Broken tap root. Grow journal!

Ok here it goes.

So I am doing my first grow using Aerogarden 6 Elite, which has the 3 bulbs as shown in picture. Picked this baby off kijiji for $50; thought it was a decent deal to get me going.
I am growing a Autoflowering Fem Lemon Skunk; germinated before placing into the pod. I used the wet papertowel method in a sealed blown up ziploc bag.
In addition to the Aerogarden lights, I got 3x 26W 6500k CFL Bulbs. I think I might switch to 2700k during flowering stage.
Anyways, so this is what I got going for my grow

  • My thermometer providing me with temp and humidity
  • GH Maxi Grow 2.2lbs powder (still on its way)
  • GH Maxi Bloom 2.2lbs powder (still on its way)
  • Air pump
  • Air stone
  • Fan
  • Emergency blanket for reflecting
I am hoping the nutrients come by the time my plant needs it. As I just placed my order last night, I'm thinking it may come monday hopefully which is cutting it close.

I started germination on the 5th, she popped open by the evening of the 6th. Unfortunately she germinated in a complicated way and I had not known how to plant it as the root wrapped itself around the seed. Trying to figure things out, I snapped the tap root in half. I threw it in the garbage, decided to check it out in the morning and she looked pretty solid by morning so decided to give it a shot.

Whether or not my seed will survive having a broken tap root, I am not sure. Though I have heard of one growing a autoflowering plant fully with great yield having encountered the same tap root problem as me early into the grow.

Here are some pictures I got of my setup, not the greatest pictures but just to give you an idea of what's going on. Any feedback at all is appreciate.

PS: I don't have ppm or pH meter. Let's hope it'll be ok without it.

Just a quick update today. Plant did not show much improvement overnight. Got new airpump as the other one stopped functioning over night.

It's been just under 6 days since I've planted the seed. I'm thinking she's growing slowly as her tap root was broken. Should I give her nutes yet? I got a 1 lil aerogarden tablet mixed right now. My actual nutrients used for the grow have just been shipped today unfortunately. Should arrive next week.

I just noticed slight drooping on one of my plants leafs, what does that mean? She asking for some nutes?

You might try putting a bit of the nutrient solution in but doing a lot could harm the plant more. It may not have any nutrients left in the larger leaves to power the roots and get the whole thing going.

I added a tablet from the beginner aerogarden pack (one you use for seedlings that has two tablets, I only used one). We'll see how that goes.

Todays update: Added nutes yesterday. Plant seems to be responding well to the addition of the nutrients.

I've also bought some black electrical tape to seal off any light coming in. All seems to be going well!

Note in the picture that I did some trimming around the actual plant, removing some of the plastic from the pod. I found that it wasn't getting some light being stuck under there, I think it's affecting the grow now in a positive way.

Miroqt: All the more reason to plant the seed where you want it to grow. I learned this lesson the hard way as I fear you will.

I think I may start germinating my seeds in the pods provided with the aerogarden. One problem however I have with this is not knowing what end the taproot is actually coming out of in the first place.

Anyway guys, though there is not much interest in the thread, I will continue posting pictures daily for documenting purposes I guess. Would appreciate any feedback anyway.

I had issues with the tap root on 1 of 2 of seeds. The broken tap root lady is now fully caught up(4thweek). Your lady seems just fine actually, i mean this is my first grow so my experience is just this one issue i had, but with mine the seed with the broken tap root had 2 small leaves while the other already had 4 big leaves. Check out my journal in sig

Miroqt: I guess that's what they mean when they say never say never. If you position the seed correctly in your planting medium you'll seldom have that problem. I've found the easiest way to do it is to handle them with big tweezers and plant them, pointy end down, twice as deep as they are tall. Although it can happen to anyone under the best of conditions. I had one recently that sprouted upside down and when I tried to reposition her she broke but your chances are a lot less if you plant them where you want them to grow.

Can someone please take a look at the picture and tell me what's going on with my plant. I'm a lil worried that there might be some rotting taking place? On the left leaf there are yellowish marks coming in it looks like, and the tip of the plant is showing some darkerish characteristics, is she rotting?

no one seemed to be interested at the time so I didn't update for a while. Here is an update for those that are interested. Also, my plant is now 30 days old and I believe it to be smaller then your normal plant; am I wrong? It's a auto lemon skunk.

howdie. i am interested. lol. i am wrapping up some auto's atm. they are il diavolo by delicious seeds. i've been around closet grows for the past few years. i would say you are just alright for 30 day. there doesn;t seem to be a lot of straight forward info in regards to these new autoflower strains. mine stopped growing upwards at about 1.5 ft and began fruiting. not being able to test for ph can be a bummer. i was in the same boat, and recently ordered a tester because of it. from what i have read, correct pH can produce much larger yields. good luck, and feel free to ask any ?'s. i plan on doing a few rotations of autos over the next few months.
