calcium hypocholorite

I used to live very close to the boarder growing up :). From age 19-21 I spent 1-2 nights a week in a club on Clifton Hill dancing and trying to meet girls. I had lots of fun dancing, but never met any decent girls.
I never danced hardly ever but was known to be a bit of a man whore but I have retired...well maybe.

i bought mine off ebay for about 30 bucks. i would go with precision if it were me. my dose for 20 gallons was only 0.60 grams which is about a few shakes of a salt shaker. it's a tiny amount because of it's concentration of chlorine.

So you do .6 grams for 20 gal which gets 3 ppm? And you use this in a clean res to keep it clean i imagine? Now what if a guy has the brown sludge (not much yet) and wants to attack it? Can i go stronger... up to 5ppms or so?

Or does this only work for maintenance?

5ppms is safe for humans and plants.

i dosed once/week and did a res change weekly.

if you have sludge, i think you'd be safe doing 2 doses at 3ppm per week.

as you get used to using it, you'll notice your smell will get less and less like a pool as the week goes on and it will go quicker if the chlorine is attacking any nasty stuff.

Chlorine will usually dissipate in 3-4 days max, so dosing twice a week is no big deal, especially if you are cleaning up your system. In flood and drain trays with a high level of water aeration I don't notice any chlorine smell after the first day, and even when I freshly dose the res it's very faint. We are talking about a really small amount of chlorine here.

Thanks for the help.

Pretty sure you can get it at most of the local stores that carry pool/hot tub stuff.
I found 1 Kg of Aquarius brand 70% calcium hypoclorite at Canadian Tire I think.
1.4g per 1L for stock solution.
Add 1mill/liter for 1ppm, 2ml/L for 2ppm etc. That is if my math is correct.LOL

When mixing a fresh res of nutes.... when should i add the calcium hypo? First, before nutes? Or last?

I always add it last after everything else is correct. I don't know if it really makes a difference though. Adding in extra doses not at the res change never seems to impact ph or anything.

You can just add it to your new res water and circulate for a bit if you are battling something. Then add you nutes. I have read that the chlorine will react with the salts quick.

i weighed it out per dosing.

need a pretty accurate scale: to 0.01grams

0.10 grams per 10 gallons is 1ppm free chlorine
i ran at 3ppm ( 0.30g/10gal)
Don't you have to add nearly twice as much since the HTH is only 62% CalHypo??

No, that math is right btw.
1g into a gallon of RO@ 58% Cal-Hypo seems to make a 150-200ppm stock solution for me.
Clear Res and UC Roots are both around .028 (or so) of HClO which is around 280ppms.
I found this stuff called Pure and Clean HClO. Double strength as compared UC and Clear Rez (.048) but around the same price.
