I've been a member for a little over a year and I have never seen an ad for ANY of these companies on RIU... The last ad I saw was for "CBD e-juice" it lasted less than a week. I hope they didn't
give up $26,000 for that joke.

Here's my Friday update, so I've made my decision on what plant im gonna enter for the comp and it's the Avengers cup, the spider man looks healthier but it's really small and super slow growing it's runt and the ninja turtle cup looks pretty straggly and not the healthiest and the Avengers cup is a lot bushier, think it might still have a little to much nitrogen but I'm gonna flush it today and see if it'll help but the new growth is looking really healthy and bouncing back. Stoked that they coming back around!!

They aren't really comparable. There is a difference between a post in a sub-forum and a banner ad. Correct me if I'm wrong, but they aren't paying you to put up a post about them, they are paying you for banner ads, right? Banners that show up at the top and side of every page, and at the bottom of every couple posts, so that $26,000 is really buying them several million ads, so if they really care about single posts here or there, and think that it somehow affects the efficacy of their banner ads, they desperately need to send their marketing department back to school, because this is day 1 stuff. Advertising wise, I don't see how this is any different than pretty much EVERY thread in the seedbank review section, since by this standard pretty much EVERY thread and post there is free advertising. ALSO, consider this: You are saying that stuff like what is already happening would make them stop paying you. BUT, this stuff IS happening, and you have a whole line of companies waiting to hand you cash! The reason you don't have paid advertisers is, AS YOU SAID EARLIER, you have tried over and over to get the site owner to respond to the advertising requests, and he hasn't. So it's not fair at all to say "If we allow this we'll stop getting ads" because that's just factually not the case. This "Free advertising" IS happening, and there ARE companies WAITING IN LINE TO HAND YOU ADVERTISING MONEY. The reason they stop paying you is because you stop accepting money, not because you allow competitions that draw more people to your site and thus more views to your ads. This competition would make that ad space MORE valuable, not less valuable.

Until yesterday, I thought riu was already getting paid by the party cup sponsors, to be honest. Why not RIU just acknowledge the party cup competition and sell sponsorship slots for certain size ads to go on the logo? I bet you you'll end up getting offers from companies you didn't expect, like red bull trying to buy slots.

Seriously, I thought the sponsors were a clever fundraiser for rui setup by the mods themselves until a day ago when I realized just how disorganized this all was...

I see the issue here as I set this up, no help from mods, admins, or anyone other than RIU members, RIU is upset that the sponsors are spamming and getting free advertising.

At the start of this thread, I see a giant logo with a ton of sponsors on it, and the rollitup "brand", as well as the title "official". Given all those points, I would have assumed that the moderators were not only consenting to all this, but that they were the ones that worked with the sponsors. I'm actually a bit shocked that something called an official rollitup competition could have independent sponsors blatantly breaking the rules...

Why did you need sponsors to setup a contest? You have no overhead for running this contest.

Don't get me wrong, while I did give a snarkish response to potroast, I totally agree with him that it's absurd to use his brand to negotiate sponsorship slots. I also can't understand how it took potroast this long to realize that there were "official" sponsors offering an inda-grow to the winner? That's ridiculous.. The sponsors should be paying potroast for the logo slots, and potroast should be using some of that money to offer prizes to contestants boost the popularity of the contest and to draw in more contestants... I guess that's just my opinion..

Rules are rules and sometimes you gotta break em' to in order to confirm whether or not they should even exist. Looks like the RIU staff was caught snoozing and the community wide awake, looking to place a few ribbons and earn a few neat prizes!

Don't we, as the community of users, give reason for companies, like The Attitude, to even consider paying for ads (that are pointless imo; newsflash, everyone hates ads, welcome to the 21st century) through posting our comments and sharing of knowledge?

I mean if it weren't for the brains, who carry all the wisdom from the past wizards, that make this site what it is, I wouldn't even be here wasting my time posting photos or chatting with cool cats like Churchy. Does that mean RIU should pay for the star players that GIVE people a reason to come AND stay here, thus attracting countless members and reinforcing companies to consider buying ads? It's up for debate.

One more point directed at the admins and staff:

You guys do a fantastic job at keeping the site operating, with a few exceptions here and there when the server boots down but for the most part the site is stable and functional. Here's my thought: This site is possible because of you guys but this isn't the only website/forum dedicated to marijuana-related matters, so just because we use your product/forum, doesn't justify some of the stipulations that you place on the community. Specifically, besides the above-average user interface, I can go anywhere else to get something very similar. I don't think the community brains are any brighter elsewhere, so that is one of the stronger things you guys have going for you here at RIU.

In conclusion, I believe the RIU staff/owners need to take this case of sponsors in a public growing competition into a different consideration and maybe realize that the sponsors are helping out the people that have been and continue helping out, not just financially but educationally, those who run and monitor this site.

Also, I don't think many people are going to the competition thread and are instantly like OMG! I have to go buy these products! No, they entered the thread to see some wild cats grow some midget dank.

Dude, chill the fuck out. It's a fucking thread and the competition is for fun. Some of us here are attempting to help out the contestants anyways, so I really don't see where you're coming from.

And I was registered at the beginning of the competition, so unless Frozen took me off the list after not submitting anything, then I'm technically fine.

I won't be posting anymore here though, as I don't want to upset you or anyone else for standing up for you all.

in the other comps there was ni banner. Riu wasn't mentioned in the name of the comp. the prizes were only mentioned on the first page of the comp thread. Prizes were given via email not through riu. The prizes were sent direct from company to winner . An inda gro 420 for the winner may sound ridiculous. But if you knew Darryl. You would know how generous he is. He doesn't care about the advertising. He just likes helping growers. He's done so much for so many people. The lights and customer service speak for them selves.

frozen should not have made those banners. It did make the comp seem more professional though. Inda gro makes more off their aquaponics set ups than their lights.

honestly if riu doesn't like it. And they want to stop the comps. Then they should stop all threads of people growing from seed and get rid of the breeder section and get rid of the design section. Block all pics of lights and seed packs. And block names of strains and soil and nutrients. my point is if they axe one they should axe all. Otherwise get over it.
