Is there anyway to know if your res is getting algae buildup before seeing it?Ive been keeping it cool 67-70 degrees but sometimes goes to 73-75 before I add ice and frozen water bottles.Im just wondering what guys use to know if theyve got funk in there res?

I touch the inside of my rez or any of the equipment in it, if I feel a little gunge I know its time to change the solution. Although I do use Hygrozyme to get rid of pathogen growth & I can still see bits of algae in the water, doesnt seem to affect the plants.

Thanks iloveit! Ive heard about hygrozyme.I think I'll get my ass to the hydro store 2day and grab some of that.Ive been changing the res every week so far just to be safe, but that was before I was keeping the temps down. What type of nutes do you use?Im still debating what to get.Ive only been using clonex right now for my clones but soon I will need some.I use fox farm nutes for soil. Thanks again!:peace:

About the algae: Is there any light exposed to the res even from a little hole? Algae cant grow unless the environment is perfect, temp, humidity, light all come in to play.

Im using hydroponic Ionic nutes because they are one part nutes perfect for noobies but when it runs out im going to have a try at Vitalink (not that Ionic is no good) its the one that "9inchBB" has recommended "Heath Robinson" uses it also so that says something. I have my mother plant in soil Ive began feed her BioBizz grow every few waterings & it has grown very quickly. Foxfarm nutes arnt available in my country but Ive heard many good things about there products.

Very minimal light getting in,maybe around net pots but very slight.I try to keep them in tight. I grabbed some hygrozyme at the store.Im wondering if I should wait till I change the res again before using it?That shit isnt cheap thats for sure.Ive been changing it once a week.I was looking at all the nutes at the store.so many that sound good its hard to decide.Ive still got a little time. Thanks for the help and advice,I appreciate it.:peace:

No problem just passing on what Ive been taught by other members.
I prefer to mix nutrients & additives at the same time to make one solution, in other words I never add anything once the tank has began its first circulation through the system so add the Hygrozyme next time you refill your tank & you only need to start off with the minimum dosage (8ml per 4litres I think).

Thanks for the help man:mrgreen: Im making a new lid painted white with the correct hole size for my 2" net pots.the 1st lid I made i had them too big and ended up putting tape around them so they wouldnt fall through, and I think thats letting in 2 much light. But regardless 6 of 7 clones have gotten roots or root bumps,so Im good with that.Im going to switch to a new rez(white) and lid with my hygrozyme,on the next res change.some pics from 2day.:peace:

You dont have to switch to a new rez becauseof the colour , just cover it.
Yeah im gonna cover it with something eventually Added my new lid into the mix. I changed out my res yesterday.Added the hygrozyme at min. strength.clonex solution,ph'd to 6.0.Im good to go.Ive got a bath exhaust fan pulling cool air from the window blowing right on the res.,its working good for now.temps 65-68 in res.put some new clones in today.got home from work no wilting of any sort.Ive got alot of frothy bubbles in there,is that something that happens with the hygrozyme? some pics of this a.m.:peace:

This was a concern when I first started using it, now I just stir it around once a day eventually it goes away.

Thats cool as long as it dosent bother anything. At first I thought it might of been from not rinsing the res enough, after cleaning it out with mild bleach water.I wasnt expecting it when I first opened the lid to the res yesterday:o So how long can I go without changing the res with the hygrozyme in there now?Ive been changing weekly . Thanks for your help iloveit:clap:

No probs dude even though Im on my first grow Im picking up a lot of things from members on RIU so Im only passing on the knowledge.
I also change my res once a week but only because my 4 Blueberrys drink nearly all 30L from the tank. Id say allow your plants drink up all of the water until your next res change unless the PPM increase or decrease then change the res & mix new solution.

Things are lookin good in there today.Ive been able to keep the res around 65-70 degrees. The 4 new clones i put in there never even drooped or anything.some already have root bumps on them in less then a week.;-) I mixed the water up the other day to get the frothiness down and its gone now. Thanks for the reassurance that it wasnt a problem.
I have ppm meter now and mine is around 1000 ppm.Ive been trying to find out what to be at with clones but everything Ive read varys from 6-800 to 1000-1500?? Im assuming the clonex is making it that high. How do you use ppm to determine what you need to do with your setup? If you dont mind me asking. Thanks again for the help iloveit!! :peace:Bro

On the first day of mixing your solution (nutes/additives) you do so at a certain amount of PPM in your case 1000PPM. Then the next day take the reading again if the PPM begins to fall to lets say 900PPM that means your plants are taking in more nutrients than you originally added. In this case you should refill the tank with new solution but add more nutrients but to the limit of the difference. In other word you began at 1000PPM & decreased to 900PPM so you should mix new solution at 1100PPM.
Now if the next day your PPM reading increases to about 1200PPM when you orignally mixed it at 1000PPM that simply means that your plants are rejecting 200PPM because they dont need the difference.
Does that make sense?

It makes complete sense.Thanks.Ive only got clones in there so far so there really not drinkin much with no roots.which makes sense that my ppm is the same.tonite it was 1030.so far I have roots or bumps on all clones.so somethings workin good.
I have a little discrepancy with my temp readings.the aquarium meter with probe in the bottom of the rez reads 4-5 degrees difference from my ppm/temp meter, with readings from the top of res.could there be that much difference in temp from the bottom to top of res?I wouldnt think so,how bout you? I think I trust the $40 meter from the hydro store more than the $7-8 aquarium meter!? Thanks for the help bro:peace:

I have 5 hygrometeres & every single one is always a degrees or two out so dont worry about it too much.
