400w hps/mh good or over kill?

Ok so i currently got 1 plant about 1.5 feet tall and has had a bit of bad luck. Was hit by mites young and took awhile to recover so its just now getting those big signature 5 finger fan leaves. So far i started it as a clone under 6 26w cfl and it sucked i mean bad slow growth and what growth i had made me think i should name it Stretch Armstrong. Sense then i upgraded and added a 90w ufo led and its been doing better bulking up and no more stretch and all the leaves look super dark green and healthy. However i have major worried about flowing under 90w led ufo and 6 26w cfls so i was looking at getting a 400w hps kit to flower but is this just way over kill and a wast of light or would one plant under that much light just grow that much more bud with out wasting the 50k lumens that the light puts out? Also is there such thing as too much light for the plant were you overload it or something? New to growing so all these are unknowns to me. Any tips would rock thx in advance. sorry to edit this in but another question i been using 10 52 10 for fertilizer is this any good for flowering or would 20 20 20 be better?

What size area are you growing in?

Rule of thumb is supply a minimum of 50w per square foot of canopy/growing area and a max of about 66w per square foot of canopy/growing area.Sure you can use more light tgan that but then cooling/ventilation costs go up to battle the heat and the light needs to be hung higher to avoid light bleaching/burn of the plant.

With that in mind...

A 250 is good for an area as big as 5 square feet or 2x2.5 and an area as small as 4 square feet or 2x2.

A 400w is good for a maximum area of 3x3 or 9 square feet, and an area as small as 2x3 or 6 square feet.

Also, read Ventilation 101 for all your ventilation/cooling needs.

the grow is in a large closet 4 feet by 3feet by 8 feet with a fan and i was gana skorg the plant in the next few days at that height and then try and just let it bulk up in term of ventilation thats the problem there is none i just leave the door open and its colder then shit were i live so i open a window in that room and it says 78 really simple and if i add heat i open the window more. the only thing that worries me is the smell i have a carbon filter air purifier in the room that so far eliminates all the smell to the point even with the door open there is no trace but i am only in week 2 of flowering so kinda worried it will become to much to filter and with my living area i cant afford to have that smell get out of hand the walls and celing and floor are all cement about 2 inches thick so i was hoping that would also help stop the spread of the smell and that with a fan pushing the air out a open window it would handle any odor problems. Also if push comes to shove i was told that ona gel kicks ass at removing odor from the air and its pritty cheap seen it at 30 bucks a pail. anyone think this would work or am i gana get the pigs knocking on my door?

ou8acracker, I absolutely agree. For the longest time I was just bullshitting trying to grow some weed. Its not as easy as you think. (unless you have a green thumb). Its taken me a longgg time to get everything perfect. Ie....lights, soil, watering ect.

Don't half ass it! It will be worth it in the end.

I dont mean to half ass but my bedget is tight i got 200$ to invest in it and i gradual grow it these are just meant to be learning grows so when i do have the 500$+ grow set up i am not totally lost with all the gadgets. I also have no idea what will and wont work odor wise thats why i have been going on if it works let it be if not upgrade until it suits the grow but i dont want to buy a product unless others have had good results with said product. Probably worth saying this is all for a personal grow to so 3-4 oz would be all i need every harvest.

I have no idea lol I only read the last comment, that's what I clicked on. You're asking if 400w is over kill for flowering? The answer is no. Plants love light. The more lumens you put out, the bigger your plant will be. I wouldn't suggest putting a seedling over a 400w though. But for a bigger plant in flowering, you will deff be fine.

You can get a cheaper dimmable HPS/MH light on amazon from Apollo. I have one, it runs perfect. its 125 for everything..2 lights (hps/mh), ballast and the light itself with a reflector.

The 400w is good. Not overkill. Cannabis prefers full sun (100,000 lumens) and moist, fertile, well drained soil. The 20-20-20 is better than the high P fertilizer you were giving it. Hope that helps. Also think about LST or another method to keep your canopy compact.:)

Okay,if going with the 400w HID you'll need an inline centrifugal exhaust fan from a hydro shop, not a duct booster fan from Home Depot or Lowes as duct booster fans don't handle pressure losses (from adding ducting, brnds in ducting, and carbon filters).

Secondly it needs to be kept light tight for when you flower so there are zero light leaks.

Thirdly, your passive fresh air intake needs to be twice the area of your active exhuast.

I would recommend a 6" inline centrifugal exhuast fan (vortex,can fan,eco plus,elicient,hurricane,sunleaves,etc.) and a 6" carbon filter.

But one thing I must know...what will the highest temperature of the air your closet will pull it's fresh air intake be?

400W MH is an excellent choice for a closet that size. It will produce a nice harvest without much fussing. I grow in the same size closet with a 600WHPS. But like everyone else says, you will need to exhaust the heat or leave the door open and yes there will be odor to deal with. You could exhaust through a filter and intake through an open window but you will have to close it up light tight every day for the 12hrs of dark. I have ducts that draw air from the crawl space and exhuast through the roof. The cooling air is led through a cool tube so it's never mixed with stinky closet air. But I own the place so I can make what modifications I like.
