so i am wondering if i were to buy an android phone that was unlocked but not under any service from a company. would i be able to use the app store and still download and play the games and use the web browser with wifi? im not worried about using it for phone calls or texting or anything like that.

im just looking for a cheaper alternative to an ipod touch pretty much lol

You can get cheap cheap android tablets... Under 100 dollars... Those would do the trick. Otherwise, yeah, you can use most android devices as a phone or as a "mini-tablet." For a phone that'll play most up-to-date games and apps, you'll spend a bit more than you would for a less expensive tablet.

Why don't you just buy a Nexus 7 or something, like minne said they aren't much at all. But to answer your question yes it would work but unlocked phones usually run more especially without a contract. I mean unless of course you know how to unlock and mod them :D

+1 on the Nexus 7. Want to get one of those myself...I could see using one of those and ditching the smartphone with its costly data plan.

Edit: check this out, maybe what you're looking for. http://www.google.com/nexus/4/

Androids are kinda clunky and confusing IMO. I'm sure you can use it without any cell service though as long as you have it connected to wifi. I love Apple because I'm a pro craigslister and can score them for cheap. (2am on a weeknight when someone needs bail money for their friend :D)

puretalkusa.com fuck the big ripoff cell providers. Thye use ALL cell towers so you always have the best coverage. no contracts. I have 4 lines with 600 shared minutes, $25/mo. If I need more minutes I go to the website and buy them. I can also control how many minutes go to each phone line. Set it up so if you go over it automatically charges $10 for another block of minutes. I went from $300/mo ($3,600/yr) with AT&T to about $300/yr. I have been with them for over a year and love them. No data, but you can use your wifi if you have it. I prefer no GPS/smart phone track and trace shit.

Definitely a personal preference thing, android vs iOS. I don't find Android to be clunky, though some devices running it are clunky as hell, for me it's more intuitive than using an iPhone. And I'm not a Mac hater by an means, I have a Macbook pro that I absolutely love and would not trade for any windows machine.

I'd love to answer this but I can't TMI. DAMN. Suffice to say I have an iPhone X issued and it does a lot of things without me ;) minne gets it I'm sure LOL

My mom has i-everything: pod, pad, phone...she loves it all. At 53 she's not as technically adept as I am, which is not to imply I'm a technical marvel simply that it comes easier for me, but it works for her and she's happy with it, I think Android gives me more flexibility. No point really to this except to illustrate how the different systems appeal to different people...they're all good, choose your flavor.
