so H series samsungs or the bridgelux i guess, both are pretty similar in price. so many to pick from though im struggling to pick the right ones lol. do you have codes for them?

is this the one to go for? https://www.digikey.com.au/product-detail/en/samsung-semiconductor-inc/SI-B8U521B20WW/1510-2226-ND/6624010. They seem pretty expensive but im guessing i'd need less of them?
If you run the Samsungs hard you'll definitely need fewer of them. I see the Samsungs on the Digikey AU site at AU$34.74, and the Bridgelux BXEB-L1120Z-40E4000-C-A3 at AU$19.25. Someone, somewhere on RIU penciled out the operational cost over time and the higher efficiency of the F-series would pay for the difference in something like 18 months, depending, of course, on your cost per kilowatt. Prices *may* have changed since then which would obviously affect the payoff time, but in the end, it's a personal choice.

Ok cheers honestly would prefer lower upfront cost lol. So might just go with the bridgelux. I've been lurking your thread i really like the look of your build :)

If you get Samsung strips you don't need fewer, you still need the same amount to cover your grow area but simply need to run them slightly softer to get the same output as the EB's run a tiny bit hotter. If you have a 4'x4' space then go with 12 x 1120mm EB strips run at 1050ma or 50w per strip. Gives you 600w in your space which is perfect especially considering it's actually a 5'x5'. One strip every 4 inches and you're good to go. 6 EB strips run at 50w each on an HLG-320H-C1050 driver. So 2 drivers and 12 strips and you're all set other than your frame, wire, wago's etc.
Could even offset your strips to cover your entire tent kinda like this.

Awesome thanks for the advice and I love the idea of offsetting like that should help get good coverage. So I'll be able to just use standard wagos on the eb connectors?
Also forgot one thing, im only growing autos with these, i should be fine just going with all 3500k?

I notice it says voltage 152-305v that's fine with the EBs?
Edit: all good just found the voltage of the 1120mm is 44.4 so 6 each driver is plenty of room.

The EB's have their own connectors on the strips, the wago's are for connecting the wires to your driver. The driver you linked is a B version so it has separate wires to use with a potentiometer. If you get the A version of that driver the dimming is built into the driver by way of a small dial you turn with a screwdriver and it dims from 50% to 100%. My next build is a flowering tent and I am mounting the drivers outside the tent because they are pretty heavy and add a bit of extra heat but since the lights will almost always be set at the same level (close to max) I have no need for hooking up a potentiometer. Can't go wrong with 3500K.

Sounds good thanks man I'll go with the A driver should make dimming pretty easy no need to stuff around. Gonna put an order in can't wait to get building!

Yeah im pretty sure I will, or another 12 lol down the track anyway. Might just keep the hps in there for now if i can manage to fit everything in together lol

I got most of my stuff now. Almost ready to put things together. Super busy with work at the moment but I will find time in the next week or two I'm sure.
Here's a pic of the 12 EB's, 3 Drivers, 6 cobs, 6 SST120 pin sinks, 2 flower initiator pucks (1 more coming in the mail) and a pile of 1" square 1/16th thick aluminum tubing that's been cut to size.

And here's most of the parts roughly laid out. 300w of 1750K Vero 29 and 600w of 3000/4000K Bridgelux EB's and 3 Growmau5 Initiator pucks. I also picked up a tabletop 10" Ryobi Drill press for working on the frame.

They are a little more cost effective - 10 of the 4 footers are $307 - 25 of the 2 footers are $269

can anyone help me out with the maths to figure out my PPFD and watts per square foot doing this? and optimal spacing to mount 6 each per board?

@Randomblame can you help me out i see you had some nice maths earlier in the thread regarding this. i dont have a par meter yet but i have a lux meter on my phone i can use if that helps work out what i need to know.

Just off the top of my stoned head, if it were me and I was going to run the HPS and use the EB's as side lighting I would put 4 strips on each of the side and back walls of the tent and do true side lighting, leave the whole canopy exposed to your HPS. Either way you slice it you'll have a ton of light in your tent...hope you have good air temp control.

Righto, my new build is in progress, have purchased 8 x 3k 560mm strips and 8 x 4k strips for a 4ft x 1.5ft drobe...

Would the ELG series drivers be a good fit? Now I know the price is lower on these compared to HLG series... but whats the catch?

And can I just double triple check that its ok running 8 x 560mm strips on 1 x ELG 200 C1050B? https://www.arrow.com/en/products/elg-200-c1050b/mean-well-enterprises OR is it ok to just run 6 x Strips per driver then add another 2 later? Or would the drivers be too much for only 6 strips?

More info is required to do the math.
- Which strips do you want you use, there are EB-Series from Bridgelux(159lm/w 3000°k) and more efficient Samsung H- and F-Series strips(179lm/w or 168lm/w)?
- And which length, they are available in 1', 2' and 4' ft.?
- How hard you want to drive them? How many extra light you want?So which driver?

Hanging the HPS higher and adding LED strips will probably not bring much.
Adding 4'ft. strips as side light on all 4 sides, as Danielson999 mentioned above, would probably benefit you more!
Mount them horizontally between the tent poles and drive them @700mA with only a metal sheet or no heatsinks. This way you get a lot of "under canopy light".

i have 12 of the
BXEB-L1120Z-35E4000-C-A3

and 2 x HLG-320H-C1050A

was going to run them at 1050ma for 50w each. if i did 6 each board my idea was to have big air cooled hood in the middle, and then 1 board on each side angled, like so.



wouldn't this give me more options if i make 2 boards i can move them around and stuff, if i mount to the tent frame itself like suggested with 4 strips each side is that going to do much since the tent is actually 5x5, wouldn't they be too far away to be useful? (also how far between each would i need to do? i guess i could just start with 4 each side and expand to maybe 6 or 8 each side down the track. however that being said i dont plan on using the tent forever i want to expand into using the entire room at some point without the tent)

i mean it would prob be a ton easier to just mount them to the frame of the tent so im open to doing that if its going to be still good light coverage with the HPS in there.

was hoping to get some maths to figure it out, i guess im gonna have to get a proper par meter for the long run lol.

If you want to switch to a larger area anyway, I would forget the sidelight between the tent poles.

But as you have drawn, you focus too much light in the middle. This gives a hotspot and you will get problems with bleaching.
It would be better to align the additional light horizontally and try to make the sides as bright as the center. If necessary dimm the HPS something down, but not hang it higher than neccessary.

12 4ft. EB-Series strips @1050mA(48vf) = ~605w net/645w total
159lm/w @700mA, assuming LER for 3500°k is 320-330lm/w, effiency is ~48%
@1050mA effiecy is lower probably 3%, so 45%.
605w x 0,45% = ~270PAR/w
Assuming again these LED's have a similar QER as the Vero Series(same phosphors?) we can use a value between 4,65 and 4,8μMol/j, so 270PAR/w x 4,7μMol =1270μMol/s PPF.
Your 5' x 5' should be ~1,5m x 1,5m, so ~2,25m²
1270μMol/s : 2,25m² = 564μMol/s/2,25m²
But there is always a wall loss of 10-20%, so I would say you will get ~500μMol/s of additional light from these strips.
My goal would be to use the strips to get an even PAR map from corner to corner with no hotspot in the middle.
