CBD for pets

I have a 15 year old Chiweenie with seizures and I and a 15 year old rescue Chihuahua I got about a year ago. She's has some joint issues. She's started limping and favoring one back leg. I know she's got some problems like hip dysplasia. I'm not going to spend thousands on an operation for a dog this old. I already spent about $1000 on her teeth which were rotten. And then almost that same amount with regular vet bills and shots. The senior panel costs about $200 and she's already had 2. My dogs get better medical treatment than I do. But I'm not spending 5K on a hip replacement for a dog this old. I'm putting her on a diet to lose weight, adding some supplements that will help her joints, and giving CBD a try.

I think one of the reasons she's having issues is because she sleeps on the bed and has to climb up and jump down. I have a 3 tier setup but she jumps down not realizing she's hurting herself. If I move the stuff the dogs pace around for hours until I let them get up because they're so used to sleeping on the bed. When these ones go to doggy heaven and I get some more I'm going to make sure that they don't get used to getting up on the bed to sleep.
My dogs have better medical insurance than I do. They all have Trupanion. It's about 100/dog/mo. For as much as I bitch it saved Pearl. She had a rare neurological disorder, idiopathic meningoencephalitis and I spent about 11,000 just for all the diagnostics. They fully reimbursed 90% and all her pharmacy bills from the compounding pharmacy.

They were amazing quick for reimbursement too. They paid me prior to the credit card bill coming in!

She's fine now and I continue her on her CBD. I started giving the two seniors some as well and I think they move better and all mine sleep on the bed LOL during the summer here it's a bit 'warm'

I wish you the very best with this.

I use this: https://www.extractlabs.com/product/bulk-cbd-isolate/
I mix 5 grams into 473 ml = 10.5 mg/ml
I give my girl who weighs roughly 10lb .5cc (5.25 mg) twice a day to control her seizures. I was able to wean her off Keppra and Prednisone at this dosage.

She weighs roughly 4.5 kg and I'm giving her just over 1 mg/kg twice a day (every 12 hours) for a total of 2mg/kg/24 hours. This stopped her seizures and allowed me to wean her off prednisone. The Keppra was easy the prednisone was a very long slow taper.

Doses for dogs are between 1 to 3 mg/kg. If you need anything else just holler.
I just bought some of that. What are you mixing it with?

My primary goal is to make my dogs feel better so they have a better quality of life. Maybe CBD can help improve their lives. I don't know. I do think it's worth trying. These are old dogs so I'm going to be very cautious and start out with very low dosage and work up to the recommended based on weight over the course of a couple weeks at least. I'm not going to just start giving them full doses. I'm confident that if introduced properly there will not be any adverse reactions from the CBD.

Anyone have any experience with these products? My dog has seizures and is getting older, I thought maybe there would be some combined benefits. Any help is appreciated.
My parents old weenie dog has seizures, the vet gave cbd oil and told dad to put two drops on his tongue when he seizes. Dad says it works wonders and he snaps out of it quickly!

When I was a teenager my friend growing up had this old lab with cancer, and cataracts, bad hips, rough. And when we would smoke the dog would always come beg for a blow in the snout and happily trot off to nap after getting high. I always thought that was the funniest thing to see.

Sadly seizures damage the brain, besides being frightening. Might your dad consider giving him a daily dose of CBD as a preventative?

Welcome to RIU.

my cat has hyperthyroidism. she gets a grain of rice size solventless decarboxylated cannabis flower extract twice a day.
she's been dosing now for over a year and she still hates it.
i'm not a fan of cbd, i think it's suppose to be used like salt on a steak, the thc being the steak, not dumping the salt in ur mouth.
i've yet to meet a human, including myself, that likes taking extract orally, but it will save ur life and ur dogs and cat's lives when they get cancer.
they knew what they were doing a hundred years ago before the rockefellers and the like took over.
told the fda at the beginning of covid. they know it will stop the cytokine storm.
google it.
and btw thc is fine for dogs and cats, cbd is trash, just for entourage effects.
google epidiolex.

I went with the Extra Virgin and used 2.5 g in 8 0z of oil. I just halved the recipe. I wanted half the CBD for myself. :D The dogs get the rest. Hoping it makes a difference with their issues. Regardless, I'm pretty confident that nothing bad will happen from giving them small doses of CBD so it's can only help.
Mine have been on therapeutic doses for years with no issues and my dog's neurologist is aware and pleased with her outcome (off the Keppra and Mycophenolate) he really didn't think she'd make it. But the CBD worked!

Thank you for updating me. I've wondered.

Morning obvious pet lovers!!

Our beloved American staffy most likely has cancer, we’re just waiting for the results from the vet.
Would a homemade canna butter diluted with coconut oil or something similar be ok or far too strong?
I definitely don’t want him knocked out all day, more just something to take the edge off.

I can get hold of shatter and oil so could buy it, but would much prefer to make him some as I have more than I need tucked away.
Thanks in advance

I was going to try this recipe with oil from a friend and dilute it with more coconut oil.

would love any suggestions on better recipes and dosage.
I’m in Australia so the stuff available online is probably more snake oil the oil oil.

Thanks again

Hey mate,
Just wondering how effective you found this to be?
Cheers.

Oh well mate at least you gave it a shot, I’ll have a go myself in the hopes of something beneficial happening.
My dogs were old neglected rescue dogs in poor health. I did what I could for them and tried to make their last days as good as I could. Just because the CBD was ineffective with them doesn't mean it won't have benefits for other dogs.

Good luck. I hope you see good results.
