AP's Gardening Experiment

Hello and welcome my fellow growers to yet another enlightening thread!

It's been some time since I last created a thread, one that involves both growing plants and showcasing DIY work (if you were wondering, DIY Frankenstein's Crowns was the last one). For this go around, things will be a little different, as instead of growing beautifully frost-covered buds, I will be growing plants that will eventually bear edible fruits and vegetables, and at the same time, showcase the cunning strength of the Model-V fixtures, as well as a fellow member's organic hot soil.

Now for some photos and data!

Model-V4(1).jpg

For the first few weeks, I'll be using none other than a Heaven Bright Model-V4 lighting fixture, equipped with x2 4000K and x2 5000K Vero 18 COBS for a combined total of ~124W (dissipated).

Pro Mix.jpg

As for the top soil, PRO-MIX HP was recommended for it's ability to absorb and run through water cycles at optimal rates within an indoor environment.

Wet Soil.jpg

I decided to roll with some older, 2 GAL plastic containers, with the addition of one 2 GAL fabric container. Some of the plastic containers had some wear and tear from years past but were easily bandaged with plastic wrap.

Baker Creek Seeds.jpg

These are some heirloom seeds from Baker Creek, based out of Missouri. I tried these earlier in the year under a few of the prototypes and witnessed surprisingly remarkable results, with my utmost neglect not even being enough to finish them off! I eventually transplanted them months after springing them as seedlings from their coffin-like, sixteen ounce party cups, directly into the ground, under the sun. Yeah, it wasn't my most glorious grow, hence it's absence from records but the tomatoes and peppers turned out really tasty! (Is anyone here a fan of homemade burritos?? :hump:)

Kind Soil.jpg

As for the hot soil, I chose to go with something a little more close to home, something that reminded me of some of the hot shit that I grew with back in my beloved state of Oregon. Now this Kind Soil is like nothing that I've ever grown with before, in that it smells freshly made rather than being strangely odor-absent like a bunch of the mainstream soils. To give a better description of it, the first time I opened one of the bags and stuck my nose in, my head nearly did a 360 spin. The only thing I can compare the smell to is the horse compost/leftovers that I occasionally dump for my mother back at homebase during visits. My younger brother has actually used some of the year-long cured compost for growing potatoes, with much success and delight, so I gotta good feeling that this soil is well worth the time, effort, and cost.

I went and rubbed down nearly every surface of the grow setup with water and isopropyl 91% before laying down soil, to ensure a clean start!

Finally, I plan on uploading photos of the experiment every week, most likely on every hump day! :hump:

Yeah that would have been the way to roll if I were in a position to do so but it's cool, as @JimmyIndica and @vitamin_green_inc will be among the first few who share with the community how well these fixtures perform above cannabis.

Who knows, maybe at one of the ends I'll demonstrate how to roll a red hot, fiery pepper and paper!

Nice lights brother

I went ahead and submerged a few seeds into the prescribed 'super saiyan' soil yesterday, with expectations of visual surfacing taking place anytime between tomorrow and next Tuesday. The last go around of seeds all popped within the first week, which struck me with great surprise.

If nothing pops up over night, I won't be sticking to my weekly hump-day update routine tomorrow, as I'll be too busy assembling limited edition fixtures and moving furniture from one state to another; yay, the joys of moving from one place to another!

I doubt I'll have anything to show for ya'll tomorrow, in regards to the indoor experiment, so here's a snapshot I took earlier of the outside experiment! Woohoo, corn porn!

Last Tuesday, over a week ago, I went ahead and planted six seeds, two of them being Tomato Green Grape, another two being Pepper Red Cheese, and the last two being Pepper Maule's Red Hot.

As of today only two out of the six have emerged from the soil. Oddly enough, the two that came up to say hello are both of the Green Grape Tomato bunch; I recall the peppers being late to start in the last go about, with the peppers quickly growing after the first month.

Here's some photos!

Lastly, there will be some modifications applied to the Model-V series that will be taking place starting next week around Wednesday. I'll keep ya'll posted.

Hey guys (and possibly gals?), here's my weekly update for the tomatoes (and now peppers!):

O Come On!.JPG

Yeah, I have no fucking idea on how this shit happened. I was testing PAR levels yesterday and spotted the little infiltrator after turning pots around. Jumping beans ftw.

181...JPG

Here's a photo of a random scan for the PAR level under one of my creations. Well the value has gotta be multiplied by 5 in order to be considered PAR but even then it's not even measuring the entirety of the wavelengths being projected from the COBS (according to Apogee), so in reality it's closer to 1200~1300, which is really decent (even for it being in the middle). I'll have the correction factor for the different temperatures/colors in the coming days.

After testing PAR levels for six Vero 18's in a 3' x 1.7' tent, each powered at ~1A, with and without 90 degree angle reflectors, it's safe to say reflectors do make a remarkable impact not only under the fixture but outside of it as well. I'll have graphs to share in the coming week(s) and will most likely upload those to the All Things Vero thread.

:peace:

Between birthdays, cutting trees, and restoring apartments, I've somehow managed to neglect updating this thread. Here's some photos of new growth, plus a glimpse at my latest DIY creation
