All I can say to that is that I was running 26W/sqft of 860W CDM and my results didn't look anywhere near that sexy!

Here's the thing; watts per square foot is a number that doesn't quantify what you're really after, which is light intensity in the plant active wavelengths, or PAR. PPfD is the measure of light intensity of PAR light over a given area.

Sooooooooo, why are watts deceiving? Because higher efficiency lets you get the same PPfD with less watts- which is exactly what these pioneering new ultra high efficiency setups are proving.

Put another way, his 238 watts clearly just produced results in a completely different league than a 250W HPS setup would manage. In the final analysis, efficiency- measured in PPfD/Watt- IS everything.
 
yeah to me,
as a new person to COB's newer tech but not LED
to be buying cob's ( IF one looks long ) y'd never buy a 3070 due to a 3590 actually costs less when u use it
And I'm all about starting at the bleeding edge not following the 1st wave that's all ready on the beach
i learned my lesson with my Mars if you go long then get quality equipment it costs actually less after the books close

I hear ya, but there is always going to be guys going for the best ROI (return on investment) and guys going for the best, period. That's why I said I wonder where the line is! Look at captain morgan's plants, awesome quality and awesome yield, considering low power consumption... Its hard to tell from pics alone but I think the grow I just finished using around 60 watts per sq ft with the A51s grew much denser, bigger, and maybe frostier nugs. No offense to captain morgan because my setup was way overkill. I think I could achieve similar results with 40-50 watts per sq ft, not with 26 watts per sq ft.

I think that we are at a point with COBs that even if they go down in price and become more efficient, the ones we can get today will still perform well 10 years down the road. Same with my old a51 AF600s, they are outdated but I am at the point where they are paid off and running them for another 5 years seems like a better option than replacing them with the newer tech.

This is all true. I'm up to no good in my secret basement lab, hard at work on a way to cut the installed cost of top of the line COB LED by as much as half, even at commercial scale.
 
@Airwalker16 they are 800ma drivers and I posted a pic of the driver board in post #179.

@GreenSanta I have two of these lights now so I'm thinking of replacing the drivers on one and going with 1050ma to see what it does to my yield. If my math is right I would go from 740 PPFD and 26.5 watts sq/ft to 1060 PPFD and 39.5 watts sq/ft. The light would go from 63% to 60% efficient if my math is right.

Breaking 1gpw with my cobs will be a happy day for me, then Ill set my sights even higher.
This grow cant be measured as I have swapped and changed stuff throughout flowering.
 
GPW can be very deceiving and there are so many variables,I use it for comparisons with my set ups and not to compare to others. You can use it for a goal to achieve or if someone had a similar set up with the same strains it could give you a number to shoot for. My set up is designed to get max yield with ease of care and low risk of disasters and I'm running top shelf strains that also yield very well and I seem to have their needs dialed in pretty well after running them for going on two years.

I have rarely ever run the same thing 2x, and run several strains at once further complicating matters.
I have never run a single strain solo as a matter of fact
