Any Tips or Advice on Improving My Closet Grow Room. Pics Included

This is my first grow im about 2 weeks in. It is a closet grow space that is 24inches x 37inches (2'x3') and it is 65inches tall to the closet rod, but if i cut out the rod the ceiling is almost 9ft (105inches). Right now i have a 250watt ballast and bulbs, 2 fans one oscillating on the plants and one blowing up and out the space above my closet doors. my dad has a 400 watt lamp that he will give me so i might be upgrading soon.

my temp and humidity are good, but the plants are starting to smell, so i was looking at carbon filters and air scrubbers, but i read somewhere that they are pretty pointless if the space isnt closed off, and also during flowering there needs to be complete darkness, so should i make a box, or cabinet type thing? with an exhaust or idk, any ideas or anything to get my mind a jumpstart lol

Thanks

Hi, Looking at the pics i didnt notice a door? If u have a door on the closet and i missd it i apologise, If you dont have a door i would make a frame around the entrance to the closet with 2x2 timber and make a simple Z frame door out of plywood and some 2x2. Is that an open gap at the top of the closet as well? On pic 2

I would get your clothes out of the closet pretty soon or you are going to reek of the ganja when you wear those clothes that are hangin' with your girls!

You are going to need a light proof door for flowering and then you will need some kind of air exchange through a carbon filter. If you are a DIY kind of person, then hang heavy curtains or, as someone suggested, frame in the opening and put a door there. Easiest is to invest in a grow tent such as

http://www.amazon.com/LED-Wholesalers-GYO1008-Reflective-Hydroponic/dp/B002V9PBXO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1306154303&sr=8-1

The odor is going to get much stronger when you start flowering.

What strains are you growing?

@exelency thanks they are getting better 2 were a little strained

@belesar Well there is a sliding mirror door like regular closet doors but in front of the plants there is no door inside the closet

@ RasCai Thats my close my husbands is on the other side lol, but im thinking of getting on of those portable closets and putting it in the closet and sealing up our close in it

@zvuv I wanted to convince my husband and his friend to build me a cabinet type box, they arent construction workers lol, but im sure if i draw up a sketch and supervise my mexican workers LMAO i think they can handle

the strains i have going now are Headband my big sativa bitch and roadkill she had nute def problems are first but she just sprung back and is getting huge that one is the one that smells the most and Skywalker og shes a fatgirl and she is starting to get a nice light smell too, and last but not least my 2 new clones are GG(Gods Gift) and Kryptonite OG.

Do you have any experience with these strains? i tried getting some info on them and their grow styles but all i seen were bud reviews lol

if you really want to improve your yield i would recommend using the ScrOG technique. I use it even outdoors (or a variation) when height isn't an issue.

I would FIM that tallest one to keep the little girls the same height. i would also recommend using smart pots so they don't get root bound.

whats ScrOG technique?? and whats the difference between regular pots and "smart" pots lol, and by fim you mean topping???

FIM is an acronym for Fuck I Missed, its like topping but instead of cutting them you just pinch the tops. ScrOG is also an acronym, Screen of Green. check out one of my grows and you will see. there is also a good thread started by woodsmantoker called scrog growers unite, i think. check under my subscribed threads and you will see it. smart pots are felt pots that allow the roots to grow out of them, they then become air pruned but the plant doesn't now it is dead so they keep growing. smart pots will give you much bigger plants than conventional plastic pots and they will protect your plants from ever becoming rootbound.

cat, I notice you have two sliding doors thats are mirrors. ABOVE those doors, is that an open gap?

Can you make modifications to that closet? AS in do you own your home? Whats ABOVE that closet? an attic?

Personally I's just cover that gap above your closet doors (if that is what I'm seeing)

Get weather stripping and run it around your closet doors ( make it light tight by whatever means possible)

get a 4" or 6" exhaust fan and carbon filter. cut a hole in the ceiling and exhaust up there ( depending on whats actually abover there)

Well I like the closet. Can't say the same about that black and white stripey thing hanging on the rack. Girl you need to go shopping. What were you thinking? :))

Seriously a 400w will be kickass in there but you are going to need to do something serious about the heat. That's the most challenging part of setting up my closet. I am going to try a 200cfm inline blower to evacuate all the heat from the lamp. Come July, I may have to install AC anyway.

More light, exhaust the room thru a carbon filter, get ready for some vented light action if you get serious. Seal off room for light leaks. 12on 12 off means EXACTLY that. 12 on then random lights during the 12 off not = too good! Plants are sensitive to light, that TV could be enought to screw you during flower. And smell? Just you wait, about 3-4 weeks into flower and the people down the road will be knockin'. Good luck to ya! And get that 400 going pronto!!

