400w lamp with a 600w ballast?

I'm not stating a fact as I'm not sure, so maybe I should just shut up but I was just researching on mh/hps's and I'm pretty sure I remember that some ballasts can and others cannot so it will require you to research your specific ballast.

So def look into your ballasts info from the manufacturer, thats where you'll find your answer.
 
Most ballasts unless otherwise specified can only run bulbs of the same wattage. So if you want to downgrade the bulb you'd have to purchase a 400 watt ballast. There are some than can do 400,600, and 1000 watt bulbs like the ones from Galaxy. But they are about 175-200 USD.
