Breeding for authentic sativa happiness. Mextiza, Thai, Angola, Senegal...

Hi
I'm involved in a breeding project whose main goal is to keep Mextiza alive and healthy. Mextiza is an old hybrid Cannabiogen used to sell. It is made with Oaxaca '79 and Nepal Jam and although it has got some hybridization (it is probably NOT a pure sativa), the effect is so sativish (energetic and happy - optimistic high) and the maturation is so fast that I feel in the need of preserving it for the future.

Since the Oaxaca '79 has been kept miraculously by mean of successive S1s, the resulting hybrid Cannabiogen sold was extremely endogamic. It is like a jewel from the past: smell, taste and effect are fucking awesome, but you can't just keep making F2, F3, F4 because they won't sprout. I believe this is the reason they discontinued this strain even with that much demand it had.

So, in order to keep its main characteristics, I'm working with seeds, cuts and everything people involved sent me. A good friend of mine sent me a couple of very special cuts that are famous in Spain for its sativa effect, so I've crossed Mextiza with them as well.

The most successful step I believe I made was to use an old special Jack Herer cut I had. It didn't add much character to the cross, since Mextiza is very dominant, but after crossing back a selected hybrid (Jack Mextiza) with a Mextiza male I got a very high germ rate. I'm growing these seeds at the moment, I call them Mextiza Rebuild since it is just one step in the direction I want.

These are the ones growing in the trays in the middle of the picture. They are about 45, and this one is a test grow. I want to see if these plants are as I expect and suitable for the next breeding step.

I know this picture isn't especially impressive, but this is just the first post in a long series of posts. I'll upload more pictures with the different steps and crosses I perform, during the next months.

Cheers

These are Senegal, a strain worked by the legendary Spanish breeder Alex La Mano Negra (lmn) who died ten years ago. It is based on Senegal genetics but we believe that he could have hybridized them in some step. I made a selection between a bunch of plants and I kept the stronger, the most resinous to keep working. In general they have a very slender and nice shape, need about 12-14 weeks and are very sativa in effect. Of course, I crossed her with my Mextiza.

This is a plant with just 3 weeks at 12/12. Flowering starts explosively! I've been feeding too much nitro, I believe this causes this claw-looking leaves and extremely dark color. Otherwise they look good.

And this is a female I pollinated near 6 weeks ago. She was outdoors and started flowering in late August, but I moved her indoors. No way she could finish here! Buds are resinous and smell is floral, tar, hash. Very nice and very gentle. I'll cut her in a couple of weeks, if I am patient enough. Seeds are ready, and they are very very big.

I've been picking seeds out of the plant. I can compare the siblings of two different sativa keepers. Both have been crossed with Mextiza. The little seeds in the left come from La Bella (a cut named after Mario Bellandi, the Delicatessen Seeds breeder) and the ones in the right come from the Senegal from La Mano Negra (lmn), and are extremely big.

Salud, Ailalelo!

Salud!

Hola tio! Me alegro de verte yo tb. I'm going to answer in English just in case there are more people interested. I think that there is no way you can develop a 8 weeks strain like Oaxaca '79 based entirely on Mexican landraces, they take more than 12 weeks and they don't produce as much resin. Probably there was some hybridization in the 70s and after some years of selection they developed a weed with the Mexican flavor and most of its effect, but much faster. There isn't any landrace with that much resin in the leaves, real sativas only have trichomes in the calyxes and not in the leaves like hash-making strains.

I use fermentation in landraces because it is a good way to speed curing up. It is also stronger because of pressure: you can put more herb in the same joint.

Cheers

There is a lot of info in Mextiza, if you look for it. Fast and tasty sativa, strong, energetic and uplifting. Taste is lime-honey, very characteristic.

This is the one I pressed. It weighted 41.8 grams and now it just weights 18.3 grams, so it is near dry. In a couple of days, if it doesn't change its weight, I'll consider it cured and dry and I'll put it on storage for a month. After that... it will be fire.

Some more pictures. This is one of the Senegal after 6 weeks flowering. They look better now that I've reduced feeding, and they show an incredible amount of glands everywhere.

And this one is the seeded Senegal Angola. 5 weeks have passed since pollination, and I will harvest this one in a week to be sure that all of them are mature. Looks like I'll have a lot of seeds.