@robert Thanks man imma look that shit up

@lamb yea that is a gap, i figuered that gap is helping me keep the temp down cuz i have never had it over 80 and i have a fan blowing the air out that weird ass gap, and to the closet i can do as i please, =) all open for any destruction lol and about this closet idk =/ i think tha roof, imma have to check it out, and if i just cover the gap the doors arent at all anywhere near close to being sealed, you can see the light all around each door, i got a 6'' exhaust fan my dad just gave me, i gotta invest in a carbon filter and exhaust, and wat if i just vent into the wall LMAO the walls have a space between them like 2 inches would that be a horrible idea? LOL

@zvuv HEY...!!! Thats a hello kitty zebra jacket..!!! dont mess with hello kitty that bitch will eat you in your sleep LOL jayyy kayyy... i never really had a problem with heat at all, hopefully i continue to be soo lucky, but we have a window fan that is usually on all day even when its cold or while we sleep lol we like our room nice and chili lol

@shaunus more light, check, my dad gave me a 400 watt ballast and im working on connecting it now. exhaust thru a carbon filter, completely NOT checked, i gotta figure out a way to exhaust and i hear if the room isnt sealed off a carbon filter is pointless, is this true???

Ok..ok... didn't realize it was Hello Kitty. I take it all back.

The space in the wall probably wont work. Most likely thats the gap between the studs in the framing and its a small enclosed volume. If you do manage to pump air into it, you need to filter it anyway. It will be venting somewhere. I go through the floor into my crawl space. Into the attic is a good option. In either case it must be filtered. It's a very distinctive smell and you will lose your sensitivity to it being around it all the time. A carbon filter is easy and cheap to build. Even through a filter its best not to vent directly to the outdoors. Do a google or search on this site for DIY carbon filters and set your Mexicans to work.

The closet doesnt have to be absolutely air tight. Probably your light proofing will be more than enough for that. What you want to pay attention to is, positive or negative air pressure. Is your ventilation system trying to suck air into the closet, in which case you are fine. Or does it try to push air out through what ever gaps it can find, in which case you are fucked.

You also have to think about what happens when you open the closet door to work on those ladies and let a lot of smelly air out into the house. This gets to be a real problem during flowering. An odor suppressant like Ona can help a lot.

Ahhhh Your making my brain run like a million miles an hour lol, so what would you do if this was your space???

Well the standard plan for closets is

An inline vent fan with a carbon filter on its intake. Somthing like:

http://cgi.ebay.com/4-INLINE-FAN-CARBON-FILTER-COMBO-ODOR-CONTROL-SCRUBBER-/120624082653?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c15c16edd

(you just need the fan, the filter can be DIY. I found a 4" 200cfm fan for $85 on ebay )

The air is then routed through a Cool Tube which encloses the bulb such as:

http://cgi.ebay.com/6-COOL-TUBE-AIR-COOLED-GROW-LIGHT-6-INCH-YOYO-HANGERS-/190536242499?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c5cd85543

The exhaust from the cool tube is then routed through a crawl space or attic.

4" ducting will be big enough for your closet. This will set you back about $200.

You also need an air intake for the closet which can be just a vent into the room holding the closet. The intake has to be light proof which means making a baffle box (again the Mexicans can help here). I like to intake air from my crawl space since that is cool.

I am not recommending any of the items listed. They are just by way of example.

If you still have temp problems then you can turn on the AC in the room (if you have it). Frame an AC unit into the closet wall (if one of the walls is an exterior wall). Buy a portable AC unit (expensive). Run the lights only at night (helps some). Run the lights with the closet door open and a big fan blowing into the closet ( last resort ). The temps should be around 75F. Perhaps others have some better ideas.

If they get too hot, they can go into survival mode where the females produce male flowers and pollenate themselves.

so should i make a box? or just put a piece of wood at the top with some hinge things to the wall and make some kind of door? or should i make an actual closet thing like in this pic

Thanks so much for your help

You have the walkin. It's a great grow space. Making that small closet wont be any less work or much cheaper than converting the walkin. It will be very cramped to work in. You will much more limited in the number of plants you can grow and the height they can grow to. It will be much too small for a 400W lamp. The tighter the space, the more trouble you have with heat. You still have to filter and dump the exhaust. I say stick with the walkin :)

I am setting up a closet that's about half the size of yours. It should be done in the next few days. I will post pix and comments. The thread is in my sig.

oh yea thats a nice little closet, i like how it has a door and everything, mine doesnt cause it is the corner of my closet, so how do you suggest i seal off the room? just by making a door? and putting a board for a roof? cuz i need to figure out where to put an exhaust, i already figuered out which wall im gonna vent thru, now im trying to figure out how to seal it up for flowering =)
