Okay i have a question was wondering if there is a cost effective way to run some kinda of a battery back up . for a dyi aero grow system. Here is what i have for usage of power

3 Water pumps at 30 wts each.
4 air pumps at 2.5 wts each
CFLs totalling 618 wts usage

so i would need to power

3x30=90
4x2.5=10
618

for a total of 718 wts.

I have avabile to me about 10 Golf Cart battiers and was wondering is there a way to set up a inverter to charge the batteries and a way to have them kick in auto on a lost of power .

Had a power loss for 2days one time and well my aero system surived but i lost a cpl the young ones because they didnt like the lost of power running.

Thanks for any ideas you might have

I am not an electrician so I cannot tell you about battery usage but depending on what you can spend and are willing to spend there are automatic switches for generators and backup power supplies that sense power loss and then in some set number of seconds after the power goes out they switch to the backup system. One of that type might work for you .. possibly .. depending on what you end up relying on for emergency power anyway.

Yea basically what he said. I know the theory but can't tell you what you need exactly. The concept is a normally closed relay between your inverter and live power source. When the live power is on the relay is disconnected from the batteries, when the power goes off it switches over. Of course with a mechanical relay you're going to have a brief loss in power so you'll need a capacitor or something to deal with the ripple.

The DIY option would be to modify a UPS to use bigger batteries.
