23watt cfl's. I'm wondering if anyone has any opinions or suggestions for this light system....

Switching to 12/12 will induce the flower cycle. This is how you will get your buds. Sticking on a higher schedule is for vegging (to make your plants bigger)

light cycle has nothing to do with the sex of the plant unless your flowering and have light leaks or your 12/12 cycle gets messed up and it turns it hermie.

The dark period need to be un-interrupted (no peeking). While you can grow plants with little to no dark period its advisable to give them a rest each day to release toxins. Most people use an 18/6 cycle during veg to keep plants nice and happy. The switch to 12/12 is made roughly after a month of vegetation or when the plant is ¹/³ of the maximum height you want them to be at the end of flowering. Weed usually grows 200% larger during flowering.

I usually keep my dark cycle for about 4 hours while i'm sleeping, so theres no need for me to go in or other lights to be on. Thanks for the info on growing during the flowering stages... good to know! :blsmoke:

Get yourself a few more bulbs if you can. Are you using 2700k or 6500k light spectrum? Pics would be good too.

As far as your actual question, & I'm thinking that you probably misunderstood what you were reading. As previous posters have said light cycle won't determine the actual sex of your plant, only when they show sex. Hope this helps.

Please post some information in regards to the toxin issue, I have never heard of that. 18/6 takes too long, I've always had plenty of success on 24/0.
