truffles are a type of fungus growth mushrooms have this stage when presented with unbenifical weather conditions its a solid mass of fungal growth only a few species of magic mushroms are hearty enough well actually only a few species have found to be hearty enough to produce a truffle since these arent actually mushrooms they can be sold as gormet food because actual edible truffles are considered a delicacy this is where the truffle pig came from

The name is sclorotia, several types of magic mushrooms produce them including atlantis and Mexicana. I had a strain of cubensis that worked this sort of magic. They are not as potent as the mushroom fruit itself but they are only about 70 percent water as opposed to 92 percent water in a fruiting body. So you do the math - weaker, but when dried it is heavier. The active ingredient is exactly the same as the other mushroom.

I have tried them on 2 occations, there was once a time you could buy all kinds of mushrooms and truffles in the head shops in dublin. We got the psilocybe tampanensis, there were not as trippy as the thai cubes or mexi cubes but were still good none the less, at the time i think it was 15euro for 20 grams fresh.
There were quite rough to eat too, made your mouth water like crazy.

I had some in the Dam, and they were the consistency of macadamia nuts with a slight nutty taste as well. I have Mexicana A. and Tampanensis going ATM, and plan on harvesting @ 6 months (April 10th 2012 
) AFAIK, the slower, lower temp grown sclerotia are better than the quick grown incubated ones, but I have no personal comparison on that.
They're not really the mind blowing experience like eating 5 grams of cubes, but they are a bit more of a sociable trip, meaning you can keep it together around others that aren't tripping.
Things are painted in broader strokes IMO. Instead of the kaleidascope type color patterns on cubes, it's more waves of soft color, and very much a more thought provoking trip.
That being said, if things aren't settled in your life, this can be a bad thing causing you to dwell on the bad rather than enjoying a nice ride, so as always, just make sure you're in good spirits before you dose.
Also, once sclerotia are harvested, the colonised grain can then be cased and you will get actual mushrooms off of them, but it's a bit trickier than growing cubes, so most people just stop at the sclerotia.
