i always start them from a store bough pineapple.

i cut the top off and tear off the leaves from the bottom till you expose about an inch of the base. you will see dry little brown roots that started at the very bottom, its ok to tear off leaves a little above this cuz it exposes more spots for roots to grow from. you let it sit overnight to dry out the base so it doesnt rot when you plant it.

ive started them a few diff ways... ive used cloning gel, which you dont need, you can just stick it straight into you fav potting soil. they seem to like any kind of dirt but they do grow fasted in a more aerated medium.

ive also just left one in a cup of water for a few days outside and it sprouted root like that. right now i have one in a coffee mug with an airstone in there and its doing great.. already been growing about a month. they grow alot faster if you start them this way also.

ive had 2 that are growing in a small amount of soil compared to their size and these thing can take some major abuse... i left the soil bone dry for a long time in the hot florida sun and they seem to love it. i also use a basic veg fert about once a month sometimes less.

i would say they can be grown outdoors in maryland but you would have to move it inside during the frost bcuz they can take a good 2 years to fruit.

they dont get huge, kinda wide like 3 feet and about a foot and a half tall. each plant grows one pineapple but the plant can continue growing and produce another fruit after the first one is harvested. they also produce a lot of offshoots which can be cut off and grown as another plant.

p.s. to rep someone you click on the scale icon in the upper right hand corner of my post, right above where it says join date.

yea 2 years then another 6 freakin months for the fruit to mature.. but yea its worth it. ive never tasted a better pineapple than the ones ive grown. 100 times better than the store bought ones.

I just started rooting a crown a few weeks ago.

I doubt I will grow it out to maturity, but i think once i pot it up, it will make for a nice looking house plant
