Best grower, worst shower?

I have now a "grand" total of two grows from seed under my belt, and it seems to me that the plants that grow the most aggressively and produce the biggest nugs are often the weakest from a getting high perspective.

When growing from seed it seems to be normal to bin the runts and bud out the strongest growing plants, but if the plants with the best growth also tend towards being the weaker plants drug wise, perhaps this is not actually the best choice?

While this might be your experience it’s not really true. Each plant you grow from seed will have slightly different traits even amongst the same strain. I do agree that in general some of the strains seed vendors like to push as being “high yielding” tend to be very leafy and therefore less potent as strains with smaller/denser bud structures. Strains like big bud come to mind. There are strains that straddle across these traits (i.e. critical sensi-star) but any strain can be made to yield out if given time and training.
I bet if you take the extra time to properly train out clones taken from the same strains you currently have they would yield better. No such thing as a “runt”; some plants just need more time and care to grow healthy. In a perfect world all cannabis plants can potentially yield several pounds if you had the space, time, and patience to let them. The plants that seem to be the most needy may end up being the most special. When you find one that’s a cut you’ll want to keep growing; clone the hell out of her....

A seedling can be "born" with one half of a cotyledon, or disfigured leaf sets, or a number of other anomalies ... some are just genetically inferior. Like people and animals, plants also don't all grow perfectly. Even under the best conditions.
Though I have to disagree with Richard Drysift re: runts, his advice is good re: cloning the ones you like.
Or find a different strain if your current ones don't produce to your liking. Or a different seed provider.

Grow a healthy plant until it goes full amber and cannibalizes it's self. Size doesn't matter from my grows. Maturity does.
