Finally someone who understands coco and how to use it
EVERYONE growing in coco needs to read this whether they use the info or not.
This is the exact reason i keep saying it is not inert. Go send a sample of your "inert coco" to the lab and see just how inert it really is.....

Pop a plant in coco and feed it plain water. See how well it does since coco isn't inert. You're arguing over semantics again.

Jesus Christ.

Yes there are trace elements of minerals. It is still inert. Try growing anything in coco without feeding like you do soil for the first couple weeks and let me know how long it stays alive.

Guy doesn't even use coco but is the expert on it.

Coir is used to grow mushrooms specifically because it’s non nutritious which makes it resistant to contamination.

No wait. It isn't inert. So says this guy.
No it is not inert by any definition.

Explain to me how a medium loaded with minerals is inert ? explain to me how an "inert medium" can have such a high cec ?

I made myself clear as can be. I never once said it can grow by itself....plants need N and the other elements missing from coco.

I was open to debate this on a separate thread but 28 pussed out because he knew he was wrong but wont admit it.

I USE the all the extra K in the coco....i do not wash it out to try an make it inert. its not. You can wash it all you want and grow hydro if you want but its still not inert. It even has its own ph....get the fuck outta here with your "i done it before , i know im right"

You seem upset. Would you like a lollipop? A Snickers?

No , i would like you to quit giving advice you cannot back up. Quit trying to argue facts. Coco is a great medium for hydro guys and organic guys. Thats the facts. Its not even close to "inert" Thats the facts.

I use long fiber, chunky coco to replace perlite because perlite is inert. Nothing wrong with perlite , i just like the extra cec from coco. More moisture/nutrient holding capabilities.

I googled "is coco inert". It said it was. Could you have them update their info please.

"highly inert"
Technically, not fully inert.

But I still think pound sign when I see a 'hashtag." Lol

May I ask how both of you define inert when it comes to grow media?
I understand loosely to mean a media that contains no minerals and does not absorb any with watering. Like pebbles or perlite.
Coco clearly isn't that so I'm confused as why it is called inert or most likely i just don't understand what inert means.
It has many minerals from the go and holds onto them with watering.
I've also tested zero feed in coco and no pH adjust after veg stage and was surprised with healthy plants throughout. Granted they were not optimal as you'd expect with no nutrients but I still scratch my head on how no deficiencies showed up and didn't just give up and die.
That was with Canna, buffered and washed before potting so as clean as one would hope.

You didn't grow healthy plants with no nutrients and no pHing in coco through veg. Just didn't happen.

I get your sceptism. If someone told me the same, I'd smile and move on but I shit you not.
To give a better picture, it was a seedling I didn't like the look of, took it out around 3 weeks and potted upto 16L fabric, sat by the window and introduced to outside for few days and then slung it out for good.
For a couple weeks it had the odd feed of dirty runoff water from main garden. Still in veg it was pretty much left with only rainwater for the next couple months outside, no feed and obviously no ph control. It dried several days many times and do recall watering with tap when it stayed dry for long but that was max 150ppm of random shit and probably did that twice during whole of flower.
The plant remained healthy, without disease, pest and no major deficiency.
I know now the genetics of it were amazing to even see its life out with such harsh treatment and I shouldn't of cut it out but we live and learn or we can just deny it all happened and live in our own ignorance.
I'm just trying to learn, like I said, maybe I misunderstand inert. You don't say what it means to you for any clarity.
