it is hard to see... the trichomes will be little and clear at first, then they will swell and kinda tip over.. They go milky and then amber. You probably have about 2 -3 weeks left depending on strain.. Leaving them up longer rather than earlier will make you happier in the end.

Go buy a pocket microscope and look at a few random places on the leaves. Half should be white or clear and the other half amber. As far as I know thats the only reliable way to tell when it's ready.

Check the trichromes' coloring every day. A fairly decent jeweler's loop helps. Mine is 30x & got it off Ebay cheap. They will go clear, to milky then to amber. Depending on the strain you've got going, you can actually influence your buzz by watching the trichromes closely. Harvesting just as trichromes are turning amber yields more of a social, trippy, high buzz. Harvesting later and later the buzz moves more & more to a couch locked stoned.
