i dont mean to insult on CFL's but from my experience they are not cheap (not if you buy enough for proper lighting). yes one 13w CFL cost 20¢ but when you need about 20-30 of them to obtain adequate lighting, and you have to buy a fixture for each one it adds up fast and you end up spending more on CFL and fixtures than a reasonable HID kit. sure if your going to frow a small PC micro cab grow and only intent on haveing a 6 inch plant they are fine but lets face the facts, thats a complete waste of time and its cheaper and more economical to just keep on buying it at street value.
when i first started growing i used CFL, even defended them and suggested them to people, after about 2 years of growing and working on buying my second digital ballast i came to my senses and realized they are a waste of money. now i have $60+ work of just CFL fixtures lying around collecting dust.
my opinion, save the money before you even start to grow and buy a HID kit with a cool tube or air cooled reflector for 140-160 bucks. if you choose not to and go the CFL route then more power to ya, i dont have a problem with them, i wont tell you that your setup is garbage and be a dick about it but i will stand my ground that they are a waste, yes they can work but there are better alternatives out there without much of a price difference.
