Best Soil Mix For UK Based Grower ???

Depends what nutrients you are using.
First of all I was using standard multipurpose then a higher quality multipurpose then I was using bio bizz all mix, then I switched to gold label special mix and found it much better. Now I am switching to house and garden light mix and I think that is where I will stay. I am kinda half way on the switch to light mix. I might stick with the special mix and just use extra perlite.
Really its your call. You can make your own, you can buy it or you can get some dirt and add stuff to it.
Things to bear in mind :
PH of the soil - wants to be a similar figure to the Ideal PH of the nutrients you are using.
EC of the soil - the nutrient content of the soil - more nutrients in soil means you feed less but have less control. I find that it has better flavour if you use nutrient rich soil - but I am looking to switch to a lighter mix due to lack of control with such a heavy EC soil.
Aeration of soil - How much air it holds, The more air it holds the more you have to water and the better it will drain.
Water carrying capacity of soil - too much water and not enough air has been the bain of my efforts so far and its something that I now take much more seriously prefering lighter faster draining soil over others.

If you wanted me to say use this I would say use all mix if your doing organics but add lime and perlite to it.
If your using mineral nutrients like me then gold label special mix with extra perlite is doing me wonders but it takes a lot of tweeking to get it to work with nutrients in the first 2-6 weeks.
If you want total control and the ability to flush go with a light mix, I recommend house and garden light mix. (if you are a new grower then you can easily flush).

i use either all mix or westland compost that feeds for four months its great

all mix u can get at hydroponics shops and as for westlands u can get it from any band q wilkinson places like that..if you want proof of how good it is nip over to my thread the proof on that..doggies nuts on the general forum mate\
Track down your local hydro shop, trust me everywhere has one. I thought there was no way that my lil town would have one and after doing some nosing I found two. Now I have a very good relationship with the store owners I can get anything I want ordered in and they are very knowledgeable.
