Planning a trip to Amsterdam, we are looking at staying near or in the Red Light District. Some questions I have for anyone who has ever been;

How much money to take?
Best part/Worst part of your trip?

Any other useful information would be sweet.

been there twice man there is no worst part of the trip if your gonna drink in the pubs bring a good bit of money but if u just wana smoke it aint that dare some coffe shop give 2.5 grams for 15 euro rasta baby had 3grams of super skunk for 20 euro and its near central station! i stayed in the delta hotel the first time and it was across the road from the red light distrect but if you wana smoke in th hotel stay in the acro!

Have any shitty things happen when you went? Alot of people been telling me they got mugged and shit, ha.

no man i went on my own the first time and i was a lil paranoid but every thing was cool! theres loads of people tryin trying to sell coke at night i didnt chat any of them so maybe theyd rob ya! the shittist thing that happened is some of the coffe shops aint that friendly but if your not on your own you'll be grand! make sure you go to the dampkring growshop last time i was there they had a l.a con growin five weeks in to flower with a carzy amount of crstals! so they prob have something real good going now!

i came back from dam in feb 09.

its really expensive compared to home (UK). because of the weak pound against the euro it was working out like £2 for a can of coke/pepsi. not sure what the USD is like with the euro. u will need plenty of money anyway.

if u havnt booked a hotel yet, i can suggest a few. first of all Hotel Di-Ann which is near dam square which is near red light. it was the cheapest hotel we found and you can smoke ur weed in their rooms as well. plus the rooms were a really good standard compared to other hotels and the price they were charging.

i was buying bags at around 8 euro for 1. something gram of some good shit, white widow, ak47, jack herra. some other bags vary in price and where u get them from. most expsive bags was like 18 euros but then again u need get 3.5g's so its all worth it really.

edit: oh yeah i forgot. theres no muggins or anythin but around the red light and Damrak (main street in amsterdam from the central strain station) there are guys trying to sell u hard drugs and weed! yes weed! dont buy anything from them because its probs shit. but some of them are cool guys. last time i went, i had to step outside the hotel to smoke a ciggerette every morning after breakfast and the same guy was doing his route and we used to have a chat every morning. no harm in that. he wasnt pressuring me to buy his coke but we had a laugh, so not all are bad. u will more than likely be paranoid though the first time u go. trust me,lol.

Id of bought of his coke and sniffed it up.

Go to the Dampkring coffee shop, when you get off the train station just walk to your right and you will find it, then buy some L.A Confidential.
That was the best part of my trip...

I got so wasted the first night there that I was in pretty rough shape for the next day or two. (I bet a lot of people do that) I stayed in a place called Hotel Arena, it was pretty cool.

Amsterdam is pretty expensive, but then again, so is most of europe. Weed most places is between 10 and 15 euros for a bag that's anywhere from 1.2-2.5 grams depending on the quality. For example, 1.8g of afghan hash at blues brothers was 10 euros, while 1.4 (or 1.6 don't remember exactly)g of bubblegum from the grasshopper was 15 euros (best smoke i had). You generally get what you pay for within a given coffeeshop, i.e. if their white widow is 15 euros for 1.5 it's going to be better than some superskunk that's 10 euros for 1.5. Some coffeeshops are more expensive for the same smoke you could find elsewhere cheaper though so stay away from the 'brand names' like the bulldog, grasshopper, grey area etc. if you're on a budget.

I don't know about hotels, but the flying pig hostels are awesome. The downtown one has a great bar with a deck to smoke on, and a stage with all kinds of cushions to chill out on, I highly recommend it.

the first night i was there i smoked a spillf of just white widow in a place called kasmir lounge i was out of it i walked down to the grasshopper and was lookin at a sign that said coffee shop on the first floor for about five mins! tryin to work out which was the firdt floor

I got mugged there. Nothin I could do either. Two very big turkish dudes cornered me and my younger brother (16) Shook us down and fled. Tried to get away as much as I could but those guys are big. I diddn't have a very nice experience there at all. We had some fun allright when we got mushrooms etc etc but wont go there again. Maybe I'd go to Rotterdam but thats about it. A bit of advice: Stay away from street dealers. No matter how attractive their deals seem.
And dont talk to crack heads. I gave one a cigarette and we were stuck with him for about 2 hours walking around the red light district meeting all kinds of unsavoury characters. When ever I suggested we part he got quite defensive. Had to just make a break for it in the end.

don't talk to anyone on the streets - drug dealers (who don't actually have drugs they just want your money), crackheads, bums, whatever

they'll whisper a list of drugs they don't have in your direction, just ignore them. stay to busy areas and you'll be safe. it's really not dangerous, at least I never felt unsafe anyway

psssst! extasy, heroin, cocaine? just ignore them and they`ll usually fuck off, was there for NYE and again at end of feb. try the chrystal clear iso hash at c/s Katsu, you`ll love it, its a way of life
