Can you help an old head be more up to date? Are my plans achievable?

I'm really enjoying the light debate - but maybe this part of the convo should move itself to the "eternal light debate" thread.

Here's what I see the OP asking.

So far I can answer Yes, except humidity in a bathroom.

I'm a complete noob - my "Yes" is not to be trusted. Could someone with experience address the OP's questions?
true. sorry OP i def went off on a tangent there... you could grow in a bathroom sure but i wouldnt go in there and take hot showers during flower haha

Just my opinion but ive used both. My plants veged faster under my 1000w mh/hps lights but the heat they put out was an issue and also my electric bill. I switched to led for that reason. I have to veg about a week longer than the mh/hps light to get the same size but my temps are way easier to control and my 3 led lights pull about 1300w total compared to my 2 1000w hps lights. I get just as much light intensity and coverage with the led’s

Haha thanks everyone!
I kept checking for days on this thread and it said it hadn't posted, then i get back a week later and here we are on page 3!
I grew under a 600w hid light in 09, and it went well. The issue is i have less space, and need to reduce heat and try to max watt to bud ratios.

I'll do some research on leds and run you past them, thanks everyone, i will be back soon i hope.
Also, im in the uk so im not sure if that will effect my light choice much?

im sorry did the LED crowd figure out their incomplete spectrum yet? Lol

The companies are bleeding you of your money one nanometer at a time
HPS doesn’t provide the perfect spectrum, either, so I’m not sure why you think that’s a counterpoint against LED. I’d be willing to bet that a mixture of LED and HPS would probably be better than just HPS or just LED.

As has already been established by the LED fanboys here on RIU I do not know how to grow and only LED is suitable for growing. And I only ever used cheap knock off LED lights. I’ll leave this topic to the experts lol:bigjoint:

You come off like a butthurt anti LED person. Nobody said you can't grow, and nobody said only LED is suitable for growing. Those who run LED know that HPS has great results. You are the only one in here that is completely shitting all over one of the lighting options. LED grows have different temperature requirements than HPS grows so perhaps that was part of your problem?

The way it works on here is if you miss an update it stops notifying you until you catch up and then it starts again.
Its weird.. :bigjoint:

Good leds are good leds, it can make price a bit different in uk but there are some good sellers like diyleduk and for full DIY it doesn't affect you apart from sourcing heat sinks are a bit more tricky than for our US cousins.

Lumatek make great plug and play LEDs and are new to the LED market, unfortunately wouldn't lend well to the shape of your space. But there are lots of options for oblong grow spaces too.

@mystery?

Post your run in the Grow Journal section - just don't mention lights! :P

fwiw - my first run was on a crappy blurple with blinking diodes. I'm drying as I type, so it worked.

Upgraded my lights a bit - but still on a TIGHT budget (teenagers are HUNGRY animals!), so they're still "crap" lights in most people's eyes here. I don't care - opinions haven't affected my enjoyment of this hobby.

I'll take growing seriously when I start paying the rent with it - till then, my garden is where I go to relax.
I had to remember this attitude with surfing a few years back - if I'm not getting paid, relax. (apparently I can be a bit competitive...)
Or, as another grower I know says, "Take it easy man, it's just weed!"

To each his/her own! bongsmilie

See what I mean? You can't even have a normal discussion. Your mind is made up and nobody will convince you otherwise. At least I, and others who run LED, are open to other means of providing light to our plants. I've been personally toying with the idea of running HPS in the winter, to keep the tent warmer, because I struggle to keep it warm enough for LED to get the best results in the winter.

“normal discussion”? I’m the one getting attacked for giving my opinion because it doesn’t coincide with the LED crowd. What most everyone on this site doesn’t understand is that lighting has a smaller impact on your grow than other things like control of your environment and micro climate. You can keep attacking me I don’t care it just makes me laugh. I’ve been away from this forum for about two years and nothing has changed. Anytime you go give someone advice of your reply doesn’t involve LED lighting some asshole comes out to attack you as what has happened here in this thread. If you really wanted to have a normal conversation you wouldn’t be so condescending and you would actually do some research and look at my logs from the past. I’m not anti anything but running LED is not the end all be all. And it’s not always the right solution for every grow.

so keep your passive aggressive bullshit to yourself.

Gentlemen,

The gentlest thing I can think of to say is

- stop shitting on other's threads -

Start your own thread and bash away - but go somewhere else. This thread has 2 or three posts with info, and 2 pages of bickering.

Nobody said it was. All anyone here did was object to your opinion that LED is still garbage when compared to HPS. If you think I'm being passive aggressive then I honestly don't know what to say to that.

Looking forward to any journals you make. Im also a few years out of date so am playing catchup on light info etc. I have a few Cree old 3070s (I believe thats what they are they've been boxed for 3ish years) that Im fixing to bust out for my first grow. But personally have nothing against HPS etc. I think LED's are awesome but the good ones are expensive as fuck to start up with for sure regardless of the long term payoff being positive or not compared to HPS. Ill probably end up with a few HPS in my setup as well just due to cost constraints so am watching the thread despite the needless bickering. If I had my way LED all the way provided they work but $$ constraints make that not possible or ideal especially for someone doing a startup grow cycle. GL to all involved here. Time to go lay some conduit line for my fans and A/C.

How to grow with LED: Use 30-60% more magnesium. An extra gram of Epsom in a gallon of nutes.

Mdf is gonna be heavy and offgassing formaldehyde. I'd build a wood frame and panel it.

Here's the LED vs HPS thread:

You are both well known, well respected members; and (I assume) adults.

IMHO - Your petty personal differences are not reflecting well on yourselves, or this forum; as you have completely hijacked a new member's thread.

can you post some photos is this a physical room thats already built? or are you planning on building a box of some sort. id recommend against mdf (medium density fibre board) for one thing if that ever gets wet even the slightest it will grow mold on the surface not a good choice for covering walls. i would recommend anything over that. i'd say use the mold resistant drywall the type you see in bathrooms (green or blue board) or type x drywall. if drywall seems undesirable for whatever reason then just simple plywood with a coat of flat white paint would suffice. as for lights it sounds like you are on a tight budget single ended ballasts will likely be the cheapest option vs high quality led. you'll need a carbon filter and fan regardless for smell so maby an air cooled hood or a cool tube. best of luck

Sorry, man, but I’m not going to let someone make baseless claims in a new members thread without saying something. The OP asked if LED was feasible now, and some of us (not just myself and @Evil-Mobo ) argued the pros and cons. The argument was still on subject of the OP. If you don’t like it then feel free to put me on your ignore list. I never said anything out of line so I’m really not sure why you have such a problem with the discussion we had.
