im about to start my 1st hydro grow, just wondering what size buckets are best? they have 3 gallon buckets at my local hydro shop. but im wondering if i should go with the 5 gallon style?

are there advantages and disadvantages to each? or is one clearly better?

Hey buddy whats up?
Ya 5 gallons are nice but I would only use it if I know I'm going to grow 8' tall plant other than that I think you will be happy more with a bubbleponics set up like the roseman.

just get like a 20 gallon tote and make that into a dwc and use it to grow 8 decent sized plants

i dont know what that mean?

i have a 4x2 grow space. and 5 gallon buckets are 12 inches in diameter. that means i can only barley fit 8 bubble buckets. the thing is, im trying to grow 12 plants.

Ok I see whats up man. You want 12 plants well I have an idea but I need to know exatly how tall the plants can get in grow grow space so, how tall is your closet, 7', 8' 9'?

okay so i just did the measurements.

my closet is 8 ft but my lamp hangs down where the base is at 5 1/2 ft. so my plants have 5.5 ft before they hit the light. the hydro buckets are pretty much a foot. so my plants have to be bushy, like 3 ft.

i was thinking about doing hydro in one of those 16 gallon black rectangle plastic tubs. should i look more into this option?

I would look into it yes.
But I would need to know more about this bucket your talking about.
Here is my idea for you.
Lets say the bucket is very larg like 4' long and 18'' tall and mabye 2' wide you could put a plant every 8" on the lid and get your 12 plants.

Here what Im talking about:
_________
P P P P P P

P P P P P P
_________

Every "P" stand for your plant and the boarders of the drawing is the edge of your bucket.

From here you wpuld just need to make it and install aire stones every foot in the tub/bucket for a total of 4 air stones.
This is what I can suddgest but for that many plants but if I were you I wouldnt go this route for several reason.

1. Its to damn big...lol
2. THats alot of water in that tub so that means replacing the water every weekish will be a bitch.
3. You will need alot of nutes to keep this setup going. $$$
4. If you would need to move it (good luck) if I remember right 1 gallon is 8 pounds (do the math, its heavy)
5. most tubs that size are not ment to hold that much water and in time will buckel under all that pressure, floding your closet.

The list goes on and on. I just dont sudgest this way of doing it.

The other ides I had it a diy dwc 5gallon bucket like Roseman is doing right now in his grow op. He i going to have 3 plant in one bucket and this would be good for you because you would only need 4 buckets (5 gallon buckets that is), or even 2 plants a bucket if you wanted.

This way you can let each plant grow about 2ish feet tall before flowering them. Then they have plent room to get big, mabye 4ish feet tall (thats big for a person growing for peronal use):weed:

Ok its late where Im at so read this and let me know. I will keep helping you the best I can.

Remember,

you're going to have to exchange the water in your res every week, and i'm suspecting that in a closet, your nearest drain is in a shower tub, so the buckets are probably a good idea for portability.

If you want to do a sog op, you can do three clones per bucket, 4 if you have a lot of light.

if the plants are gonna be closer to three feet tall,

they will drink themselves dry in a 3 gallon bucket before a week is up. but 5 gallons is much more of a pain in the ass to move than three.

esp when mixing in nutes and stuff.

... go with the three gallons if you plan on being around a lot, or want to get a mother going and then take cuttings, which you don't want to do...

i'd do 5 gallon buckets, a plant per, and don't top or fim them, grow out eight nice top colas,

as the post above said flower them when they are mature, and have their square foot of space filled up, which will be around two feet tall.

good luck

Okay i think i got what im going to go with.
im going to switch to a different closet with more room. (like a foot extra length wise) its 2' x 54". i looked at some frosted clear trash cans at home depot today. they are about 3 gallon each. they are 7.5 x 11.5 so ill get the 12 plants in there in rows of 2, like robot said.

since they are clearish im going to wrap them in mylar to keep out light.

im getting a single air pump thats supposed to be legit for about $70 at the hydro shop, it has 6 connections for air, and im going to put a splitter on each one to make it 12.

altho i could of fit the 12 plants in my smaller 2'x 48" closet, the bigger one is just in a more convenient place when thinking about where im going to have my ventellation ducting going to.

im going to buy 12 of those 5 gallon bucket lids with the net pots built in, and cut them to size if needed and just let them sit on top of the cans. this should be cool right? i mean the lid dosent nessisarily have to sap on tightly right? just as long as it blocks the light

no does not have to snap just block light.

Please make a jurnal on here (with pics) and let me know when you do so i can help more.

Make sure there is NO LIGHT going into that bucket. other wise you will get alge and you roots will rot. Roots hate light wilth a passion!

Love to help ya out lil buddy.

ummmm no it doesnt. the plant wont move it, like when it get hits with a fan.

I suggest doing the lids youself though.

Get a 2'' hole drill bit at home depot, whatever the size of your net cups for less than 20, and the lids about a buck each. That will probably save you money... oh ans the net pots.

you don't need those huge net pot lids or whatever,

as in dwc you don't need a medium. clone into the cup, with a neoprene lid to hold the clone or seedling ( I prefer to use my hole drill bit to cut out stronger styrofoam lids )

To get from seed to water culture, I used rapid rooters, and when the roots started to poke out of the pod i broke most of the dirt away from the roots and stuck it in the bucket.

Sorry to hear about your computer big guy.

Planing ahead, great thing to do, its all about 5 things preparation, research, location, money, and a plan of attack.
Do these things and you cant go wrong.

Its ok about the lurnal. It would be nice and easier to help that way but you gotta do what you gotta do, ya know.

Its also good to hear your in school (stick with it) and remember "Study high, take the test high, get high scores" -movie "How high"

Good Luck, and keep in touch.

fasho.

what it is basically is that im trying to use some of my grant money for hydroponics. (about $500)

but i havent got that check in the mail yet.. and i have some complications with that whole thing.

i think that growing marijuana and selling it legally to dispensaries is a good way to earn extra income.
would you agree?

yes im inversting $500 into marijuana growing but i should make more than that after only 1 grow, so i think its okay.
besides that its a sweet hobby.
