What can I use to control it. My friend reccomends using a pool/spa anit allge. Do you think that will work?

Yep... just make sure what you use is not harmful to fish and plants. If you can cover the area so it doesn't receive light...

If you run inorganic nutrients you can add h202 to your res (for my ~50% strength h202 it says to add 3 ml per gallon). The H202 will get rid of the existing algae but keeping it away is another thing. Algae grows in conditions where water is exposed to light; adding nutrients to that only serves to speed it up I think.

i just wash my flood tray every time i do a res change its a pain in the ass but it works great. the algae will come back but it will take a few weeks and i do a res change every week so its GONE I wouldnt use any additives just some elbow grease.
