LOL, yea man, a 1000 watt HPS seams a bit over kill for your first grow. Get a bunch of 27 watt CFL's that have blue spectrum in em. They will say daylight on them most likely.

can't argue with the mrs... well you can I guess but I know where it will get you. Bag the idea about the standard fluro's and stick with the CFL or T5 HO. It will take you more than a dozen of those regular fluro's to equal the luminen output of a few CFL or T5. Whichever way you go remember there is no such thing as too much light.

i say build a simple box out of lumber , put some crappy little doors on it and mylar the entire thing, and what do you mean by heat problems specificaly( I find that a desc fan in the grow room that turns of with the lights will keep lights on constant, while for night night time i have a small space heater that only turns on when it gets down to 65 so i leave it on all day.

Well the T5s would be nice.Me I hate cfls with a passion as they heat up, cost too much for what they put out and the buds and yield suck. I am a fan of standard T8 4 foot florescent lights as they are cheaper then cfls, no heat at all can touch the plants for days no issues, have much better light coverage and penetration then cfls and you dont have to keep moving them like with cfls a few times a day.No to mention no cheap home made reflectors and a ton of fire hazard y splitters and 50 cords.A simple 4 tub T8 commercial fixture and a cheap orange extension cord will give you a great start and veg system for under $50 bulbs included. Will use only 128 watts and grows great much better then cfls which you then need blue for veg and then red for flower so you spent hundreds on bulbs cords slpitters and shit thats a pain. Then for flower just toss the 1000 watter over them.Take the svaed money on the T8 lights buy a cool tube for your 1000 watter and your gravy..Just for fun heres some pics of a simple $50 worth of T8 at work some on soil some on aero about 28 plants under each doing well...T8 works great for me replaced a bunch of my 400 and 1000 watt mh lights now

I had the same dilema w/my 400w MH in a small space.Iwent w/the T-5s.They were a little pricey but worth it in my veiw,Before switching to t-5s i tried cfls too,and found out that they produce more heat then i was expecting and if touching your leaves the cfl will burn them.Either go w/t-8s (Cheap) or t-5s (not cheap). Good luck
