Are solvent based concentrates dramatically over rated?

Just curious on what others think. You don't know if you don't ask, right? 10 years ago I thought solvent based concentrates were the best thing since sliced bread. I don't feel that way anymore. What happened and why did I change my mind? 10 years ago I knew a whole lot lets. I was very inexperienced in growing and processing natural solvent free extracts. I had zero experience smoking solvent free concentrates of any kind. Nobody I knew grew and nobody I knew had access to it. BHO? Jeez. That shit was everywhere. Still is. I smoked a lot of it. Even made some of my own. I stopped smoking it fairly quickly though. I mean within a few months I was officially on a BHO boycott. What I noticed when I smoked BHO is my tolerance went up instantly. I had to consume more and more BHO to get high where I wanted to be. If I tried smoking regular bud I didn't get as high as I use to. My lungs constantly hacked up thick BHO residue and left me with a lot of discomfort in my chest. The shit was just plain hard on my lungs. Another very undesirable effect I noticed was that when I got high from BHO it wasn't like being high from smoking a joint. I felt like I was tripping a little bit. The effect was much more psychoactive than smoking plain flower and I did not enjoy that at all. So I moved on to distillate cartridges. Those were okay, but most didn't get me all that high and the high didn't last very long at all. I found that I consumed the carts very quickly. And I bought the top shelf thick viscous expensive ones. Didn't matter. A gram cart was toast in 2 days max. I eventually got tired of buying hand fulls of very expensive carts that didn't really get me as high as bud and the high didn't last as long. I stopped buying distillate carts.

After growing my own for many years I now feel that the solvent based concentrates are something cool for new growers and users of cannabis, but I feel like most of the old dogs that have been around the block would take a pass. The thought that crosses my mind when I think of all the people out there that buy and consume those extracts is the pot they're buying / growing must not be very good. And judging by what's at most dispensaries these days that's not hard to believe. I just made up some dry ice hash last night from my pop corn buds and trim from the last harvest. It's so potent and smooth I can't imagine that anyone would desire something stronger. I definitely do not. Now things like hash rosin are pretty cool, but still not at all worth the money people charge for it.

Maybe I'm just turning into an old fart, but I think I will always prefer a good old fashioned bud of some sticky icky funk over some lab made extract :)

I still make and love shatter, but I mostly smoke flower. I enjoy all of the hash varieties, although I've never been exposed to much live rosin and never gotten around to making it myself. I don't care for carts, but just because people are scandalous and will added god knows what to them. A kid at my son's school got arrested for lacing them with heroin a couple of years. The only thing I don't really mess with is edibles. I either don't feel it or I'm thrown into a prolonged panic attack.

Really I just think dabbing is fun. Plus I make really good shatter. People started moving onto live resin and mining diamonds and all of that, but I've stuck to blasting and perfected the technique. I've made a big batch at least once a month for the past five years. I like making it about as much as dabbing it.

I prefer flower as well edibles and carts just aren't the same high but they are convient. No smell can hide it so I vape and smoke bud but always go with bud over vape. Also will only get vapes from medical dispensary since they have to be lab tested. For me right now a 1gram is lasting 2 months since my first harvest.

Liking it or not is just an opinion, but make no mistake where the concentrates came from --

Growing happened outdoors for the most part until the last 25 years or so. And those huge harvests have a lot of leftover leaves and trim. There wasn't a lot of use for it until concentrates became popular and dabbing became a thing.

Growers made a fortune off a product they before had to dispose of. Shops are happy to mark it up a ton and act like its special high powered medicine. It's none of that.

I think the BHO is unhealthy for lungs no matter how pure. But it is fun imo too.

I use small untrimmed buds and it always comes down to having to chose between having buds or shatter towards the end. I don't usually have much larf and all of the actual trim goes to bubble hash. People have been smoking hashish for like 2000 years. Smoking buds wasn't really popular until modern times. BHO is just hash that contains less plant matter.

I love me some hash. It's an all natural product. I understand there's a huge market for BHO. I just think there are better options. If I had to compare cannabis products to cars I'd call BHO a Camaro. Cool car, but a horrible choice for a daily driver. GM sells lot's of them. What's that say about people in general if they sell so many impractical cars that drive like dog shit in the winter and have horrible resale value? People love shiny cool looking shit and they'll spend lots of money on these shiny cool looking products even if they're a horrible value. It's not in dispute there is a huge market for BHO, so people will make it. And they should. Life's a business. Why not cash out if you've got the equipment, product, and time to make it? I'm strictly speaking from a consumer's perspective. It's a poor value for the money spent. I've seen prices in the $20-$60 range per gram. Most people in my area sell ounces of funk to their patients for $150/ounce. Flower is a buyer's market. BHO (and concentrates in general) are a seller's market. It's just the nature of the beast presently. All this typing early in the morning has me worn down. I think I'll refresh my mind with a joint of stinky sticky icky and a nice sprinkling of full melt hash mixed in while I unwind a bit from all this tension :)

Oh no you didn't just call my beloved shatter a Camaro. More like a Lambo because it's too fast for most people and they end up getting wrecked.

you mention smoking bud that gives you an upper respritory tract infection in one thread and now your talking about solventless extractions. keep a better eye on your buds when growing and stop messing with chemical extractions. get yourself a resin press and stick with that imo gogo out

Watching a muffin form is one of the most beautiful and unique things I’ve ever witnessed. I’ve recorded it every single time.

I will say that is a gorgeous looking patty of oil sir. Maybe a more accurate analogy would be a Rolls Royce. She's got style, class, elegance, and pack's a punch under the hood. But horribly impractical when it comes to value. Now if you're making and selling Rolls Royce's you're on the right end of the game :)

Jesus another person with reading comprehension issues. I think sometimes people just scan over a post without actually reading it. They pick a few words out of a 3 paragraph post and assume they understand what was said. Not only that - they then actually post an ignoramus response that clearly indicates they haven't even read the fucking thread. And if you did and still got what you got out of the conversation I sincerely hope you do not have a driver's license, but something tells me my concerns are justified. People like you are why I order everything. God forbid I have to brush shoulders with you at a walmart like the rest of the cattle. Shit, did I just say that? :)

I did not have moldy pot you putz. My neighbor did. This was clearly stated in the thread. You would know that if you actually fucking read it. Run along now big guy, and thanks for stopping by. Your amazing contributions know no bounds.

Wow... what a very nice v-oven, fuck, I want one!
Thanks. It's an amazing piece of equipment. I lucked out and got a $1000 discount. I saw the 1.9 cu ft oven listed for the price for a 0.9 cu ft oven on Amazon, so I dove all over it. Delivery was an issue, and when it finally arrived it was the 0.9 oven. So I left a negative review about the mislabeling and planned on returning it because it was too small. Across International immediately sent me a message saying they would swap it for a 1.9 oven if I changed my review. Reshipping / delivery it was a major ordeal, and when the bigger one arrived it was in a giant crate like in a video game loot box.

The downside is I've outgrown it and would like to upgrade to at least a 3.2 cu ft oven, but they are around 5K and unless I go commercial I can't really justify spending the money.
