Bud grower / Shroom newbie.. Help!

Im a grower by nature. Been growing hydro buds since the 80s. I'm a Deadhead and recently (last 5 years) tried shrooms again and love them. I also would like to help an addict with shrooms like I help patients who need MMJ relief.

Anyway, I read a lot at Shroomery, but it's over my head and you really can't ask those scientists over there without getting your head ripped off, lol. I want to grow a bunch of shrooms, but of course, I have no idea where to begin. Here are my questions:

What's a good kit or tech for the first timer? I'm looking at Midwest Grow Kits (Mega Mushroom Growing and Incubator Kit) and the one in High Times (Homestead). I want something fairly easy and that has a good success rate.

Ok, if I have a kit I can deal with, what about spores? Where is the best place to buy them? I assume that I need syringe type or something.

AND, over at Shroomery they say " a cube is a cube". But when I get shrooms (mostly at festivals), the only ones that seem to be good are the thin, long stemmed variety that have a bluish tinge. I've bought fatter looking shrooms with names like Golden Teacher and they were bunk. Anyone know what I mean? Those are the shrooms I want to grow.

Well, RIU has been super helpful with my latest cob led conversion and I'm hoping the kind folks here can help a newbie out

IMHO it would be easier to do it yourself...but, midwest grow kit aint bad. I would just get the $28 pressure cooker. Cleaning supplies. 2 $7 tote boxes (28 qt?). 12 pint size mason jars (wide mouth). Wild bird seed or popcorn. And buy either B+, golden teacher, Treasure Coast, or Ecuadorian spores. Just to start. You can then take time to read and decide where you want to go.

To get started you need the jars that were mentioned, the pressure cooker, wild bird seed (better than popcorn in my experience), polly fill, aluminum foil and spores. You will have a couple weeks after knocking your jars up to get the containers and shit.

Soak bird seed over night. I remove all the floaters too.

Boil bird seed for a half hour, don't count time till its boiling

Strain it and let all the water get out of it.

Load your jars up with the seeds, squeeze it to make sure it dont drip before putting it in the jars.

Punch a hole in the lid and stuff with polly fill. This is where your going to inject 2cc of your spores.

Close jar with the polly filled lid and cover the lid in aluminum foil.

Put wash rag in bottom of the pressure, put the jars in the cooker, fill half way with water and pressure cook for an hour.

Dont walk away while that cooker is going cuz you want to make sure it dont run out of water or have water squirting out cuz you used to much water!

Let it sit till its room temp. I pressure cook at night so I can just let it sit over night to cool instead of standing impatiently over it waiting on it to cool

Take the foil off. Put your syringe togeather. Burn the needle in fire, wipe with alcohol and make sure its not hot any more. Inject 2cc into jar, try to run it close to the side so you see formation of mycelium faster.

your going to be looking at these jars like 10 times a day just like you did the first time you grew weed so might as well make it so you can see it faster so you can finally relax and chill.

Put your jars on a shelf somewhere and start reading up on bulk tek.

Just like when growing weed, spend the money to get the right shit or your just wasting your time.

Everything I needed when said and done was about $140 with out the cooker. Make sure you get the pressure cooker

This "hobby" is a worth while investment. I have 2 pressure cookers purchased over a 4 year span cause of it. The 28 buck one, then the big ass one with the guage. I can still use em for years. Plus the extra science type stuff. You will enjoy it for sure.

Yew, I'm all, good with spending some cash on this. I just want it to work. I might start with a Midwest kit, just to get some understanding of the process, etc.
Can anyone comment on the type of shroom I'm looking to grow, and the best place to buy the spores?

Buy a bunch, if u buy all the materials your self instead of a kit, you will have enough supplys to grow a bunch of times

Everything is on the way. I used Spores101. Anyone have any tips, suggestions to make this first try successful? Can anyone comment on my spore selections or make recommendations? As I said, the only shrooms that we have liked were thin stemmed, rounded tops, never had a "name", etc. The two I chose seem like what I'm looking for.

Thanks RIU!

Shroomery has been taking heat for promoting a vendor (forget the name but they are only promoting one) as their vendor of choice, while said vendor takes your money and is uncontactable. It's been alleged that one of the staff is emotionally unstable, and bans on whims. You need to be invested to benefit from the site, spore trading opens up after 3 months I hear. I never have had an account there.

I don't recommend shroomery for anything but reading. If you'd like to purchase spores, look at this subreddit and find a vendor with something you like. I recommend mushroomman666.
