In your case I would get something more capable that Cree CXB3590 for what you're doing. You could get your 1000W DE that is actually burning 1250W or so down to 750W-800W with COBs. I would go for the higher power Citizen chips that can handle up to 500W and run them at about 150W with decent cooling. They arent the most efficient COBs on the market but they put out some serious ammount of light and can penetrate just as god if not better than your HPS while they still run at least 10% cooler.
Expect less nutrient uptake, water demand and more vigorous growth with a higher demand of magnesium. Could throw you off the track and get you panicking and hating without at least thinking of that.
If you can uae a screwdriver and stick a wire in a connector you could also do it at a fraction of the price of a finished product. Or maybe have someone with the simple skills help you out on the build against the payment.

He must be choosing the non DIY route on purpose, theres no doubt he can build whatever light he wanted, the dude is insanely smart , hes shown pics of the controllers/timers hes built. Lights wouldnt be an issue. Unless he just wants plug and play and to not mess with DIY. I think he bought his other cob light from @CobKits , that may have been a diy kit? i dont remember.

I am considering a DIY option and I am waiting on @CobKits to respond to an inquiry. I have plenty of time so I am definitely considering all options. The Timber option does sound pretty good though with the pricing I was given by @RainDan so I will wait and see if the savings are worth building all those frames. If I can save a grand it might just be worth it. Remember that I am dealing with some pretty extreme levels of back pain at times (like now) and it can be very difficult to do simple things like stand up. When I am feeling good I can get stuff done but that is rare and seems to becoming more scarce. I do however appreciate the input on various cobs. My current cob light that has managed to swing me over was built from cobkits parts but I honestly don't remember what cobs were used because my email deletes old stuff.

Ya i guess i forgot the back issues , that could def take the fun out of diy`ing all those frames/fixtures.
Ive loved those timbers since first time i seen them, part of me wonders if i shouldnt have just went with a couple fattys over my diy builds lol
So are you also considering restructuring the room and growing a little differently? or growing the same 5x5x5 trellised trees? you hoping to just switch out light for light hps/cob?

Renfro, the best suggestion I can make would be to try and compare the PPF output of each fixture. If you can create the same total PPF output from the Timbers as the DE's then you should get the same results. The benefit of using current tech diodes is using less wattage to get the same photon outputs as the HID.

It's a fact you cant deny. Everyone quotes HPS watts of the bulb but wants to know how much those leds are pulling from the wall. They never ask themselves what their lights are pulling from the wall while they're questioning the other lights

What light meter do you suggest? Everytime I look at them I get tired of wading through them and most are in LUX. People say that you need different meters for LED and HPS, so I just gave up lol. I do know that @RainDan says the Redwood was designed as a true 1kW DE replacement.
I would jump on those Fatty's but they are a fortune to ship since they are so big, would be nice if I could so a little assembly and not have them ship so costly.

Wow Renfro, you are an inspiration, you're back pain is probably the equivalent abouts as my schizophrenia, the disease leaves me crippled, I am extremely lathargic, both lazy and unconscerned, I sit and lay down all day, I get up to cook, clean or get a drink, or grow pot of course. I guess it's all relative, a degree on a spectrum, your back pain allows you to grow monster crops, my schizophrenia allows me to grow 2 oz a week, but alot of it is what you know, your experience makes things easier for you to grow bigger crops.

My last larger bloom room i had a desk chair in there. That’s how I got around. My back is smoked too. 20yrs of drywall/lath/metalstud framing.
Right now I’m trying to get the new shop foundation ready for the second pour and also get the irrigation together for the outdoor plants. My back is on fire! Wish there was a chair/stool for this work lol. The best i can come up with is a 5gal bucket when i can.

I switched from hps to cob a couple years ago. Was disappointed. Two bad runs in a row fucked my confidence up and i went back to hps to regain it. After taking some time off and building a new space for hydro, i went back to the cobs. The first run was not bad considering i know nothing about hydro. This second run was way better. I now know how bad i fucked up with the cobs on the first two runs. Gotta have the room temp right for them and balance the EC to that.
Might be less of learning curve by mixing them with hps....??? I dunno...
If you have the space i would suggest running cob alone in a test area to see what they do on their own, then mix em.
Anyway, im sold on cob now. If you dial them in you can get the same yields as hps or better. Although, dunno if that holds true for de. I never tried those...

Well considering I have the HPS side lighting for heat and I have a run in my tent under my belt that was very good I think I am able to handle the change to LED.

you asked me via email what meter to measure power consumption they are pulling from wall, if you are wired 120V these are cheap and easy

if you want to measure light itself these are accurate enough for your purpose (evening out a garden and comparing intensity with other LEDs of similar spectra. note that 700 umol measured on a 6500k LED spectrum isnt exactly the same as 700 umol measured on a 3000k LED spectrum or HPS or MH etc.
but for your purposes its a good affordable option and performs in same ballpark as the Li-Cors that start over $500
