I use a combo of sodium metasilicate and sodium percarbonate powder in hot water. Let it soak overnight. Rinse it out with hot water. Then its generally pretty clean. To make it spotless requires a second soak sometimes. $5 a pound. 1-2tsp will clean a large, filthy bong.

Of course, rinsing well is important after using any cleaning solvent. Acetone evaporates extremely quickly. The bitterant used in non-lab grade acetone is water soluble. It will have your pieces absolutely spotless in a fraction of the time it takes ISO to do the same job.
